- Annie and McQuaid go to Azerbaijan to find an ex-CIA employee connected to the bombing, Auggie's relationship with Natasha is in jeopardy, and Calder's call-girl acquaintance is in trouble with the law.
- Auggie works out with the CIA, while his relationships with jealous Natashia and still unsuspecting Hayle prove ever harder to juggle, that the Chicago bombing was planned not by the Russian FSB but by a previously mysterious embassies bomber. It's Auggie's former war companion and CIA colleague Nathan Mueller, who was missing and went rogue, twisted since his wife's death. - Annie goes to an out of the way pharmacy to pick up her prescription under the name Lisa Morton. She presents a fake ID and pays cash.
Joan calls her to report from her interrogation that Ivan Kravec talked.
After lunch with Auggie, Hailey asks if he knew Annie has a medical condition. He plays dumb and says hiding something like that doesn't sound like Annie. Hailey hasn't reported it to anyone yet. He asks her to check with him first if she gets evidence.
Auggie gets a call, then stops by his house. Natasha isn't there, but comes home with groceries. She's angry he was out with Hailey, even though he's explained he's doing damage control. He chides her for taking an unnecessary risk by leaving, and she tells him to try harder to keep her around. He promises he'll find a way to get her immunity, but then he has to go into work.
At Langley, they have a name of the person who paid Ivan to funnel money for the Chicago bombing: Farouq Tabrizi, head of a terror cell responsible for a bombing in Istanbul last year. They've never had an image of him, but do now. He's really Nathan Mueller, an American citizen -- who used to work for the CIA.
He was a high level operative in the Middle East for 11 years. Auggie served with him on paramilitary missions in 2005. Annie studied him at the farm. One day while working deep cover in Azerbaijan, he cut ties and dropped off the grid. "Tabrizi" has been linked to three other terror attacks.
Kravec put money on transfer cards and gave them to a Russian courier, the one Annie saw at the embassy. Flight records show he landed in Azerbaijan six hours ago.
Privately, Auggie asks Annie how well she's covered her tracks health wise. He doesn't mention Hailey's investigation.
Before Annie leaves, she learns that Ryan McQuaid will be joining her -- the CIA wants her protected. McQuaid is happy to be working with her. She assures him he has her trust on the field. He's more interested in off the field, but Annie says there's no such thing.
Qimil, Azerbaijan
Annie, McQuaid and his team pull up to the town where the courier's bus was headed. They split up to talk to the locals.
McQuaid suggests trying to buy information, but when Annie sees a tea house, she goes with the direct approach, asking if anyone has seen a Russian man in the last few hours.
She shows the wary armed men the courier's photo and then asks to speak to the their boss. Annie and McQuaid are escorted upstairs to speak with the gang boss, who readily admits he saw the Russian. He has all of his money transfer cards. He says he slit the Russian's throat, "he was asking the wrong questions. He was looking for Farouq Tabrizi -- just like you are."
The boss says the Russian was an intruder. Annie assesses the situation and says they're not there on business like the Russian, they're there to take Tabrizi down. "In that case, I won't stop you," the boss says.
He directs them to a valley where he heard Tabrizi is and offers one of his men as a guide.
Back at Langley, after a briefing, Joan's secretary tells her a Russian diplomat was arrested at the embassy with a call girl. It's Stephanie, Calder's mistress. But he tells Joan it's over.
McQuaid and his team reach the valley, but with farms all around, Annie doesn't think it looks like a good place to hide out. She remembers the gang boss not being positive about the translation of the valley, and they decide to head to the other side of some nearby mountains.
Auggie meets with his old paramilitary friend Tony at a bar, to ask him about Mueller. Tony remembers Mueller saving his life. Auggie asks why Mueller seemed "off" when he was on his last deep cover mission. Tony tells him that Mueller's wife had just left him.
Auggie calls Annie to update her. Mueller could have blamed the agency for the break-up of his marriage and he isolated himself and began to radicalize.
On the rocky hillside, McQuaid spies a scout in the distance. They take cover. Annie goes after the scout and jumps on him, tackling him from behind. She wraps around his neck and holds off his knife, managing to drive it into his stomach. She climbs off him gasping, having a heart episode.
She fumbles for her medication, but it was crushed during the fight. McQuaid helps her find one that works and injects her.
As she catches her breath, he mentions some studies he read about new treatments for her condition.
He brings up Mueller, and wonders if he strayed too far without even realizing it was too late to turn back.
Hailey calls Auggie, she knows Annie as myocarditis and is hiding it. Hailey says it's dangerous and Annie shouldn't be in the field. Auggie suggests she let it slide because Annie is working to find out who was behind the Chicago attack, just like Hailey. She agrees to hold off on sounding the alarm.
Joan stops by Calder's office to brief him, but she's surprised to find he's not there.
Instead, Calder is pulling up to the police station where he's pulled strings to get Stephanie released. He's overly magnanimous about a favor she didn't ask for and she accuses him of getting her off to help himself. Calder announces he's done with her, he's tired of waiting for the other shoe to drop. She doesn't take him seriously, but tells him not to call again and hails a cab in a huff.
Back in the hills of Azerbaijan, they spot smoke coming from over a ridge. Annie and McQuaid sneak closer and are able to identify Mueller.
At Langley, Auggie tells Joan about Mueller's breakdown a year before he left the CIA. Auggie found out that one of Mueller's former asset was the suicide bomber in one of Mueller's attacks. They think the asset turned Mueller and he was radicalized while he was in the field.
Calder rejoins them in time for Annie to call in. He has 15 to 20 men with him and heavy artillery, but they're packing up to leave.
Calder decides it's time to call in a drone strike. Even if they don't have proof he's planning anything, his past makes him an imminent threat. They agree to move forward with the strike in 30 minutes unless they hear from Annie.
Annie gets off the phone and she and McQuaid are about to move out, when they find themselves surrounded by Mueller's men. They're brought up to the encampment to talk to Mueller, with only seven minutes left before the drone strike.
Mueller arrives to talk to Annie and McQuaid.
At Langley, Auggie asks about Annie's whereabouts -- but her cell phone signal went out so they can only assume she's clear of the blast radius.
Annie tells Mueller there's a drone five minutes away, but he's more concerned with making them "confess" how the United States glorifies state-sponsored terrorism. He writes a statement for McQuaid to read.
There are 2 minutes and 38 seconds til the drone hits.
When McQuaid won't read the statement, Annie volunteers. She tells Mueller she heard from Auggie that he was a hero.
Back at Langley, Auggie asks about Annie's location again, but Calder gives the OK for the strike.
Mueller vents his rage at the CIA and the work he used to do and when Annie asks why he killed 12 CIA officers in Chicago, he pulls a knife. But McQuaid points out the drone is approaching. Mueller cuts Annie's hand binding and tells her to call Langley to call it off because his men don't deserve to die. But he refuses to surrender. Mueller's man go to look at the drone and Annie knocks Mueller over. She uses the knife to free McQuaid and his men then packs up Mueller's laptop at McQuaid knocks Mueller out.
They leave him there and run, jumping off the side of the stone structure as it hits.
Annie checks in with Auggie, telling him about the laptop, video camera and notebook she grabbed. They're taking McQuaid's jet back.
Joan goes to check on Calder, who commends her work for the past 24 hours. She tells him she could have used more help from him. "I realize you're trying to compartmentalize your life, but it's affecting your ability to do your job. And around here, that kind of thing doesn't go unnoticed," she says, then leaves.
Auggie meets Natasha at a coffee shop and she announces she's leaving. She hacked into traffic cameras outside the restaurant where he was with Hailey and saw them together. She doesn't believe it's not real. He tries to convince her to stay, but she kisses him good-bye and walks away.
Hailey sees the whole things from across the street.
McQuaid and Annie check back in with the gang boss, who thanks them and tells them they're always welcome.
McQuaid checks on Annie, who is questioning herself after hearing Mueller talks about all the bad things he did for the CIA. McQuaid makes sure Annie knows she's different than Mueller because even if she's broken, she still does the right thing, even if there's a personal cost. "No one can tell you how to feel, but I can tell you, you don't have to be alone," McQuaid says. Annie accepts his offer of a drink.
At home alone, Auggie gets a call from his conspiracy nut source Roger, who brings up Nathan Mueller and says "it's not over yet."
