Tragic Episode
claudio_carvalho3 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
When an armored car is robbed and one security guard is murdered by three thieves, the FBI assume the investigation. Patrick suspects that the robbers were helped by one employee of the bank and he is arrested and Wiley tracks his cellphone GPS. Cho goes to investigate the locations found by Wiley and Vega goes with him. When they reach a diner, Vega identifies two suspects and they shoot at them. Meanwhile the third criminal appears and shots her and she dies at the hospital. Now the FBI agents hunt the criminals helped with homicide detective Brian Portis and they are trapped in a house with two hostages. When the SWAT and the FBI agents are ready to bust the house, Patrick takes an attitude to protect Lisbon.

"Nothing Gold Can Stay" is another great episode of "The Mentalist", but tragic, with the death of Vega. Patrick Jane is affected by his feelings toward Lisbon and his attitudes to protect her are affecting his own security. Cho is also affected by the loss of Vega. My vote is nine.

Do yourself a favor and watch this episode
wolfsbrigadeur7 February 2015
I've actually never written a review before on IMDb but I feel I have to write one after watching "Nothing Gold Can Stay" yesterday.

I was hooked since season 1 of The Mentalist and I really enjoyed every single episode in the last 6 years but I have to say the last one was special.

It's rare that a show manages to invoke such feelings. The performances of Baker, Tunney, Kang etc., the script, the photography...everything was top notch. The last minutes of this episode (after the case is solved) make for an instant classic in my book. It was touching and moving in a special way. Other shows are just not able to accomplish this.

I will miss this show like hell but I agree: it's better to finish on your apex than to go on til nobody wants to see it anymore.

Just do yourself a favor and binge watch The Mentalist. Watch this episode and tell me it didn't hit home. It may not be the easiest path to end this show but it's the only satisfying and believable way. I'm looking forward to the last three episodes and I'm already sure the end will kick me in the guts...but in a good way, just like this episode. That's the best thing I can hope for with a TV show and I'm absolutely positive The Mentalist can deliver. Let me get emotional one more time by watching the characters who grew to me so much. I'm sure I won't regret it.

The new rule has been applied in a few hours...

Warning: Spoilers
Before watching this episode and being 99% sure of Vega's death, I hated this idea and tried to get rid of the thought of cruel unnecessity of her death. Deep inside I still have this feeling but it's all about human nature - we can never accept the death and it's never fair to us. This episode showed how it often happens. No one expects, no one reconciles.

I liked agent Vega very much, she was a great character. So young, enthusiastic, conscientious and brave. I loved watching this Wega/Wyga/Vylie thing and it was so cruel of writers to show how she began answering Wylie's little shy attentions and then just cut it off. She turned out to be the one who made Kimball Iceman Cho laugh and cry in one and the same episode.

I admire outstanding work of cast&crew, all this was heartbreaking, painful, heavy and realistic.

I Will Miss This Show
PartialMovieViewer5 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I am going to miss Patrick Jane when his team finally exits the flat-screen. After being turned onto this show by a fellow worker a while back, I made sure I caught up ASAP and I have been a die-hard follower ever since. Every now and then a show (any show – they all do this) will introduce a character who may not fit in with the rest of the cast. Sometimes that lousy fit may force me to start saying to myself, "They need to get rid of this person – now." And of course, I end up being completely wrong and eating my words. The successful shows will hone these 'out-of-place' characters into likable personas, making them so vital to the program (at least to me) it would be insane to kill them off. What happened this week left me feeling stunned and at a loss for words. I don't want to spoil it for those 'Jane' fans out there…but I felt really disarmed at the end of this episode. There was some really heavy drama floating around the team. A twisty-turny show like "The Mentalist" won't let the audience rest and will make one and all think. Great show – I really don't want "The Mentalist" to go away, but leaving on a high note is better than riding a stupid shark. Good job to all

I didn't understand the title, until I watched

Warning: Spoilers
Normally somewhat a light cop-drama, even when serious this program isn't the kind of show that leaves you feeling heavy. The veterans have developed an amazing rapport that pulls the others along with them and everything just works together.

This episode breaks the mold and is amazingly good. Somehow every one of the actors is on the spot and puts things in a perspective that makes it extremely personal. Truly an award-winning performance, hopefully it will be recognized officially.

I'm a fan, but this one takes it to the top. And then hits you in the gut and kicks you when you're down. I'm glad I could stop the progress and take time for a breather - several times. There are extremely few shows that have ever made me feel the sense of loss this one has. 'bye Vega. (wow! Josie :)

Warning: Spoilers
I've never been disappointed by The Mentalist, until now. It's been a brilliant show and clever tricks, amazing cast and even the characters I found annoying in the beginning grew on me.

This episode, however, was a slap in the face: everyone is profoundly affected by Vega's death. Wylie? Okay, he had a thing for her. Cho? Yeah, he was like a mentor to her and you could tell he liked her. Patrick, eh, they had a playful 'I don't know what' going ("Don't call me sir"). But Abbott and Teresa? Had Teresa and Vega ever shared a scene, just the two of them?

And from a viewer's point of view: we've known her for 11 episodes. 11!

While I liked her, that's not nearly enough time to warrant half an episode, in the show's final season, to her death and getting the culprits and her funeral.

Also, isn't her death, mainly caused by Cho and on his watch, gonna mess it up for him to take over the team when Abbott leaves for D. C?

I was very hopeful this last season was gonna be the cherry on top, the icing on the cake, because up until now it had been perfect, but after this episode I'm doubtful. I guess I'll see, three episodes to go.

Unprofessional Behavior and Wrong Procedure
julienledroit16 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A real FBI agent would have wore a bulletproof vest and would have not confronted two of the three suspects in the dinner with the third and most dangerous suspect somewhere in the back. The normal procedure is wait until the three suspects are together and then follow them with a back up to a suitable location for the confrontation.

In this episode, by acting unprofessionally, agent Cho has caused the death of agent Vega and has risked the lives of the people in the dinner. In real life, Cho would have been suspended from duty and then fired after the investigation of the shooting in the diner which led to Vega's death.

Why'd you have to do Wylie and. Ego like that?
jaccer1117 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Cmon! I understand the message they were trying to make, it you set up this episode with the feeling that every character was being fully developed and reaching the end of a good series. But, instead ended it with tragedy and left a bad taste in the mouth. I haven't seen the last two episodes left and no matter how it ends, even if Jane and Lisbon get married, it's tainted by Vega's unnecessary death and Wylie/Cho/and the rest of the teams heartbreak! Disappointing. At the beginning of the episode I was actually thinking how they should bring this show back because the characters were starting to feel developed and like family, then you killed one of them! Again, it wasn't necessary.

Huge Mistake
kols5 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Been a fan, big fan, this season and looked forward to what seemed like a very pleasant cool down to the final episode.

Now those final episodes are ruined, for me, for the simple reason that the writers decided to murder a member of the team. That's it for The Mentalist and no matter how good the remaining episodes are, they've lost me.

For the record, the sole reason I give this episode one star is the murder of Agent Vega; otherwise this episode maintains the same high quality that has marked this season.

And I can only wonder, is there some kind of virus going around this year? NCIS did the same thing in an Episode called "Check", killing off Dianne Sterling, an ex of both Gibbs and Fornell, in exactly the same way as Catlin so long ago and in an episode that for some lunatic reason resurrected the story-line leading up to Jenny's death, again so many years ago.

That original story-line made sense, then. Reprising it and adding a new vengeful character, absent from the original, 7 years latter doesn't.

Likewise, killing off Agent Vega pointlessly, especially after introducing the prospect of a budding romance between Vega and Agent Wylie early in the episode, doesn't make any sense. You just don't kill off principles for no good reason.

At best, the whole scenario reeks of audience manipulation and at worst, as it is for me, is a series killer.

P.S. Just read the three other reviews and agree with all, except for one thing: TV is fantasy, not real life despite the bond we form with the characters. 'Realistic' is not a term that has any real meaning and killing off a principal, especially one as attractive as Vega, for no good reason just doesn't make sense.

Super dramatic episode for a nothing character
realitycheck4you3 February 2021
They made this episode incredibly dramatic for a character that was only recently introduced, was extremely boring & annoying, and had a super weak relationship to the rest of the characters. Absolutely absurd. This entire season has felt like a different series - it is clearly different writers and it lost its fun, thrilling, energy. Season 7 is mostly a giant train wreck and this episode is a fantastic example of how ridiculous it crashes.

Ruined the rest of the series for me
jesperaronsson-7904921 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Killing off Vega was a completely pointless feat. The only thing it brings is to taint a potential happy ending of the rest of the series. Seriously, why not let her and Wylie play out their romance instead? Completely out of character for the series, and not enough episodes left to make a proper story arc about it. Even with all the darkness and violence, The Mentalist is a light feel-good series so why not let it end like that? This is not Game of Thrones or The Wire... If they wanted to show the grit of working in law enforcement they could have brought along a new character for an episode or two and then killed them off. I have followed this series for 6 seasons and 9 episodes. Will not be watching the last 4.
