The complications of relationships are the main focus of this episode.

Warning: Spoilers
Love is a complicated matter. Be it platonic love for a person you would do anything for; a love with gives birth to sexual feelings; or a love which exists but is complicated for, despite what romantics may say, two people can never become one. Yes, they can share life, but the question becomes what are they willing to sacrifice for this, and are the sacrifices worth it?

Within "The Ambush" most of the characters are forced to confront something which, for the most part, they aren't really comfortable with. For Bay, she has to confront that maybe what Mary Beth said about Tank was true; Daphne has to confront the complexity of possibly dating Campbell; Toby has to deal with Nikki's return, and confront the issues in their relationship; and then you have Regina who has to deal with the fact her mother was right. Altogether, no one seems really ready with what pops up in the episode, and everyone seems to be working through their problems, though some are handling things better than others.

Topic 1: Boy Trouble (Bay & Daphne)

In what I thought was a rather cute display, as both girls had boy troubles, they spoke to their birth mothers about it. Albeit, the mother's had to push their girls to talk, but it is some progress right? Especially for Bay and Regina's relationship.

Anyway, starting with Bay, with her relationship with Tank already rocky, then comes the issue of his hormones getting involved. You see, he is ready to have sex with Bay, but she isn't ready. So, while he hem and haws about accepting her decisions, he notes things like "Are you a virgin?" "I forget you are in High School" and while he makes a verbal save after these comments, with what maybe a genuine apology, I can't help but feel like the writing is on the wall for Tank. For, between Ty coming back or Emmett getting back in the race, Tank may have proved that Bay doesn't just like the model-esque type, but while Tank is a gentle giant, he has the type of issues Bay really doesn't need right now in a relationship. But, with this apology it seems they are still together.

Leading us to talk about Daphne who seemingly is going to choose Campbell. For, while Jorge, she notes, is a beautiful specimen, something about Campbell's eyes just make her completely melt. And though I won't read into that, you can though. Overall though, it seems Jorge maybe mobile, but he doesn't get her heart racing like Campbell does. So, on what looks like a date, we get an almost flip in what we usually experience when it comes to this show. For, rather than Daphne being the one who has to deal with a society not built to accommodate her, it is Campbell this time. Be it streets without ramps for him to get on the sidewalk; bars which won't let him in; or the issue of people getting angry on his behalf; the show flips the script on who is the privileged one in Daphne's love life, but with this comes the idea that things can't be perfect. For example, we have seen Daphne deal with the guys she like saying inappropriate, or not politically correct things about her deafness before, and Daphne does this with Campbell in regards to his non-cooperative legs. And both come to an understanding that things maybe awkward at first, yeah, but their feelings for one another will more than compensate for the occasional awkward, or even frustrating, moment.

Topic 2: Sacrifices to Make (Regina & Toby)

Now, while Daphne and Bay's frustrations come from love interest, Regina's comes from Wes. As we know, Wes is very much about business first beyond anything else, and can be a bit of an emotional and manipulative SOB. This episode portrays him as nothing different. You see, in this episode Regina gets a crash course in Business 101, starting with her inadvertently being a Trojan horse sent in to slaughter who comes in with a contract, and impending check, so Wes can buyout the various properties, undervalued, and gentrify. And, from what it seems, Adrianna was right about Regina being bought simply for being Latina, with her being a member of the community being a bonus.

However, with a brand new car and getting a lot of work done, she seems a bit enchanted. Wes wakes her up though as she has to sacrifice seeing Daphne's field hockey game, which leads to big things for Sheree, and then upon talking with John, she realizes the mistake she made. She presented a buyout to an old friend, one she at least knew since the business started 20+ years ago, and it was a rip-off. Making me wonder how long she maybe in business with Wes since she has 3 more deals to do for him, and already screwed over one old friend.

Leaving us with Toby. Nikki has come back and though she isn't around to see the fruit of Toby's labor, including maybe getting Sheree a college scholarship, she is there to talk about the future. Unfortunately though, this future isn't as much of a discussion as an ultimatum. The church Nikki works for in Peru has offered her a position in Africa and she would like Toby to come. Issue is, that doesn't seem like an option for Toby and though he has dealt with her being gone for as long as she has, he can't fathom a long distance relationship, much less marriage, working when the two people aren't even on the same continent. After all, considering how many times they imply the two have sex in the episode, I don't think Toby's little friend could deal. So, we are left wondering what their future maybe? That is if they have one.
