Beautiful

I actually cried during the wedding scene. It showed that there are no perfect instances. Sometimes, the fourth try is what makes it all worth it

I was weeping buckets

Ever since I started watching Modern Family, I really got into the characters and learned to love and admire them. The two final episode of season 5 are splendid.

Never have I been so deeply touched by an episode like this. I literally cried during the wedding scene. Despite the many imperfections of the wedding, it was nevertheless the best possible version.

I am looking forward watching the next season. So sad that there will be an end.

The Wedding

Warning: Spoilers
Watching 5 seasons of Modern Family (the well executed jejune comedy) was a real joy. It's beautiful to see characters, especially the children, develop over years. That's something beautiful.

The wedding of Mitch and Cam appears to be a tough event. Getting from place to place facing challenge after challenge. The whole 5 seasons, and these last to episodes doesn't prepare the viewer for the sudden alteration at the actual (successful) wedding.

The most easy, simple music you could think of, performed on of the most driest configuration of instruments possible, the string quartet. It made me experience some kind of upbeat that for my mind wasn't easy to process. The little actions of the characters added to the whole plot of simplicity. It was beautiful. Especially considering the nature of the series.

I cried

Fantastic Ending!

Warning: Spoilers
The only reason this is not a 10, is because of the whole "lets-make-everything-wrong" wedding thing that Sitcoms think is funny. I will say Modern Family actually filled it with funny moments (friggin Manny and Luke marriage was hilarious). Just a tad too many disasters for me to give this episode a 10.

But when Jay tells mitch "you and I should take a little walk", then puts his arm out to walk Mitch down the aisle, was the sweetest thing i've ever seen.

S5: Polished and funny, even if the big name guests and novelty episodes do make the nature of the show apparent
bob the moo5 November 2015
I pretty much say the same thing every season about this show – that I'm no fan of very polished network sitcoms – although I do keep coming back to this one. The reason is that, as well as being slick and polished a product, it is also consistently funny. This season continued that trend, although it also continued the trend of being more and more 'corporate' as it continues to be successful and have ratings to hit. This season has a loose structure around the theme of Mitchell and Cameron's wedding, allowing enough of a narrative to hold it together but not enough so that it gets in the way of generally being looser weekly episodes.

As before the writing has lots of good lines, and the plots are mostly good. I do have to give credit to the show for things like, for instance, adding a baby to the show but never needing to really use that baby as a plot device (indeed at times I wonder why they added the child as it doesn't seem to add a great deal to the show). This is the same here, so the wedding is a solid plot, and although topical it doesn't seem forced to make things happen. If anything I thought what was less successful was the expansion of several things that remind me this is a network sitcom. The novelty episode is the most obvious one – not the standard 'weekly' free-standing episode, but the one that has a novelty hook to be trailed the week before and make it stick in viewers' minds. The best example is the Australian episode, which comes out of nowhere, but gets the show away from the usual setting which cannot help buy freshen it up. Of course, this is balanced by the episode being very funny, but it does come with that feeling. Similar to this is the sheer volume of famous faces in cameo roles; some work, some don't but generally it does start to feel like a show trying to keep relevant and fresh and get those ratings up.

That said, such things are minor complaints because generally the writing is funny, and the main cast are very talented with their delivery; O'Neill is reliable of course, Burrell has great physical comedy, and even Anderson-Emmons has good timing even if she continues to walk a very fine line between cute and annoyingly precocious. With such an ensemble cast though individual weaknesses do not come through so much (for instance, too much of Manny is never a good thing, so we never get too much!). The scale and age of the show may mean it is not as fresh and new as it once was, but the weaknesses that comes with this generally do not cancel out the show being funny and well performed.

Pam Tucker actress

If you watch closely with the few cameo's that Pam makes where you see her face, the character is not played by Dana. Anyone agree, confirm or think otherwise??

Season Five
zkonedog4 July 2019
The previous four seasons of Modern Family all garnered five-star ratings from me. While this Fifth Season still provided a lot of laughs, it also had some "dry" episodes that knocked the star ranking down a notch.

A big storyline this season revolves around the upcoming nuptials of Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and all the foibles that event causes both in preparation and execution. Daughter Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) has some of the best lines of the whole season watching her daddies try to pull off the event.

All the other principle cast members are spot-on as usual. It is a bit weird to see youngest Dunphy child Luke (Nolan Gould) getting so old, but the show transitions with him pretty well.

Where I felt the season was a little stale? The stuff involving Jay (Ed O'Neill) and Gloria (Sofia Vergara), especially their new "Man-ny" Andy (Adam DeVine), a live-in servant not to be confused with the real Manny (Rico Rodriguez).

Like I said, this is still a funny season of the show, but there were a few plotlines and even a few whole episodes that just weren't quite as utterly hilarious as the show had been in the past. I hate to call a season like this a "bad year", but I guess it kind of was compared to other seasons previous. I am heartened, however, by the fact that the most similar comedy to this, that being "The Office", fell off the table with a much more resounding thud when it starting wearing out its welcome. Maybe this is the beginning of that route for "Modern Family", but I still enjoyed watching these episodes quite a bit.

OK..But not the best
frazzley23 May 2014
The start of the 5th season was very promising but modern family has really gone down since then, this episode contained one minor joke that wasn't that funny. The hundreds of story lines introduced were abandoned. The Haley-Andy storyline was a welcome change and the part I most enjoyed. It was a welcome change from the old Haley, I enjoyed seeing her change and mature into appreciating kindness and putting other's feelings first.. But even this, the writers left at an unsatisfying ending. I forgot the argument between cam's parents and found I couldn't care less whether they got back together. The writers are also milking the gay theme making Cam and Mitchell act in silly manners at any opportunities. In this episode Luke and Manny were not given much screen time, making the episode seem a little more mature. After the much better start to the season, I was left a little disappointed by this episode and was left wondering where the family can go from here.
