Best episode of the season
NikkiBay827 August 2019
This episode, by far, was the best episode of the season. Grossman played the roll of Pepper so exquisitely that I couldn't catch my breath during the intense scenes. I was blubbering like a baby and I had to take a moment after the episode ended to collect myself.

Pepper has been in the background for this entire season. After this episode, I'm so disappointed that they didn't have her character in the forefront. Grossman is a phenomenal actress, as shown in this episode, and it's too bad that her gifted acting skills went to waste in the other episodes. Her performance was definitely award-winning and unforgettable.

From Out Of Left-Field, A Monumental Episode!
explorer80121 December 2014
I was a bit concerned viewing the 1st episode for "Freak Show". Not because I didn't love it, but because it was so phenomenal that I wondered if they could keep it up! Lange, Bates, and Paulson(s!) gave so much depth in that episode and it almost seemed to be bringing too much "WOW" to the table much too quickly.

Which I even admired, but wondered about the "too much, too soon" HOOK-EM QUICK charade. Then Lange so tragically/beautifully performed Bowie's "Life On Mars" near the end. I was in complete awe & in that moment I somehow just knew that "Freak Show" was going to redeem "Coven". (A fan of previous seasons, though "Coven" had it's issues"). "Life On Mars", accompanied by her fascinating "monsters" was so haunting and well-designed/produced. It was during that song on that 1st episode that I was in that rare "mouth-open/this could be truly special" mode! Then as more musical numbers came rolling in following weeks, I wondered if it was only playing off the success of "Asylum"s pristine "Name Game" montage (Or even more scarier, a version of AHS: Glee!")

I worry about overkill with Ryan Murphy. Examples: "Glee", "Nip/Tick", and sadly last year's "AHS: COVEN" which began beautifully then lost itself somewhere in mid-season, becoming: "Who's the Most Annoying, Evil Bitch" by the finale episodes, spiced up with a moment or two of awkwardly-staged (bless her heart)-- Stevie Nicks cameos that seemed like music videos to me. It's good we had Kathy Bates' delicious role with a few other cast members to keep it afloat during those "red flag moments". By the finale I literally was just rooting for Lange to just keep it going as Grand Supreme. I could almost not have cared any less. Not intending to reminisce on the pilot and "Coven" so much, but Twisty the clown was gimmicky to me. YET--it still brilliantly worked due to it's timely manner...and because of the actor's incomprehensibly expressive performance using almost entirely only his eyes to act. Dingy, dirty,blood-stained, deformed clowns are terrifying enough in any case. But a murderous clown in a public park, on a lovely summer's day doing such dastardly things to his victims is indeed fresher & more visceral.

I was already sick of hearing about the new season and the scary damned clown...too gimmicky for such a smart show. But no sooner was I getting a bit irritated (merely because it deserves to be remembered as more than the "Eerie Clown" season), when Finn Wittrock (Dandy) was tousled in. That made Twisty seem less awful as the season has progressed (Wittrock is an AMAZING actor; very fun to watch).

So this one tonight was the "PEPPER" episode that loyal fans have been salivating over! And it was worth the wait. I have noted how carefully they have had Pepper shuffling around in the background this season, but doing nothing to progress the plot. This episode was her moment to shine, even more so than she was able to in "Asylum".

I refuse to spoil anything here, but Naomi Grossman takes every opportunity to show us who Pepper was and she does it convincingly with heartbreaking results. If Pepper had been a bigger part I am sure she'd be looking at award nominations for this.

This episode also provided the opportunity to bring back two "AHS" alumni: Mere Winningham as Pepper's sister, and the "oh-so-missed" Lily Rabe...if you haven't heard...reprising her "pre-possessed" Sister Mary Eunice character from "Asylum"!

Without ruining the episode, I'd like to state that it was the most lovely, poignant episode of the season thus far. It really shifted gears! Lange & Grossman have scenes that almost brought me to tears. It also showed yet another layer of Elsa for us to decipher...this time a sincere, compassionate, maternal side to stuff in the proverbial "Elsa Box".

It was a pleasure to see so much of Grossman acting her ass off; great to see Lange unveil yet another facet of her complex character; bravo to Lily Rabe's Mary Eunice return (albeit too brief); and there were some big developments for Angela Bassett finally. With Ethyl gone, it seems she's taking the reigns and the troupe seem to be in good hands.

Not much going on with Jimmy, Dandy, or others this week, but Pepper deserved and received a complete episode!

--Does anybody else feel like Michael Chikilis (Dale) has done fine, but now just seems to be walking around with bottles all the time? They completely wasted the talents of Evan Peters in "Coven". It killed me to watch him grunt around all season.

FYI--A SURPRISE ENDING THIS WEEK! I AM TAKEN BY SURPRISE**

**ONE NAGGING QUESTION--Wouldn't Pepper (who is far from an idiot) notice in the following years as Sister Jude (Elsa), Kit (Jimmy), and Dot/Bette (Lana) entered the asylum? Minus 2 wooden legs, one head, and webbed-hands, they don't appear any differently between seasons. I like the connection of seasons idea (if they don't overdo it), but does anybody else sense the implausibility here? No matter, it's been an appetizing, most welcome season thus far...(now praying: "Don't ruin the finale episodes, Ryan Murphy! When you're good, you're SO GOOD).

Best episode of the entire show
christie-215361 October 2020
At the time I am writing this review, 9 seasons of AHS have been released. This episode is by far the best throughout all seasons. I rewatch all of AHS every year, so I've seen season 4 many many times. The story of how Elsa found Pepper moves me to tears every single time. The ending breaks my heart.

Beautiful, touching, heartbreaking
declancampbell925 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is so important because it shows the lows that humanity can really go. What happens to poor Pepper in this episode is 100% something that has happened many times in real life. It's so easy to pin things on the different and disadvantaged people. Her sister and sisters husband are pure evil, the lowest of the low and tragically these type of people do exist in real life and the same situation has been played out many times before. It's important to show this in a tv series and raise awareness on it.

As an episode itself it's incredibly well done, the writing, the music, the acting. One of the best if not the absolute best episode in American horror story. It cements Pepper as one of the greatest and most tragic characters in tv. It's so heartbreaking and so real.

Orphans - The Return to 'Asylum'
matthewpitts522 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
What great it is to get taken back to the brilliance of the second season. "Orphans" is the first ever American Horror Story episode to connect with another season.

"Orphans" places a death close to Pepper which places her towards tradegy. Maggie and Desiree clash and Maggie is forced to choose which side she is on, and Stanley tries to take advantage of Jimmy.

"Orphans" is a return to form, albeit this sure is just a one off like "Mordrake Part 2". Another coincidence I've noticed is the better episodes this season all feature a decent Elsa flashback, strange that is as I've found Jessica Lange to have stayed one season too long. Also it was nice to have a supporting character like Pepper have solid screen time and her acting was amazing. Top American Horror Story episode.

My first review on IMDb just because of this episode
emilsajak23 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Once I finished watching this episode, I was very impressed and excited, so I decided to come here to check the 'score' of this episode and guess what... I wasn't surprised. It got 9.3 of 10 - the best score (so far) than any other episode this season.... and then I decided to write my first review on IMDb.

I was truly amazed. This episode was some kind of 'break-down' in front of all other episodes; I mean, instead of killing more 'freaks' and do more twisted scenes - they decided to make (mostly) a one-character-story episode, but in a very different way... Personally I wasn't interested in the character of Naomi Grossman's "Pepper", but the way she (and all the writers) have represented all her story... I just have no words... it was impressing! And to see the "good side" of Elsa... I just didn't expect it... I mean, come on people; Elsa's character & behavior in all other episodes was mostly selfish, so I think that most of us didn't expect that emotional side of her.

In few words: This episode was a pretty nice surprise for me and for all the AHS fans (I think) and I hope they'll keep maintaining this style for many more seasons.

BTW. I don't know why, but I like the opening of this season a lot; it's so twisted and has got a lot of weird and sexual madness that only writers can explain.

BTW2: Check these videos: 1. "Becoming Pepper": http://youtu.be/HHcgVOt1aao 2. "Creating Pepper": http://youtu.be/4GqUgqx62v8

See you at the end of the season!

btw3. Sorry for my English :P

Rejuvinated My Hopes For Season 4
xavierkallmex4 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I'm going to come out and say it: this was by far the best episode of Freak Show, far outpacing any other episode in terms of quality and the way it pulls on your heartstrings.

After paying for the new season on Amazon Instant Video I was especially hyped for this season, loving all of the previous 3 (Season 1 & 3 being my personal favourites). I'll admit, the only reason I kept watching was because of the way it structured its episodes; it was done in such a way that it told a story each episode which explained a side characters back-story. I expected this to last maybe 5 episodes, which would then be able to open up into something more grand, but sadly it kept that structure for most of the time. But then, this episode appeared near the end of it's run and, I admit, I cried a total of 3 times during this episode.

AHS is no stranger to making me tear up - at least once per season. But this season, a total 5 times I was left in tears. Twice when the twins were making their speeches, one when they were left in a shed in the middle of nowhere and were about to be surgically separated, and once when they proclaimed their love to Lobster Boy. But this episode...

You could definitely feel the connection between Pepper and Elsa in this episode - you could tell they had a long history together, and Jessica Lange's absolutely sublime acting backed that up even more. Not to mention the extremely well placed Asylum throwback, which thankfully didn't seem out of place at all. This episode sets up Asylum so perfectly, and Pepper being separated from Elsa is truly heartbreaking.

This episode is definitely the one I'll remember most about Freakshow, apart from that chilling scene in the last episode with the mass murdering. Bravo, bravo.

An amazing episode
patrickfile22 December 2014
Wow. Just wow. What an episode.

It's so deep. So charming, creepy and soul-full at the same time that I 'm not afraid to say to see its the best episode of the season.

I'm agree with the review saying i's 'too late', but that does NOT invalidate the rating of this episode.

Cinematic: 9/10.

Scrit: 9/10.

Acting: 10/10.

I love American Horror Story no matter if they have a regular season. You know what? Because a "regular season" it's way better than any "regular season" in any other TV series.

Can't wait for the ending and the next season!

My heart
fallen_voice16 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This may have been one of the hardest episodes of television I've ever watched. Pepper's story was a mystery during season 02 and to see how her story ties to season 04 is fantastic and completely heartbreaking. I think I was crying from her very first scene in this episode until some time after I finished watching it. Pepper was a character I enjoyed so much and was rooting for since season 02. To see such a pure of heart character endure so much pain -loss after loss after loss, after giving nothing but unconditional love, just because of her differences, absolutely gutted me. Why her sister couldn't return her to the freakshow, where she was clearly adored...I know, this had to tie into season 02...

Humanity can be so cruel, and while it shows itself in different ways now, than it did then, this episode is still so relevant. Naiomi Grossman's performance in this episode was beautiful and painfully perfect.

The only reason I gave this episode a 9/10, is because I think this was a story we could have seen during Asylum.

Pepper's Story
ZegMaarJus3 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode begins with Salty, he died at the camp in his sleep. Pepper is mourning. Pepper goes crazy when Desiree wants to leave. Elsa tells about Pepper's history, and how she met her for the first time. Elsa brought Pepper to her sister. Larry killed his own son: Lucas and Pepper got arrested for it. Pepper got dumped in the Asylum by her sister. Nice episode of American Horror Story Season 4, Pepper had a leading role in this episode. Nice formed with many shots of the past.

a little too late...
roni_saint22 December 2014
i discovered ahs a year ago, a friend of mine suggested that i watched it, and so i did. i finished s01 and s02 on one weekend, i gotta say that one episode was enough to get me hooked on that show, the main reason was that the show had this line that u can see how the plot was developing not exactly but u could wounder on what's coming next. i agree that s03 had some boring parts (and some holes in the plot) but overall it was pretty descent. i was looking forewords to this season more than any other show and i gotta say i am pretty disappointed so far, the main thing a loved about it is the fact that u have a good horror story with brilliant casting and script alongside with quality set and visually. s04 has it all but the good script, the story is lame and not much for building characters or the plot with back story's like a classic ahs season. o.k so this mid season epi was pretty good i was looking forward to see how brayen Murphy's going to connect the dots, and it was amazing, peppers story was quite emotional as it was interesting. but still, i think that we should get this kind of level at any or at least most of the episodes. so, i hope next season will have more of that cause even if all the remain episodes left, will be in the same level, it doesn't make up for a whole season gone wrong!.

S4.E10 - Heartbreaking Episode [9/10]
panagiotis199331 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S4. E10) My Live Reaction / Review for American Horror Story Season 4 Episode 10 ''Orphans''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. One of the pinheads died? That sucks. So nice to see Ma Petite again. Stanley wants Jimmy's hands? He is nuts. Elsa left Pepper with her sister? That sucks. Is that sister Mary from Asylum? That's cool. Pepper's sister gave her to the Asylum? That's so sad. They murdered their own baby and they blamed poor Pepper? That's so disturbing and unfair. This episode was so very sad. Overall this episode was good, my rating is 9/10.

a great episode that should have been in asylum not freakshow
jackDee-5656519 January 2021
This is a fantastic episode, this would be a ten but due to it being in the wrong season it has to be a seven because by having it on freakshow you make it a filler episode , this was really a asylum episode
