OK, but a missed opportunity
torndownunit9 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I don't generally write reviews on movies on here. I was a big fan of the TV and donated to the kick-starter though so I was anxiously awaiting seeing this movie.

I am definitely torn on it. I don't agree with reviews saying it's completely horrible. It has some very funny parts sprinkled throughout it, and is watchable. But it's just so so so far removed from the spirit of the original show.

I am not even a football fan, but because of the way humour and football were mixed in the show, I loved it. I also feel the football side of things was an important part of the characters in the show, and obviously a reason the Goat House existed in the first place. I marked this as containing 'spoilers' because it's hard to not point out that there is literally about 2 minutes of football content in the movie.

It's basically a party movie. But it doesn't really do an amazing job at that either. Everything feels rushed and again, the humour is just a different type of humour than the show was. Take one of the better party episodes from the show, but stretch it out with quite a bit of filler for an hour and 30 minutes, and you have the movie.

Most of the really funny parts (to me) revolved around Thad and his dialogue. But it would be pretty hard to screw up that character. That's one consistent element from the TV show, and the reason I can still give this a 5 ratings despite my criticisms. He really does carry the movie in my opinion.

I guess it could have been much worse. But it's definitely not anything fantastic. I really think they should have stuck to their original formula more. The one that gained the show a rabid fan base the helped them fund this movie.

I'm mixed. They did things right and they did things wrong.

Warning: Spoilers
I had high hopes coming in to this movie. The show was incredibly funny, and I was expecting something more like the show in this.

I expected to see Thad in the NFL, with possible NFL player cameo's. Instead we see a Thad who has somehow had his contract terminated without anybody noticing. Seriously, if the number 1 pick in the draft is cut, I'm sure Moran would have found out before he did. Also, getting stabbed by a rhino (and not being physically injured) is a lame excuse for Thad getting cut. It's just not realistic.

Don't get me wrong, they did things right: 1) Bringing back Radon and Shilo I was upset after season 1 when Shilo left and was smiling when I saw him pick up Alex. By that time in the movie, it was a much needed cameo. I wish it had lasted longer though, as he is only there for a short amount of time. When it comes to Radon, he didn't even have a line until the last scene. Radon was hilarious in season 2, and would've loved him to resurrect DREAMS maybe. 2) The comedy was stepped up in some parts. In the first 20 minutes or so, it is hilarious. Thad's interview was maybe the funniest part in the movie. Thad's character alone was funnier than I had remembered. Him tracing his drawing of Thadland is genius. 3) The roles of Larry, Donnie, and Harmon Harmon did what he did in the show, Larry was coach, and Donnie is gay. All of these story lines were very funny to see pan out and they did a good job. 4) Bringing back Mary Jo. Not really sure why she disappeared in Season 3, but I was glad she was back. 5) Dick-Dawg By far the funniest character for me. Everything he did was hilarious.

Things they did wrong: 1) NO FOOTBALL This is the movie's biggest flaw, as there is close to no football in the movie. BMS is not BMS without football. 2) Coach Daniel's role I liked it at first, but his role kept getting smaller. And without his guy Jon Jon, there is no fun in him. 3) No Jon Jon or Debra. Jon Jon is a BMS classic and was sad to not see him there, would've liked to see Debra there as well. 4) Thad's death plan I'm not really sure what actually happened towards the end of the movie. Thad was carrying a loaded gun which first made me think he was gonna shoot himself when he mentioned him in heaven. He then went down with the Goathouse and presumed dead. Don't worry, he is not dead. He is resurrected as Mr. PoonTang somewhere far away (in a ridiculous looking wig and mustache which made me spit out my drink it was so funny). 5) The role of Sammy We saw Sammy nude way too many times in this one. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. He didn't play a big enough role and turned into a bit of an animal when he ate Billy the Goat. Then he tried to beat up Dick-Dawg which was useless. I would have been okay with Dick-Dawg leaving him there for dead. 6) Different Goat House Not sure why it was different.

Overall it was enjoyable and funny. I really hope the show comes back though.

After a long wait.. Not really worth it.

Warning: Spoilers
As a big fan of the TV series I was looking forward to the continued adventures of Alex, Sammy, Thad and the other members of BMS. Now it's always a difficult task to tack on a stand-alone movie to a series (that ended almost 6 years ago), and whilst I admire the fact they took a crack at it, this movie fell well short of my expectations. The biggest problem I have with this movie is the complete lack of sports.. BMS was centered around the exploits of a college football team, and their relationship on and off the field. In Rise of Thadland (ROT) we're treated to one lackluster practice session and that's all she wrote on football. The rest of the movie centers around one completely implausible party (not enough money to save the Goat House yet a party that would make Mr Hefner blush). Speaking of Hefner, early on in the movie they set the tone that ROT has a different rating than the TV series (topless girls galore) but when they have the chance to really push the envelope they hold back. In fact the only full-frontal nudity is supplied by Sammy's character (I'm going out on limb here and say we were privy to Sammy's private parts WAY TOO MUCH!!!) The movie felt flat and disjointed and the use of returning characters Shilo and Radon was nothing short of criminal. No catch ups, reunion scenes just brief semi-cameos. Mmmm time to revisit the TV series and get back that BMS feeling.

Thadland Pie
kosmasp17 April 2022
I never even knew this existed - though to be fair now with the Reacher tv show it does make sense to bring this back to those who missed out on this. So as you can tell I have never seen the tv show, but since this was part of a deal with the streaming service I opted to watch it. And I'm fairly certain this works well even without having seen the show. Although I guess I would have been more in the know if I had.

Whatever you think of the man or the G. O. A. T (pun intended, you know if you've seen it) - the humor is quite gross at places to say the least. Now you either stoop down to that level and get jiggy with it or you will hate this and be annoyed by it. But the actors are really good in it. They really just let themselves lose and roll with the flow. I mean acting the way they do ... just plain crazy. There are more than a few cringe worthy moments and even "hotter" moments are intercut with something completely ridiculous. So while any of the females (and a few of the males) would be able to attend a model/walkway event, this is not meant to titilate you as much. And don't expect too much in the nudity department. There is a bit - no pun intended, especially to the one male nude scene. I might even watch the tv show one day ... why not? Even if I was never in a fraternity and I don't believe this would be something I could do. It's just a movie, right? Never forget that.

Despite it all still a positive experience

The premise fits a show a lot better than a movie but despite it all this still remain a fun experience which is well worth it if you're a fan of the show.

Really weird ten last minutes tho.

An anemic follow up to a great series
death-hawk123 December 2018
Blue Mountain State was a series that was absolutely hilarious, celebrating the college campus drinking culture of many US establishments of higher education, bro culture, near complete disregard of women beyond their physical attributes and despite purportedly being about a football team a single game was seen across 3 complete series. Backed up by a cast of 1 dimensional characters the TV show BMS was a hedonistic feast for male 13-20 something viewers everywhere.

The Rise of Thadland however did not capture this same magic in any respect. Although featuring that same cast of characters they seem slightly out of place in this new feature, hollow renditions of previously well loved caricatures. The plot of the film is simple enough and totally predictable in as many aspects of a traditional BMS episode. However where the TV show's plot lines were funny the film's felt as though a single BMS episode had been stretched to the 90 minute mark. Unfortunately such stretching left the film mostly mirthless and in many respects just plain sad as there weren't enough jokes to go around despite some brief moments of hilarity.

Overall I give credit to the showrunners in trying to milk what was a very entertaining golden calf. However they ended up merely flogging a dead horse.

The movie has some really great scenes and others really funny, but overall, it's mixed.
MateusN17 February 2016
The intro of the movie is great and starts really strong, but as soon as it's over the 'new' BMS is shown. Different goat house and different uniforms for both the football players and cheerleaders. Something that is definitely going to disappoint the fans and hardcore viewers, right in the beginning.

The first forty minutes of the movie will feel different but will stay true to the series. At this point is arguably the 'peak' of the movie, the conversation between Donnie and Mary Jo. This is truly the only part something new comes up and the only one with little taste of character development, for the whole movie (One of the biggest issues).

Then, there's a hilarious scene with Alex Moran and Mary Jo, but afterwards is mostly comedy for the sake of comedy. Characters go off character and the movie stop feeling like the series and it becomes almost boring, but it's still enjoyable.

The movie certainty doesn't live to series expectations, the jokes aren't as funny and the movie fails to capture the immersion of the series. The movie is not bad, if you enjoyed the series this is a must watch, but don't expect any closure or story follow up from the series (Thad's NFL story line is just too flat, little is shown and it doesn't work well).

This movie is pretty much just a reunion with a big party, and that is very well delivered. If you watch BMS for the parties, boobies and drugs, this movie will be perfect for you.

Not what I was envisioning as a BMS fan...
sradawec-518063 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I was envisioning Thad in the NFL with appearances being made by NFL players. Seeing him in his uniform or practicing for his new NFL team. Seeing him getting drafted should have been a scene in the movie, considering how much they talked about it during the show. We really got none of that. Very small amounts of the plot had anything to do with football at all.

When I heard they were bringing back Radon who is absolutely brilliant in his role on the show, I had high hopes, maybe we would catch up with him in the NFL or see him resurrect DREAMS on television now being a pro player. I was really disappointed to see how little he was used in the movie. Same goes for Shilo. Thought it was very forced to work him back into the story. Thought maybe we would see him playing in NFL or rival college team . But he had a very minor part in the movie.

Would have really liked to see more of a story line with the development of the characters going forward rather than just over the top drugs and partying the entire time.

Some actors in the movie are on the wrong side of 30 playing college kids. The show went off the air nearly 5 years ago now, there was way too much time in between for the characters to still be playing the same ages as they were in the show.

Really wish they were able to make a real theatrical movie with a real budget because based on how great the TV show was, I think they could have made a great movie.

Definitely Made for the Fans, Blue Mountain State: Rise of Thadland Offers More of the Same for Those Who Want it
CANpatbuck366421 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
If you check out my review for the Blue Mountain State series, you'll know I was a fan. It was too bad the show got cancelled and I definitely think it could have gone on a little longer. When word of the Blue Mountain State movie came about, I donated to the Kickstarter and waited for the theatrical release. That didn't happen but I checked it out anyway. I'm going to have a hard time reviewing this movie. As someone who loves movies and tries to objectionable watching them, this is not a good movie. But as a fan of the show and someone who has seen the whole series (more than once) I can also say that this movie is pretty faithful to the source material (it was written and produced by the same people who ran the show) and that I enjoyed seeing these characters again.

*Minor Spoilers Ahead* Alex Moran (Darin Brooks) is entering his senior year at Blue Mountain State. Most of the crew is still around Sammy (Chris Romano) is still the mascot for the Spirit Squad, cheering with his sister Mary Jo (Frankie Shaw). Donnie (Rob Ramsey) and Harmon (James Cade) are still playing for the team. Marty Daniels (Ed Marinaro) is still coaching, the biggest change is that the team seems to suck now. Thad Castle (Alan Ritchson) went pro after his senior year and went #1 in the NFL Draft. In typical Thad fashion, he's been throwing the money at everything he wants. The new dean at BMS announces to the team that he's tired of their crap and that he's taking the team house (The Goat-House) away from the football team. Alex is the team captain (he also lives in the house) so he won't let the house go but he needs someone to buy it. He goes to Thad to get the money for the house. Thad's not willing to do it immediately, Alex and him were friends but they also were at each others throats more than once. He promises Alex the money if he throws him his dream party, "Thadland". It's a carnival themed party with a mojito hot tub, a room full of different strains of weed and it snows cocaine. Alex gets everything together for The Goat House but he can't anticipate the direction the night will take.

If you're not familiar with the show, the show was full of drugs, partying and sex. Some people might have called it offensive but it was meant as a parody of college football and the excess around it. If you're a fan of the series, I'm happy to report that there's plenty more of all those things in BMS: Rise of Thadland. The biggest praise that I can give this movie is that it embraces what people liked about the show and gives you more of what you want. It's crass, non PC and it throws it right in your face.

The faithful nature of the movie extends to the characters. There are a couple of differences (I'll get to that later) but for the most part, everyone is well represented. Thad was always the funniest character in the show and the movie wisely centres around him (the law of diminishing returns applies to the jokes but Alan Ritchson still does a great job). They bring back everyone and as a fan, it was great to see everyone again (they even bring back Shilo).

This movie isn't without it's fair share of problems though. The show never had Emmy calibre writing or a complex plot-line but even so, Rise of Thadland isn't very well written. It's not as funny as the best episodes of the show, the characters are the same but they pump their eccentricities up way too high (Sammy vs. Billy the Goat 3 was just too much). They can't seem to decide whether they want to have some deeper subplots like the realization that Donnie is gay, which was actually a nice moment in the movie. Or how Mary Jo and Alex really should be together because they set that stuff up and then it devolves into gross-out or extreme jokes. The main plot line didn't even make sense, the movie just criticizes Alex endlessly, why? He's still in college, cut him a break for not having figured everything out. It didn't make me angry, it was nice they tried to add some depth to the characters but it seemed like a case of the movie wanting it's cake and eating it too. It's really hard to do a party comedy and have depth, it's like walking a tightrope and this movie fell off and into the net.

If you're a fan of this show, check out this movie. It's not amazing or even as good as the series but you'll get what you want out of it. If you've never heard of the show, this is hard to recommend. Rise of Thadland isn't a good movie, it has little to no plot and it's not as funny as the show. I don't like drawing that kind of line in the sand but I think that's what it comes down to.

Funny, but disappointingly senseless
revdavid-514974 March 2016
First of all, I've seen the series about 10 times, I'm a huge fan of BMS. Therefore I was very excited about the movie.

First of all, I'm not saying that the movie is not funny. It IS funny but there are some scenes that makes me want to thank Spike TV that they didn't let all the weird ideas of Romanski & Eric Falconer appear on the TV screen (Sammy & the Goat).

My problem is, that we didn't get what we were promised in the kickstarter video. We didn't see Thad graduate and go into the NFL. We didn't see Alex graduate and "fulfill his destiny on and off the field" Radon's and Shilo's "comeback" was like the most disappointing thing in the movie Plus, they've said that they would shoot the film on the same locations, where they had the series. I understand why they had to make a new goat house, but it just doesn't feel the same.

As they've said, if the movie will be a success, the series might come back. I hope if they do a season 4, they will do a different story, or just make some twist to make this movie forgotten (maybe that it all was just Thad's dream)

Does for the Series what Serenity did for Firefly...
giberoutatime2 February 2016
.... in that it gives closure on an awesome TV show in a more entertaining than expected fashion. Fans will love it!

Granted it's not all exactly the same. Different Goathouse, not all the cast is there (but more than I expected really) and it's just not the same without Rev Theory, but other than that....

DUDE! This is what fans have been waiting for!!! Thad was only a supporting character on the show at first and like Urkel on steroids (or rabies) he immediately became the star of the show and thus the center of the movie. But really Thad is BMS! And his story is our story. Only with more sloots.

The trailer only covers like the first half hour of the movie so there is much more to see I promise. We do see what has become of the other characters... Larry for instance. Radon and even Craig Shilo make an appearance. Coach has an interesting little plot line that is pulled from the headlines. Donnie has an arc of sorts... Sammy and Mary Jo are there and I dare say even Alex gets a sort of closure. But remember... This all takes place before the start of the season so there is plenty of room to add future BMS adventures!

It's not perfect but it's better than we could've hoped for, waaaaay more graphic than Spike would allow (language, full frontal sloots) and drug use galore!!! If you get past the party scenes the story picks up a bit more and there are even a couple of their trademark film spoofs. Alan Ritchson has made a name for himself doing a variety of film roles but will always be known as Thad Castle. He's a producer on this piece and hat's off to him and the whole team who kept the dream alive and made this awesome film. Watching the behind the scenes stuff on YouTube really makes one realize how limited they were filming; I'm glad they pulled it off. Kudos.

THADLAND is a must see for any true BMS fan and gives the characters and this world the over-the-top; egotistical; insane yet cathartic send off that the show never could. God Bless America and God Bless Blue Mountain State!

Hard to Accept
h-6192911 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I don't write many reviews but I felt I had to after watching the BMS Movie. I understand that the movie is low budget but do you really need a lot of money to show college kids drinking and playing football?

Being a huge fan of the TV show having watched and re-watched it many times I was excited as anyone to hear that they were going to make a movie. The trailer implied that it would lead on from the BMS TV show as well as bringing back some of our favourite characters from previous seasons (Radon and Shilo). So I am sure we were all thinking, football, drinking and crazy antics, and whereas the show did get the latter two it was missing one of the main aspects....FOOTBALL! There was literally 2 minutes of not even football at the start of the movie on a very run down looking field which was quite depressing and that's it. As for the drinking and antics I think they didn't do it right, the film was basically one giant party which made it feel like they didn't actually accomplish anything throughout the whole film. Using a different goat house didn't help either and just disconnected me from feeling the buzz of the old show, it felt cold and strange.

The two old fan favourites Radon and Shilo were expected to at least have a little role in the film, maybe on an opposing team or coming back to BMS to join Alex in his senior year, can you imagine how great it would of been if they included Alex playing against both Radon and Shilo as an ultimate showing on how far Alex has progressed while at BMS? Well we will never know since both made a cameo appearance at the end, Radon had literally like one line and Shilo a couple minutes of irrelevant screen time. Honourable mention for JON JON and Debra who were nowhere to be seen.

There were funny parts dotted around throughout the film but it felt like you kept waiting and waiting for something to happen to give the film some sort of edge, right up to the part when it ended. Even as I finish writing this I have bitter sweet memories of the TV show, the first episode with Alex preparing to laze off through college right up to him becoming the King of BMS and I wish that the film let the show go out with a bang instead of fizzling out as a surreal version of itself.

The show was really good, the movie just went too far.
matthewchippin6 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
As a fan of the show I was expecting more of the same -- low brow humour. With relatively low expectations going in, I have to say the movie exceeded my expectations in how bad it was. The story was over the top. I mean the whole party over football thing is great but I would've liked more football in the movie instead of a ridiculous story-line. Was actually expecting the movie to be about Alex Moran's final season at BMS and not about how the goat house had basically turned into a distopia. The only reason I gave this movie a 2 instead of a 1 is because I was a fan of the show and it was nice to see the characters again. But yeah, this movie just stretched everything too far. That's all I have to say, don't waste your time with it, it may actually ruin the show for you.

Confuzed

Warning: Spoilers
I had high hopes for this movie, why? Well because I have watched Blue Mountain State the TV show for few years.

This movie is annoying because it has no rhythm, It's like you are on drugs yourself. All those flashing lights and music for about 95% of the movie makes you go insane. If you like movies that has no script at all, and you like to smoke little bit of the green then this movie is perfect for you LOL.

I have spoken to some of my colleagues about this movie and they agree with me and said "what did I just watch!?"

Don't spend you time watching this movie, I don't get it how this movie has a solid 7 out of a 10 here at IMDb.

Thanks,

Gunnar

Pointless film
robbiedeherrera-9766510 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Why build the hype? This movie felt like the cast had a big party and got some videos of some awful one liners. The plot is simple, Alex Moran is on verge of loosing the goat house so he goes to Thad to get help and Thad says he'll help only if Moran throws him this huge party. Then the entire second act is just the party. The whole Donnie being gay didn't move the story at all. There was no closure from the great series, the football team was in it for maybe two minutes. This film really didn't have a point and I can see why the show was canceled.

5 year wait.....totally worth it.
juliantomescu-252632 February 2016
If you're a fan of the BMS series, then you will without a doubt have a blast watching Rise to Thadland. I felt a bit skeptical at first that the film will fall short from it's original feel, but boy was I wrong! I felt ecstatic to see the producers still keeping the original uncensored comedic feel that we all know and love from the series! In addition I was glad to see most of the side characters (Donny, Harmon, Larry, etc) getting a respectable amount of well deserved screen time. We were also introduced to several new characters which made for a refreshing experience.

I am truly grateful that the cast came back to create this film. This movie is perfect to watch if you're in college! Overall, Rise to Thadland far exceeded my expectations for a comedy, and as much as I would love for them to continue the series...there is no better ending to the BMS franchise than this film. Thank you.

This Will be the Worst of 2016
robsta2313 February 2016
This never seemed possible, but The Rise of Thadland is an even worse comedy than The Hangover Part II. It is raunchy only for the sake of trying to be funny, it is disgusting only for the sake of attempting to create shock humor, and there just simply isn't the energy in this movie which the television show had to offer.

The premise is so straightforward and simple that it gets to be a bore right after Thadland actually becomes a thing. Moran needs to win over Thad for him to buy the goathouse so it doesn't get taken away for them. Thad's request is simple: throw an awesome party for him and he'll put up enough money to win the goathouse over in the auction. The bulk of the movie is this party Moran agrees to throw, making most of the humor in the movie drug-related. We watch people trip out on drugs for the comedy, which ends up being a bore and not funny at all. Also, it is clear which part of the movie has an extended nc-17 clip in the bonus features, and it is too disgusting to imagine how the nc-17 version would have looked and not funny at all.

Of course Alan Ritchson as Thad shines as the star of the movie, though he is not the protagonist. He delivers the same goof ball we are all fond of in the television show, but the script just didn't allow him to shine AS MUCH as he did in the television series. The best moments focus around him, but sadly there are less than a handful of these moments.

There is no way that anything released in 2016 will be as terrible as this film.

I wanted to like this movie.
chopstixsolo10 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to like this movie, but it just wasn't what I expected after watching the series. I got into the show after it aired and I was happy to see that there was a movie to cap it off. I thought it would be a cherry on top of a sundae, this turned out to be an olive soaked in grenadine.

The movie had some funny moments, drug induced hilarity, Thad screaming, and some typical Thad behavior. My issue is with the over the top stuff and the lack of show inspiration. The party was too ridiculous, the show had a lot of partying but it was not to this level. It felt like a stretched out party episode that just went too long. The show had a football centered plot, and this had little to no football. It relied too heavily on Thad and his comedy (while I loved Thad on the show, it is better for him to have limited screen time), and it made the other characters (main characters from the show) fall to the wayside. Alex and Sammy were completely different characters from what they were on the show, and Thad just became dumber. I liked that characters like Donnie and Harmon got more screen time, and it worked, but it felt like they had more time than both Alex and Sammy, who were the main characters on the show. I won't even get into how they ruined Coach and the whole Dean situation. Also taking it away from the original locations took me out of the movie quickly. Not having the actual GOAT HOUSE and the original field was really distracting, especially since they used a bright white house, when the original house was brown.

Like I said, I wanted to love this movie like I did the show, I just couldn't enjoy it, mainly because it lost the spirit of Blue Mountain State.

Got the main theme but lost the essence of the show
emil_vogelius10 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Really loved the show. The whole idea was great and there was so much character potential. Too bad they blew it. It seems like the whole main theme in the series was lost. The main point was to do well in football and then all the crazy parties that went along with it. All the drama and thrill of being a football player in college. Alright real life football players probably never did this but hey. But they lost it. It went too far. The plot is loose and introduces way too many new people and a whole new scenario. I love the end plot twist with Thad being broke, that really hit the character of Thad. But the rest of the plot went bongos. Yeah there was some great scenes but they went too far out. The drugs were too many and too much, the feces and pee fumes... I just did not buy it as a real thing, yeah yeah maybe it was not meant to be seen as real but hey they always stuck to reality somewhat in the series. The whole plot just seems as they tried to find a way to shove as many characters from the series as they could into the movie. I like that they brought back the old players but that was not Shilo or Randall. Even coach Daniels is not really coach Daniels, but to be fair it was not as far off. And what happened to Jon-Jon he was a nice guy, gave a good twist. Randall seemed way different and Thad just somehow came off as too pathetic. They should have kept football as the focus. So after a long rant my conclusion is that even though I did not like the movie I still got my fat ass off the sofa and watched it. I still like BMS and what they should have done, really is re-air it. Make Moran train up someone new, bring the Pros into it and show their story, instead of leaving their story as a flap into nothing. Fx what does Shilo do right now other than flashing abs? And when did Sammy stop being funny and started being completely mental? The fun was watching Alex do triple down banging and Sammy trying to keep up with him. See Thad as a mixture of dumb, strict and touchy feely. See coach Daniels go nuts on someone and have Debby being a bitch. Please that was all I wanted... The only part of that I really got was coach Daniels going mental, although again a plot-hole... what happened to Debby and his huge house? It was only just about half a year after the end of the series (in movie time) Did Daniels really get that bad after just half a year (ish). Since when did he start excessive drinking? Okay he didn't seem sober but not stupid either. Well I was happy that more BMS content came out but the quality could have been double and still not near what I had hoped. Try again!

I remember watching this when it first came out, and I didn't really care for it. I just tried to watch it again, couldn't make it 20 minutes in. I'll always love the series, but they missed the mark on this big time

Awesome!

This movie was exactly what I was hoping for! If you are an avid fan of the show, you'll definitely love this movie. There is almost no plot and little to no football but who was watching the show for that part specifically? It was just a bunch of alcohol, drugs, girls, and sex; but that is kind of what to expect from a Blue Mountain State movie. Had a few laughs to die for throughout the movie and found myself genuinely satisfied at the end. So just to sum things up, please don't watch this movie in hopes of seeing a majestic art piece of a film because it's always raining cocaine in Thadland! 10/10 for any fan of the show.

Too much

The Rise of Thadland is a fantastic example of trying to make something a more extreme version of an already extreme concept. Another example of this is NPH as Barney in later seasons of HIMYA. When HIMYA found out people loved Barney, well they tried to make him more Barney-ish. It became very hard for the audience to view Barney as redeemable after this. When you make yourself a parody of yourself you risk becoming unrelatable and annoying.

BMS took characters balancing on the edge and gave them a shove with a Mack truck. It was like adding speed to an energy drink and wondering what went wrong. All of your characters became like the extreme guys from Harold and Kumar, and nobody likes those guys.

Entertaining, yet Average
Zjprohouse3 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
To say this movie wasn't entertaining would be a lie. It stays true to the show by having a boatload of ridiculous, over the top party scenes. If you were a fan of the show, like myself, you obviously liked that. However, the show had a stronger sense of plot, the fact that they were football players in college. The show made the atmosphere, while ridiculous, feel like a college campus.

The movie was less focused on the whole scenario, and spent 95% of the time on the party, but it was implausible (not that anyone watched the show for plausibility). It felt slightly rushed, and while I enjoyed some of the shock value scenes, some were just put in with no regards to the plot, which was weak in the first place (to save the Goat House). There was very little explanation of what happened after the finale of the show, it just kind of jumped in. I liked the show, and if you did, I'd recommend this movie, but keep in mind that it's more of a party movie than a college movie.

There is a reason this went Straight to Netflix -- it STINKS!

Remember when someone your Dad's age tried to do things to be "cool".It did not work then and it does not work now.

Nothing is sadder than a group of men in their early THIRTIES who are pretending to be College Students... and immature frat boy type college students at that.

Alan Ritchson is at least twelve years too old to be playing this role! He has pretty much aged out of the roles he had played so far in his career. If he is to have a future in the film business, he needs to start playing roles which are remotely similar to his chronological age.

This movie appears to have been made by a bunch of old geezers who are throwing in every counterculture thing they can think of -- all in an effort to make this film appealing to "the young folk". Most college students are not stupid enough to believe that this is "entertainment".

Especially offensive is the way in which Women are treated in this film. There is one particularly annoying character who is such an incredibly "Dumb Blonde", she will offend other blondes of sub average intelligence. Come on guys, this is not funny, it is just stupid and not in a good way.

While there are some viewers who will find this film enjoyable . For those of us who do NOT live in our Mother's basement, it is a total waste of time.

This One is Worse Than the First One!
jsmith98-125 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If there was ever a need to have a movie to show a totally unlikeable character, this one really fills the bill. The character "Thad" is the most obnoxious guy in the universe. In one scene in a restaurant when Alex is trying to get Thad to buy the house, Thad and his brother are telling jokes resulting in Thad saying to his brother "that was really funny, write yourself a check!" and "that was really funny, write me a check!" I liked Alan Ritchson in the movie Reacher. Comparing the two characters he plays in the two Blue Mountains and in Reacher is nothing short of impossible. I guess it's supposed to show what a good actor Ritchson really is. The other characters is this movie really stretch reality: Alex is a selfish conniving jerk; the dean is clueless; which coach is the coach? And Donnie is gay again with no story line to go with it.

Basically the plot here is that Thad will buy the Goat House if Alex will throw him the party to end all parties. When you see the resulting "party" it's obvious that Alex and company have spent more money on the party than what it would have cost to buy the Goat House several times over. Again, a reality check is needed. I'm sorry if I'm the only person to think this movie is stupid, but for me it started out stupid and then just got worse.
