When Emma Stone, star of Disney’s Cruella and Searchlight’s Poor Things, introduced CEO Bob Iger at the company’s Upfronts presentation this week – the first time that the former TV chief had been on stage at the advertising rodeo in 30 years – it was clear that this is no longer just a TV event.
“To say a lot has changed since 1994 would be an incredible understatement and I’m not just talking about the color of my hair, or my fashion choices,” Iger said.
Stars such as Ryan Reynolds, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell and Jake Gyllenhaal were all highly visible presences across the week to promote their recent and upcoming feature films.
It marked a sea change for the Madison Avenue set, who were previously treated to a cavalcade of television stars promoting the small-screen, usually fresh from the broadcast pilot process. Unlike April’s CinemaCon,...

Reese Witherspoon has bent and snapped her way into a full-fledged “Legally Blonde” empire.
After playing L.A. sorority girl turned Harvard Law School student — and arguably, feminist icon — Elle Woods in 2001, Witherspoon has led sequel “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde” and is slated to star in a third film written by Mindy Kaling and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” co-creator Dan Goor. Kaling previously teased that the third film will center on Elle Woods reevaluating both her career and her perspective on life at age 42, telling Time magazine that she would never want the character to “be canceled or become a Karen.”
While the status of that trilogy installment is still unknown, given that the feature was announced in 2022, Witherspoon has turned instead to building out the “Legally Blonde” brand through TV.
IndieWire can confirm that a “Legally Blonde” prequel series titled “Elle” is in the works at Prime Video, with Witherspoon producing.

The Cannes Film Festival opened Tuesday with expectations that the big theme of this 77th edition will be #MeToo, even if rumors of an imminent bombshell exposé involving 10 prominent cinema figures were quashed overnight.
France’s #MeToo wave, sparked by actress and filmmaker Judith Godrèche’s decision to speak up about sexual abuse she says she suffered as a teenager and her subsequent campaign to end what she calls a culture of silence in the French film world, will be omnipresent.
Godrèche’s actions have encouraged thousands of sexual abuse victims across all walks of life to speak up about their experiences.
The actress and filmmaker will be in Cannes for the world premiere on Wednesday evening of her resulting short film Moi Aussi, gathering 1,000 people who got in touch with her via social media channels to tell their stories.

French President Emmanuel Macron has clarified comments he made last year about Gérard Depardieu which seemed to suggest his support for the actor in the face of a tide of sexual assault accusations, which the latter has denied.
Speaking in an interview with French women’s magazine Elle, published on Wednesday, Macron suggested his comments had been misinterpreted and that he was not “complacent” about the issues around sexual harassment and abuse.
“I just want a respect for our principles, such as the presumption of innocence. These same principles which will allow justice to rule next October and that is a good thing.” he said.
Depardieu is due to be tried in October on charges of sexual assault on two women on a film set in 2021, while accusations of sexual assault and rape by actress Charlotte Arnould are also making their way through the courts.

Emilia Clarke’s arc in Game of Thrones has been a subject of both fury and annoyance over the years — and for good reason. Be it her manipulative benevolence, or little by little transformation into the Mad Queen, or her full-blown turn to tyranny — Danaerys Targaryen’s journey has been a rollercoaster ride and her character remains an enigma whose first moment is as memorable as her last, and every second in between is just as remarkably imprinted on the audience’s memory.
Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones [Credit: HBO Entertainment]But even in a character as legendary as the Mother of Dragons, there exist moments of conflict that underline the HBO series because of the socio-political climate of the reality we live in. It is one such moment that had Emilia Clarke breathing a sigh of relief while filming a particularly seductive scene on the show.

Dakota Fanning has revealed the one date every year that Tom Cruise never forgets: her birthday!
During a recent interview for Harper’s Bazaar with her Ripley co-star Andrew Scott, the actress shared that she got her first mobile phone as a gift from the Top Gun: Maverick star.
After Scott guessed the correct answer to “Who gave Dakota her first cellphone?” saying, “Ok, well it’s going to be some Hollywood icon … Tom Cruise,” Fanning confirmed that the actor gifted her a Motorola Razr for her 11th birthday while they were filming 2005’s War of the Worlds together.
“Oh, my God, I was so excited,” the Twilight actress recalled, before noting that she “didn’t have anybody to call or text at that time,” so she wasn’t exactly sure how useful the present was for her.
“You know, I was 11,” she quipped. “But I loved having it. I loved it.

Conor McGregor vs. Dwayne Johnson: Who Cashed the Bigger Check?
Did Conor McGregor really set a world record with his Road House payday? That’s what the onetime UFC superstar has been bragging about in recent weeks, claiming he’s now “the highest paid first-time actor of all time.” If true — and McGregor, 35, hasn’t disclosed how much he got for his debut role in Amazon’s reboot of the 1989 kickboxing flick — he would beat Dwayne Johnson’s record of $5.5 million for 2002’s Scorpion King. While some have scoffed at his claim, sources indicate he was indeed paid in that ballpark, and given the Irishman’s stature in the martial arts world and the offers he has turned down (he accepted a role opposite Vin Diesel in 2017’s xXx: Return of Xander Cage, only to back out before filming began) it wouldn’t be surprising if some sort of record was broken.

Will Bruiser get his own show?
Amazon is teaming with Reese Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine banner to develop a Legally Blonde TV series. Gossip Girl and The O.C. grads Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are attached to write the TV offshoot, whose premise is being kept under wraps. (We don’t know if it’s about the dog, but here’s hoping!)
Schwartz and Savage and their Fake Empire banner, Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine’s Lauren Neustadter, Marc Platt and Amazon MGM Studios are all producing the potential offshoot.
It’s unclear if Witherspoon has any plans to reprise her role as Elle Woods in the potential TV series, which comes as Amazon has been scouring the MGM library to for titles to revive since acquiring the storied studio a few years ago. The streamer and Hello Sunshine are looking to turn the Legally Blonde films into a multiple-show...

Don’t expect to see Kristen Stewart in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although the actor is no stranger to big budget Hollywood tentpoles, from the “Twilight” movies to “Snow White and the Huntsman,” she recently said on the “Not Skinny but Not Fat” podcast that the studio system would have to dramatically change in order for her to sign on to a Marvel tentpole. That, or Greta Gerwig would have to be directing.
“I will likely never do a Marvel movie … it sounds like a fucking nightmare, actually,” Stewart said, noting that she does like making “big movies because I like people to watch them when I’m in them.”
Podcast host Amanda Hirsch said that Stewart could’ve maybe played a version of Spider-Man’s love interest Mary Jane Watson at one point in her career, but the actor said “the system would have to change” in order for...

Tom Cruise is the personification of the word ‘Superstar’ thanks to his unbeatable charm and a career graph that only seems to go upwards. With films like Top Gun: Maverick and Jerry Maguire, the actor has time and again proven why he is the best of the best in the film industry. Naturally, a superstar of his caliber will have gigantic paychecks coming his way, often upsetting the gender pay gap.
Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell in Mission: Impossible 7
Tom Cruise has previously come under fire by Alec Baldwin for taking up too much of a film’s budget, leading to the actresses getting paid significantly less. However, if you have seen any of the Mission: Impossible films, you’d know that Tom Cruise is nothing short of a feminist, keeping the salaries aside. The films have constantly cast strong female characters, breaking the stereotypes we’ve been seeing...
