A strong start
CubsandCulture23 September 2020
Demon!Dean is a really fun riff that this season played around with and the overall Mark of Cain story ends up being one of the best plotlines in the later years. The budding bromance between Crowley and Dean needed a slightly lighter touch in the details but this was a fun episode that gets the season off to a good start.

Oh, I just love DeamonDean
katja-032982 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
DeamonDean is just NOT so what I expected he would be! Which makes it so much more fun to watch. I wish human Dean would be more like this... hoping he will keep some of this playfulness when he becomes human again. This connects excellently to Crowley's character and why he has been attracted to Dean at all. Though DeamonDean might not quite be what he expected...

While Dean seems to have got rid of all that "my guilt and your guilt business" Sam's role is that of the worried brother. Not a very thankful task and the story lacks depth here.

I think it's a pity that nothing seems to refer to the earlier episodes when Dean was in the role of the worried brother and Sam said that he does not forgive him for bringing him back to life by all means - that he even cannot understand his motives. They never seem to remember or be able to say "I'm sorry" or "Now I know what it must have been for you to go through".

Yeah, I know: men don't talk that much about feelings - but still they learn. Dear writers, please think about that for future episodes.

Meh

Warning: Spoilers
Well Sam and Cas' stories were lame. Dean and Crowley's however were awesome. Dean singing karaoke hammered? Amazing. Foosball game intensity? Great. Bromance? I can dig it. I hope Dean is the big bad guy of this season, but I know there is no way his demondom will last that long. I was hoping this episode would be about Sam being a crazy person and hardly mention Dean at all. The talk with the gas station cashier was awesome but odd at the same time. That guy was pretty good for just being in that one part. I really hope Cas gets his stuff together because the coughing was irritating as heckfire in this one. Also I like the cover they had to do for Sam because of his wrestling debacle. The new guy hunting Dean is pretty alright, and I can't wait for him to catch him.

The darker side of Dean unveiled...
merldezoysa9 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
As usual Supernatural delivered it's fans a mind-blowing first episode in it's 10th Season run. The darker part of Dean which was a puzzle for almost 9 seasons was directly exposed in the Season 10's premiere. "Dean the demon" says it all by just starring at the CCTV while Sam Winchester watching it like a person who just got scared watching a demon. And for him it's not his brother anymore. Dean is a demon and Sam is a hunter and both of them are doing what their primal instinct is asking them to do... This time it's Dean who's in the dark side is to be saved by Sam Winchester and let's see how far he's ready to go to save his brother even though Dean seems to care less about Sam.

good start but "deanmom" lacking
lathamv9 October 2014
"Black" was a good intro to the season. They gave the audience some previews of what story lines will be expanded upon during the season. although the episode may have touched the beginning of too many ideas which made the episode a little convoluted (one star lost).

The only other issue was "Deanmon" wasn't the demon I expected. I understand hes wanting to take a vacation from being humanity's savior but nothing about him said "demon" to me... he was just Dean on a bender. Another star lost for not living up to the expectations of "DEANMON". If they want us to believe Dean is really a demon, we have to see that in him. Granted, the writers have a whole season to expand the idea but a sample of that part of him would have made this episode an exceptional premier.

Good

The only problem I had with the episode was the Castiel storyline. It was dull and didn't add to the plot. It also made the episode lag and it just needed to be removed. Also, I don't care about Hannah. I find her character annoying and disposable.

Still a Long Way to Go
galet099 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
It seems like a long way to go before the brothers are right with one another again. Now Dean is a demon or DEANMON as the producers have announced in the previews. He is vicious and utterly cold. In the end his face was set in stone and he didn't seem to care what happened one whit to his brother Sam. Although I found the episode interesting and a good one, I am praying that Castiel will get his grace back soon before he dies. Basically he is little more than a normal human, that's why he was sleeping and has the cough etc. He needs his power back.

It was fun seeing the charismatic Mark Sheppard again as Crowley though. He did a great job as usual.

I was a little let down though by this first episode of S10 and wished it had been a little more impactful and also wished there had been a couple characters from the past, instead of just Sam, Dean and Castiel. I guess you could count Hannah as well, but I had hoped to see maybe Garth or Gabriel or some of the other interesting regular characters.

All in all I enjoyed it though and am looking forward to episode 2.

Dean being a douche, Sam, Boring angels
shwetafabm1 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There are 4 things happening in this ep Cas is dying, not sure why, he didn't before, but something about grace burning him was said to him by Metatron i think so it does fit. The dilemma here is getting angels back. I think that's a solid dilemma, just not worth the runtime, i simply don't care much for it, the angels are boring, do we have to do the clueless thing with Anna again. Sam's part was the best, the kid at the store was good, the guy after him is fine. Demon Dean... I'm not disappointed per se because storywise it makes sense but its a bit hard to piece, so Dean woke up a demon, felt what? I feel that's what was missing. It's hard to know what this guy is feeling and what he wants. That's the point i think but i wanted some clarity. He's confused himself so again it fits the story imo. This is Dean maybe he is holding onto not becoming a complete monster even if he doesn't care and gets off on toying and killing and torturing people. Then there is also the real world issue, you can only take the character to a certain extent, the worse they have pushed a character is actually Castiel in S6 and S7 and it was pretty bad but Cass while a big part of the show is not the center of it like Dean, lets be real this has been the Dean Winchester show for a while, unfairly at times even, he gets most dialogue, most interactions and relationships with other characters. They will not want to taint this character and they will not be brave enough to make him the big bad. I know it would be great to see but then that's the end of the show probably, it did bounce back Cass but its not a risk they were willing to make probably. Also absolutely makes no sense that Abaddon loyalists are going after him, they must know something about him having the mark or so though tbf it can be assumed they don't know. Crowley, his obsession was weird from the beginning, the sam is just jealous i have his brother as my bestie is also weird to me.

Not Good Enough
Dariush728 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This premiere failed to put up to the hype that the S9 finale created, no particular Arc except Dean and Cas has been introduced.....Dean is a demon and he shows that he doesn't care about anything, however still he doesn't express the viciousness that a typical demon does....its just a Dean that doesn't care about anything or anyone (except a one night stand lover), not a Dean with a twisted soul that enjoys killing...i think in many ways he is even calmer than the Human Dean with Mark Of Cain.....Castiel's story began strange with him in a bed and Hanna showing up behind his doorsteps...there are a couple of issues here, 1) haven't angels return to heaven?...so they should be healed because of their presence in heaven, then why Hanna is still walking, and riding along in a car with Cas?.....2)Cas's fading grace is killing him, however he is still an angel and doesn't need and Cannot sleep (as he said previously about missing being a human)....so how come he was sleeping?...this was a pretty weak premiere, maybe weakest of the whole show.......it was anti Climatic and "not" suspenseful...but it was a bit funny..I give it that....

So many story lines, none of which make sense, all rushed
miss-shopper7 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Am I watching the whole season in one episode because there's Dean and Crowley's story, then there's Sam's, then there's Cas, then there's Cas and Hazel's, then there's Crowely and Sam, then there's Dean and this chick, Sam and Dean, Cas and heaven, this guy with the kill switch, and god knows who else they'll fit next week. And by the way, the plot holes with Castiel's story could cause an oil spill.

Wanted suspense about Sam finding out about his brother? Nope, gonna rush it. Wanted Deanmon to either still be himself or like a real demon? Ehh you get this shitty mix of the two. Wanted good editing? Lol here's switching between one close up to the next cutting way too early.

Where's the suspense? I miss when things played out instead of just lumped in. Two seasons ago this was my favorite show. Last season and already this episode is killing it for me. It's really disappointing.

really didn't deliver for me
cathystead9 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Confused time gap opening, I felt I had missed the first 10 minutes of show. Gratuitous torture and violence. silly sex scene rushed. dialog clunky. A few good Crowley lines as usual.

Deanmon is not what I expected. Instead of evil scary demon as hyped, we got a sex up Frat boy on Spring Break.

Overall slow moving and very uneven.

Hannah character portrayed well by actress Erica Hall, however character POV is confused.

Over the top acting by Jared. Suffered most from clunky dialog. back story of Cole character missing..

No wow factor
