Warning: Spoilers
Season 4 of Shameless has been a surprising beast even given how consistently fresh the show has always been. While the plot threads weren't all necessarily the best we have seen from Shameless, the changes in character this season have struck me as the most significant so far.

First of all, Sheila has become quite the piece of work this season. Amongst all of the shameless personalities in the first 3 seasons, Sheila was always the least assholish (to the point of becoming a static, dull character) so having her develop into this manipulative, vindictive new member of the Gallagher family. I also loved the shift away from having Fiona be the main caregiver this season to becoming a lost, tormented felon. Shameless for a long time had developed into the Fiona and sometimes Frank show and now that she has taken a backseat, Deb and Ian and Lip and Carl have become three dimensional and more in charge of their own lives.

Sammy taking on the mantle of the devoted child of Frank is another welcome change. While she seemed at first to be another character with ulterior motives, she has been refreshingly genuine. The continued development and ultimate payoff of Mickey and Ian's relationship and how it clashes with Svetlana is probably the best singular thread of the season. The complex relationship between Ian and Amanda is a close second. The scene in the sorority house during the season finale has a surprisingly intimate moment that almost immediately has a monkey wrench thrown into it.

The musical chairs of characters characteristic of Shameless reached new heights in season 4 with 3 whole families shuffling in and out of the Gallagher household. It really demonstrates how cluttered the Gallaghers' lives have become. I am very much looking forward to what chaos will ensue next year.

By the way, saw that final credits scene coming a mile away. Also, that final (pre credits) scene between Frank and Carl is quite possibly my favorite Frank scene of the series.

Left me absolutely speechless

Warning: Spoilers
the American shameless has totally taken its own spin on the shown especially with season 4, the show has begun to walk on its own two feet now and I will be honest it has instantly gone from walking to running. the final episode of this season was the absolute pinnacle of the entire series. the final 10 minutes of the episode were no doubt some of the best moments, i couldn't work out whether to burst into tears or scream with joy due to the arrival of a beloved and much missed character. the producers of the series have left the show on a complete cliff hanger and i cannot wait to see what happens next season.

The best season finale on TV yet
ianrichard115 September 2014
It's very common for a TV series finale to leave everyone hanging - making the following season more exciting. But what makes this episode stand out is how everything came all together. Each and every character acted in an amazing way that made us feel that we are somehow part of their lives - like a brother or a sister or like a neighbor watching the Galleghers. A huge shout out to Noel and Cameron's role as Mickey and Ian - they are by far, the best and authentic gay couple on TV. Just watching their characters grow somehow will touch you, weather you are gay, bi or straight. They've both has given so many confused and closeted gays freedom. Again, this episode is by far the best finale for a season of a TV series.

Alive

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of those episodes where you have to watch it the second time through the series to fully understand the impact of it. The last scene with Frank and Carl might have been one of the best scenes I've ever seen. Absolute perfection. That last scene is addiction. This is where you realize that Frank Gallagher will do anything possible to make sure that he can continue drinking alcohol, and he truly believes that nothing can overtake him. Him shouting at the sky, and saying "Alive" is chilling. As we are just months away from this show's final season, this is an episode that you look back on and appreciate. This family may be different, but oh my they are special.

Absolutely amazing

This finale was such an amazing thing to experience, especially the ending scene ! Notable mention was Debbie's reaction to Fiona returning home, definitely made me cry 😭

Just wanted to really address how incredible Season 4 of Shameless has been. What really strikes me the most of how huge of a turning point Season 4 was in comparison to the previous seasons. Now don't get me wrong, S1-S3 of Shameless were all really amazing, but S4 to me was the biggest change for the series. The show took a much darker turn in S4, with the disruption of the family dynamic with Fiona going to jail, Frank's liver failure, Ian going AWOL and his diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder, and all of it truly made for a great experience to watch.

Just as it's Emmy's favorite season of the show, it's definitely one of my favorites and I'll never stop talking about it.
