- The outline of a woman's nipples can be seen through her shirt.
- (Forced) prostitution is the movie's theme, and it shows a lot of that in an explicit way. Many scenes contain (male on female as well as female on female) sexual intercourse, for money or taken by force.
- (Sexual) sadism is featured in an excruciatingly strong fashion. Several scenes of rape, but no nudity. There is thrusting and screaming.
- Only one scene of nudity, where two women are briefly topless.
- Two prostitutes talk about their work and their clients in an explicit fashion.
Violence & Gore

- A man threatens to burn a woman's eye with a cigarette.
- Hope Lost's take on sexual, physical and psychological violence is relentless. The movie switches from solid drama to horror about halfway through.
- The movie contains several major rape scenes, the victim a forced prostitute. Once the victim is a woman who is captured.
- A man prepares to force a woman to undergo an abortion by a crude and dangerous means.
- The prostitutes are beaten regularly.
- A pimp beats up an unruly client.
- Several criminals are shot or cut. Some are fatal.
- It is heavily implied the female soldier once caused the death of an interogatee, with graphic flashbacks.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

- The ending is especially intense and frightening.
- Several acts of violence - unsparingly shown - are very difficult to watch and make the movie wander down the road from serious drama to horror flick.
- The pimp's malice and his accomplices' total disregard for the two women becomes quite intense.
- The psychological terror Sofia and Alina are exposed to is extremely intense.
- Hope Lost contains a lot of highly intensive and frightening scenes, including rape, torture and emotional crippledom due to traumatising experiences.
Spoilers
Violence & Gore
- While being raped, the female soldier manages to kill her rapist with a razor blade. She herself is shot by another criminal in the process.
- In the movie's climactic scene, several men in scary costumes try to shoot a snuff movie with Sofia and Alina against their will. The two women are tortured and, by the men's plans, one would die from being forced to swallow a razor blade. The "production" is cut short by the soldier's intervention but to little avail.
