These days Jane Campion – Palme d’Or and Oscar-winning film director – is celebrated for a vein of heartfelt cinema that is aching and quirky, rather than gushing. She’s also an intelligent and determined female pioneer who has had to struggle for her present standing in a male-dominated industry.
The Sydney Film Festival this week is showcasing and contextualizing her body of work. Its screening program includes all nine of her feature works, from “Two Friends” to “The Power of the Dog,” and a selection of her short films.
“For our 70th edition, we wanted to present a retrospective commensurate with the milestone, reflecting the audacious and boundary pushing filmmaking synonymous with our festival and region. There was no one more appropriate than Jane Campion,” said Sff director Nashen Moodley in notes ahead of the event.

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

Gemma Chan and Dominic Cooper have been quietly dating since 2018 and have rarely ever commented on their romance - until now. In a July interview with Harper's Bazaar UK, Chan opened up about speaking out against anti-Asian hate crimes during the pandemic, and how Cooper was her support system.
"I think I'm so fortunate to be in a relationship where we can talk about anything," she said. "Dom was very understanding and empathetic. I was quite open about how I was feeling during that time, and he was just incredibly supportive. I definitely didn't feel I had to shoulder everything on my own. I'm really, really lucky."
Chan and Cooper were recently spotted out together in the UK, sitting in the stands for day 10 of Wimbledon. The pair have always been private about their relationship, but photos from the event show them seeming very much in love.

Vertical Entertainment has signed a deal with Mister Smith Entertainment for North American distribution rights to romantic comedy “The Hating Game,” which stars “Pretty Little Liars” actor Lucy Hale and Austin Stowell, who also appeared with her in “Fantasy Island.” Vertical is planning to give it a theatrical release later this year.
“The Hating Game,” which is based on the hit novel by Sally Thorne, tells the story of kind-hearted Lucy Hutton (Hale) and her cold, efficient nemesis Joshua Templeton (Stowell). Resolving to achieve professional success without compromising her ethics, Lucy embarks on a ruthless game of one-upmanship against Josh, a rivalry that is impossibly complicated by her growing attraction to him.
Peter Hutchings (“Then Came You”) directed Christina Mengert’s adaptation of the book.

It’s no great leap forward in filmmaking, but the big-budget disaster movie “Skyfire” does prove that China is now capable of producing its own brand of utterly preposterous and enjoyably trashy popcorn entertainment for a global audience. This thrill-packed tale about an angry volcano wreaking havoc on thinly written characters at a luxury island resort plays like a souped-up and much better remake of Irwin Allen’s 1980 turkey “When Time Ran Out.” Starring a predominantly Chinese cast and energetically directed by British action specialist Simon West, “Skyfire” did Ok without setting the Chinese box-office alight in December 2019 release. It should be a hot number with action fans when launched on VOD in North America by Screen Media on Jan. 12.
While several recent Chinese productions including “The Wandering Earth,” “The Captain” and “The Bravest” have depicted large-scale calamities, none have embraced the tried-and-true disaster movie format with the unashamed reverence and gusto of “Skyfire.

You’ve read about the best movies of 2018 — IndieWire’s staff list is topped by “Roma,” followed by “First Reformed,” “The Favourite,” “Cold War,” and “Shoplifters” — but what about the worst? As they do every year, the fine folks at Metacritic have crunched the numbers and come out with a list of the most poorly received films to come out in the last 12 months.
Dinesh D’Souza’s “Death of a Nation” has the dubious distinction of coming in at #1, but it isn’t just the worst film of 2018 — it’s the worst film in the site’s history: “Out of the 11,819 films for which we have Metascores,” the list reads, “‘Nation’ ranks as #11,819.”
The full list:
“Death of a Nation” (Metascore: 1) “London Fields” (Metascore: 16) “The Vanishing of Sidney Hall” (Metascore: 18) “Reprisal” (Metascore: 19) “Life Itself” (Metascore: 21) “The Clapper” (Metascore: 21) “211” (Metascore: 21) “Dark Crimes” (Metascore: 21) “Gotti” (Metascore: 24) “Stratton” (Metascore: 26) “Hell Fest” (Metascore:...

"So what's the deal with Stratton? What's he like?" Momentum Pictures has debuted an official Us trailer for the British action movie titled Stratton, starring Dominic Cooper as a British Special Boat Service commando named Stratton who tracks down an international terrorist cell. From the director of Con Air and The Mechanic, this movie is also known as Stratton: First Into Action and opened in the UK back in September. The name "First Into Action" comes directly from the book that this is based on, a "Dramatic Personal Account of Life in the Sbs." The film's full cast includes Connie Nielsen, Tom Felton, Tyler Hoechlin, Gemma Chan, Thomas Kretschmann, Derek Jacobi, and Austin Stowell. It seems like Momentum is dumping this in January, and it doesn't look like it's really that good, mostly heavy on action. Here's the new official Us trailer (+ old UK poster) for Simon West's Stratton,...

Dominic Cooper picked up a trick or two from his time on Agent Carter, it seems. Now that his tenure on the Marvel spy series is complete, it is Cooper's turn to play a secret agent in the upcoming action thriller, Stratton, and Et has the first trailer.
From this first look, it's clear Stratton has everything you'd want out of a flick about MI6: the threat of a biological weapon with millions of lives at stake, an accented villain vowing to get his revenge and a spy who has no respect for authority or the chain of command. To which Cooper's Stratton states, "I'm prepared to accept any penalties for violating protocol."

Derek Jacobi’s performance is among the lowlights of this embarrassing Bond-on-a-boat affair
Less an action movie, more a direct breach of the Geneva conventions, Stratton is a wannabe Bond knock-off with water on the brain. Dominic Cooper stars as John Stratton, member of an elite band of commandos called the Special Boat Service. Their skills involve causing international incidents, exchanging casual banter while wearing wetsuits and holding their breath for a really long time.
The acting is chiselled and stubbly – most of the characters look as if they are more interested in launching their own range of personal grooming products than in the weapon of mass uninterest that is the plot. Two performances stand out: Derek Jacobi is utterly bizarre as a salty sea dog who lives on a Thames barge and quotes limericks and Connie Nielsen is staggeringly bad as Stratton’s boss. She sounds like a drunk...

Stars: Dominic Cooper, Gemma Chan, Connie Nielsen, Tom Felton, Tyler Hoechlin, Derek Jacobi, Austin Stowell, Thomas Kretschmann | Written by Warren Davis II, Duncan Falconer | Directed by Simon West
Directed by Simon West (Con Air), this British spy thriller clearly fancies itself as the basis of a lucrative action franchise in the Bond or Bourne mould. Unfortunately, the action is decidedly sub-par and the central character is as dull as dishwater, which doesn’t bode well for its chances of future instalments.
Based on a series of novels by former Special Boat Service commando Duncan Falconer (who co-wrote the screenplay), Stratton centres on pint-sized Sbs commando John Stratton (Dominic Cooper), who’s tasked with capturing evil Russian agent Grigori Barovsky (Thomas Kretschmann), before he unleashes a deadly terror attack on central London. The mission has a personal edge for Stratton, as Barovsky is the man responsible for...

Dominic Cooper flexes his action hero muscles as a globe-trotting trouble-shooter in Stratton. Hired as last-minute replacement for Henry Cavill shortly before shooting began, the Preacher star does a serviceable job as the eponymous hotshot commando with the Special Boat Services, Britain’s equivalent to the U.S. Navy SEALs. But he is mostly firing blanks thanks to a creaky script and dim-witted plot. Screenwriter Duncan Falconer, himself a former Sbs officer, adapted this fast-paced Eurothriller from his own novels. Director Simon West aims for a kind of Jason Bourne or Mission: Impossible feel, but he falls short in budget, star power...

It says a lot about a film when its most memorable moment is an incorrect use of geography. The moment when a character is on a bus leaving Camden and is then suddenly in Piccadilly evoked the same noise from the audience of London-based critics that I imagine would have been emitted at the response to Thor’s ‘How do I get to Greenwich?’ question in The Dark World. It was a cacophony of snort-sigh-laugh that connoted that the audience had officially given up on the film. Even more unfortunately, that was also the film’s most entertaining moment, for Stratton is otherwise a pretty unremarkable caper: a by-the-numbers movie about a macho-maverick-man doing macho-maverick-man things.
Based on The Hostage - book number one of eight in the John Stratton series by Duncan Falconer – Stratton is about John Stratton (surprise!

Ian Fleming’s character James Bond was ostensibly a commander in the Royal Navy, but we rarely saw him get much action on any sea vessels aside from the odd shag after blowing up an island base. John Stratton, likewise, maintains a somewhat tenuous connection to boats, despite being a Special Boat Service operator in the British Secret Intelligence Service. At least so far as we can tell from this trailer. Maybe 90 percent of Simon West’s new spy thriller Stratton takes place on the deck of ships, and they just chose not to focus on that for this trailer. Fair enough.

Based on the Duncan Falconer book series, Stratton began life as a vehicle for Superman himself, Henry Cavill, before the Man of Steel bowed out of the project and Dominic Cooper took over. With his performance in AMC's Preacher getting a decent reception, the change up may not have been such a bad thing in the end. In the film, Cooper plays a Special British Boat Service commando tasked with tracking down a terrorist cell. Once packaged as a Henry Cavill vehicle before the current Man of Steel was forced to bow out due to scheduling conflicts, Simon West’s (The Mechanic) MI6 thriller Stratton is still barrelling down on its 2016 release date, only this time it is Dominic Cooper that takes up arms as the titular agent.
Thanks to AMC’s live-action Preacher series, Cooper’s stock is rising and rising fast, and this time he’s delving into the secretive world of espionage action and biochemical weapons. Loosely based on Duncan Falconer’s novel of the same name, Stratton reads like your typical flick of a one-man-army going up against the odds, pitting Cooper’s Special Boat Service operative – yes, that appears to be a real job title – against a band of unruly terrorists.
Rounding out the casting docket are Gemma Chan, Austin Stowell, Tyler Hoechlin, Tom Felton, Thomas Kretschmann, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen,...

After spending the last couple of months hearing Dominic Cooper do a pretty damn good Texas drawl on the AMC series “Preacher,” it’s a bit disorienting to hear him go back to his native British tongue. So it might take a moment of adjustment as you sit back to see the actor jump into action […]

Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Tyler Hoechlin!
The star of Richard Linklater’s “Everybody Wants Some!” has just been cast as Superman/Clark Kent on next season of The CW’s “Supergirl.”
Read More: Superman Is Coming to ‘Supergirl’ Season Two
Warner Bros. TV had previously announced that Superman would appear at the beginning of “Supergirl’s” second season, as the show moves from CBS to The CW. The plot hasn’t been revealed yet, other than Superman will be visiting his Krypton cousin Kara (Melissa Benoist) in National City.
Superman has already made appearances on “Supergirl,” but only as blurry glimpses.
“Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman,” said executive producer Andrew Kreisberg.

Hoechlin will next star in “Stratton.” His other credits include the TV series “Teen Wolf” and “7th Heaven,” as well as the films “Road to Perdition,” “Hall Pass” and “Solstice.”
The casting continues the DC Comics tradition of keeping actors playing the film and TV versions of its characters separate, as Henry Cavill currently plays Superman on the big screen. The announcement also puts to rest speculation that Tom Welling, who played young Clark Kent on “Smallville” for The WB (and later, The CW), might be up for the role.

It’s no secret things get kinky in Fifty Shades Darker, the sequel to last year’s (punishing) Bdsm romance, but it looks like they might also get more than a little hairy. According to TheWrap, Teen Wolf actor Tyler Hoechlin is coming aboard the Universal pic, taking on the supporting role of (no joke) Boyce Fox, who works with Anastasia Steele (star Dakota Johnson) at a publishing company.
Hoechlin, who plays Derek Hale on MTV’s Teen Wolf, is on the cusp of a Hollywood breakthrough, with roles in the spy actioner Stratton (which stars Dominic Cooper) and Richard Linklater’s college comedy Everybody Wants Some both in the can. Fifty Shades Darker will be his first bona fide blockbuster title – though his role, beefed up significantly from a heard-but-not-seen figure in the books, still seems somewhat fleeting.
Casting has been steadily taking place on the slightly delayed Fifty Shades of Grey follow-up,...

Action thriller stars Dominic Cooper, who was an 11th hour replacement for Henry Cavill.
Gfm Films has confirmed that shooting on action thriller Stratton, directed by Simon West (Con Air, The Expendables 2), has wrapped.
Filming commenced on July 15 in Brindisi, Italy before moving to Rome and onto various locations in and around London, UK.
Produced by Matthew Jenkins, Stratton is based on the series of books by ex-sbs (Special Boat Service) agent Duncan Falconer.
Gfm and West said they plan to continue their contractual relationship with Falconer in “creating a new action hero franchise”, working with the key creative and producing team on Stratton.
Dominic Cooper (Need For Speed, Dracula Untold) plays the lead role of Stratton, a determined and dedicated Sbs operative working alongside MI5 to prevent an international terrorist attack in London.

Exclusive: After enduring a heatwave in Italy, torrential rains in the UK and a near-miss with some deadly green algae in London, shooting wrapped last week on Dominic Cooper-starrer Stratton. The action thriller is helmed by Simon West and based on the series of novels by ex-sbs agent Duncan Falconer. The film originally had Henry Cavill starring and producing; he later exited and Cooper came on board what West says is a movie with franchise potential and the chance to…...

The European action-thriller Stratton has only just commenced shooting, and yet it’s become something of a talking point due to its last-minute casting dilemma. One week prior to the commencement of principal photography, Henry Cavill – aka the Man of Steel – dropped out of the project, leaving Gfm Films up that proverbial creek minus a paddle. Luckily, another superhero stalwart found a space in his schedule to take over the rugged leading man duties: Dominic Cooper.
Cooper seems an unlikely candidate for the role of action hero. Especially when compared to Cavill, whose buffed-out physique adheres to the Jason Bourne-style theatrics Stratton must endure. Described in the official synopsis as “a determined and dedicated Sbs operative”, the film finds him working with MI6 “to prevent a revenge attack in London,” therefore making the beefcake build somewhat of a necessity.
To celebrate the start of production, the first image from the movie has arrived,...

A week before shooting was to begin on the Simon West-directed Stratton, it's lead star and producer, Henry Cavill, left the project citing "creative differences." With production ready to go, a replacement had to be found on the fly, and that replacement was Dominic Cooper. Marvel fans may recognize him as Howard Stark, but as you can see in the first image from the film below,... Read More...

The first photo has been released of Dominic Cooper in the Simon West-directed "Stratton," the potential first of a franchise action feature based on Duncan Falconer's eight-book series about the titular member of Britain's elite Special Boat Service.
In the film, Stratton teams up with a Us Navy Seal (Austin Stowell) to battle an international terrorist. Falconer is an experienced former member of this special forces branch of the British intelligence network.
Gemma Chan, Tom Felton, Thomas Kretschmann, Derek Jacobi, Tyler Hoechlin, Connie Nielsen and Jake Fairbrother also star in the film which originally had Henry Cavill in the title role until he dropped out just before filming began. Cooper was quickly pulled in to replace him and shooting is underway in Italy now before shifting to London next month.
"Stratton" is due to open in 2016.

Move over Reacher, Bourne, Bauer and to a lesser extent Christmas, because Stratton has stormed in. Who needs first names when you're an armed-to-the-teeth special forces operative? Dominic Cooper, as this first still demonstrates, certainly doesn't. He's in name-taking mood as the film's Sbs trooper tackles a range of terror threats.Stratton sees Cooper's titular hardman teams up with a Us Navy Seal (Austin Stowell) to battle an international terrorist. He's the hero of an eight-book series by pseudonymous ex-military type Duncan Falconer - the man also behind the screenplay - and an experienced member of the elite Special Boat Service (like the Sas, only with extra canoeing) seconded to a cutting edge corner of the British intelligence network. The movie, which originally had Henry Cavill in the title role, has been shooting in Italy and gets underway in London next month. Co-starring with the lead are Gemma Chan, Tom Felton,...

Exclusive: Man Of Steel star quits production just days before shooting was set to begin.
Henry Cavill has pulled out of the leading role in Special Forces thriller Stratton, less than a week before shooting was set to begin on June 2.
Action director Simon West (Con Air, The Expendables 2) was due to start shooting in London and Rome from next week on the film, based on the first of a series of novels by Duncan Falconer.
Gfm Films is providing finance and worldwide sales and was selling the film at Marché du Film in Cannes last week.
But Gfm co-founder Guy Collins told ScreenDaily that it was now contacting distributors to inform them of the change.
“After securing many distribution deals ahead of the market, we had a really good Cannes and had closed more deals ahead of production next week,” said Collins.
