- While Morton uncovers new information about the death of Billy Pettigrew, Hildur makes a heart-breaking discovery. Another gruesome event occurs in Fortitude.

Ronnie (Johnny Harris) and Carrie (Elizabeth Dormer-Phillips) are in a tent in the middle of nowhere. He tells her about the powerful force of glaciers. Shirley (Jessica Gunning), walking home with her shopping, sees the mammoth shed doors open, peeks in, and goes to lock it. As she leaves with a slight cough, the remains emit a crackling sound.
Henry (Michael Gambon) comes home with his shopping and Dan (Richard Dormer) is there. Dan tells him what he did to Frank (Nicholas Pinnock) because they found blood on one of Frank's shirts. Henry asks why Dan attacked Frank. Dan replies, Elena (Veronica Echegui).
Shirley (Jessica Gunning) visits Elena in her room. Elena is scrubbing the shower walls of Frank's blood. She tries to comfort Elena but Elena says Shirley doesn't know what's going on - that all this could be very bad for Frank and for Elena.
At the holding cell, Dr. Allerdyce (Phoebe Nicholls) checks on Frank. She comes out and Dan is standing around the corner, listening to the conversation. She asks him if Frank has to be handcuffed, and Dan tells her he arrested Frank on suspicion of murder, and Frank resisted arrest. She asks if Frank resisted. When Dan doesn't reply, she goes back into the cell. Frank calls Dan a f-er and says Dan attacked him. Dr. Allerdyce tells Dan to leave.
Morton (Stanley Tucci) tells Hildur (Sofie Grabol) that Frank was only reacting to Dan's blows, not resisting arrest. Hildur defends Dan, saying he was there to arrest Frank for the violent murder of Stoddart, so the overwhelming force was with good reason. Morton reminds her that Dan cannot be near any interviews with Frank as they would be deemed inadmissible. Hildur figures that Morton wants to conduct the interviews. Hildur goes down to holding, exchanges glances with Frank and leaves.
Petra explains to Dan that to figure out whose DNA is on the shirt, they will have to do a DNA comparison. Dan says he doesn't have the time to send samples to the mainland. Petra says she doesn't have the equipment or the necessary skills. She says they would need an eyebrow follicle from Stoddart.
Eric finds Trish (Chipo Chung) in the City Hall lobby. She has brought food for everyone at the police station. She says she had to do something to keep her occupied. Eric, trying to be considerate, tells her they arrested Frank because he found Frank's bloody garment. They hug. Hildur sees them.
Dan goes to the morgue and plucks eyebrows from Stoddart's body. Hildur comes in and reaches for the evidence bag. Dan refuses, but Hildur explains that because of the assault, Dan might be accused of tainting the evidence and Frank could get off. Dan hands it over.
Rattrey and Natalie are at the pub. Petra comes over and hands Natalie a fluid sample and asks if she can do a cross-check at the lab with an eyebrow follicle. Rattrey guesses the DNA comparison is for the Stoddart investigation, but Petra won't say. Rattrey reminds Petra that the lab is not accredited, that any findings would not be admissible, but Petra says they just need to know if it's a match. They'll have the results in five hours.
At home, Shirley and Markus (Darren Boyd) are preparing dinner. Her mother, Dr. Allerdyce, comes in and Markus asks her about Frank. She says she can't talk about her patients and mockingly refers him to Shirley, who is the one for gossip. Markus defends Shirley, saying Shirley only tells people what is happening in town, with no exaggeration or embellishment, and everybody trusts and loves her.
Petra watches as Natalie and Rattrey work on the PCR. Petra notices some malformed reindeer specimens in the lab and Natalie tells her the reindeer fetuses are hermaphroditic and were spontaneously aborted. They're trying to find what's causing it.
At the interview room, with Hildur present, Morton asks Frank if he is in any pain. Frank only nods slightly. He asks if he knew Stoddart. Frank says he never met him - didn't know him, never met him, never killed him. Morton asks why his t-shirt was covered in blood. Frank explains Liam was sick and had a swelling in his throat. He noticed the swelling had ruptured, so Frank carried Liam to the bathroom to wash him. The t-shirt was ruined, so he threw it in the trash bin. Jules came home and Liam seemed better. Morton says it would be unusual that after so much blood loss, that it would cease so suddenly. Frank does not answer. Morton asks why Frank left Afghanistan. Frank says he put in five years and missed his wife and son. Morton notes Frank then brought his family to Fortitude and now he and Jules are separated. Frank says that's none of his business. Morton says he sees pictures of British military and he sees mostly white faces, so he's impressed that Frank achieved the status he did in the Army. Morton notes Frank had an issue with his vision while flying a helicopter and was discharged. Morton says that must have been frustrating. Frank says it hasn't occurred since with the medication he takes. Morton notes the vision problem wasn't mentioned in his application for Fortitude Search and Rescue. Frank says there is no connection between his leaving the Army and Stoddard's murder. Morton says the test results on the shirt will either set Frank free to proceed with wrongful arrest and assault charges against Dan, or Frank will be arrested for Stoddart's murder. Hildur walks out and sees Eric in the monitor room. She asks if the search of Frank's house produced any results. He says no, and Hildur asks him to bring in Jules. Eric reminds her Jules is occupied with Liam. Eric heads out, and Hildur asks if Trish is okay. Eric says she is not; she's in pieces.
Morton and Hildur are with Jules at City Hall. Jules did not know about Liam having blood all over himself. Jules said Liam had frostbite, so they took him to the hospital. Jules said she left the house and left Frank with Liam. Morton and Hildur ask if Frank stayed with Liam. Struggling to answer, Jules finally tells them that during this time, Frank had gone out.
Back at the interview room, Morton tells Frank he lied, and instead had actually gone out to meet a woman. Dan walks into the monitor room where Eric and Ingrid (Mia Jexen) are watching. Morton asks Frank who the woman was. Frank pauses, but just then, Jules walks into the monitor room and hears Frank saying it was Elena, and they had gone to an empty building and f-ed.
Ronnie and Carrie are in their tent. Carrie wakes up to some noises outside and wakes up Ronnie. Ronnie goes to investigate. Scratching noises continue. Ronnie comes back and says it was a reindeer chewing at the guy ropes. Carrie is not happy. Ronnie assures her that if there are reindeer walking around, that means there are no bears for miles.
Dan and Jules are outside talking and drinking coffee. She says she was 17 when she had Liam, and Frank was sweet to her and convinced her to marry him and have the baby. She reminds Dan of his offer to airlift Liam if he didn't improve. Dan remembers. Jules says that's the most kind and considerate thing anyone's said to her since they got off the plane. She adds that Dan is a good man.
They see Elena coming up the street. Dan goes to tell her Morton and Hildur have some questions for her. As she enters the building, she walks past Jules. Jules lets out a big sigh and tells Dan that Elena is so beautiful.
Morton asks what Elena did at Frank's house and she said she threw a snowball at the window so Frank would come out. She says that morning, she met Jules at the café, and that Liam was very sick. Elena wanted to tell Frank that she wasn't going to see him again, but they wound up having sex. Morton asks if Elena's relationship with Dan is also sexual (Dan and Ingrid are watching in the monitor room) and Elena says she has no relationship with Dan. Hildur walks out of the interview room and goes to the monitor room. Morton confirms that Frank was arrested in Elena's room at the hotel, and that she tried to break up the fight. Morton asks if she knows why Dan was so violent; she says she doesn't know what's in Dan's mind. Morton walks out and asks Eric, who is at his desk, if Elena did not have a sexual relationship with Dan, what WAS their relationship. Eric does not answer. Morton asks for the police file they have on Elena. Eric doesn't answer but then says the file is in Dan's desk. Morton asks Eric to get it. Eric sighs, says f-you, and goes to get it.
Morton shows Elena a booking photo of her from an eight year-old case involving Ricardo Scelsi, stabbed with scissors through the right eye. Her fingerprints, and her lover's prints were on the scissors. The name on her photo is Esmerelda Sorolla. Morton says she could change her name, change where she lives, but she can't change what she did. Elena says she wouldn't change it if she could.
Markus and Shirley are in bed. He tells her how beautiful she is. Dr. Allerdyce walks past their door and does not look happy. A little later, still in the bedroom, Markus is spoon-feeding ice cream to Shirley. She says she's had enough, but he insists and continues feeding her.
In her office, Hildur reminds Dan that Elena spent seven years in prison for murder. Dan argues that the man was trying to kill her, she was being harassed, abused, and threatened, and she and her lover killed the man together. Hildur is upset Dan did not warn her. Dan argues that Elena has a new identity. Hildur reiterates that Elena is a convicted murderer, and he kept that fact from her. Hildur asks, and Dan assures her, he has no relationship with Elena.
Elena says, in prison, she met a psychiatrist who told her that every seven years, a person's atoms are completely replaced, so that means that after seven years, this person (she points at herself) is not this person (she points at her booking photo). Dan and Eric are watching from the monitor room. Morton asks if that is how she consoles herself - that she is not THAT murderer. He says she's done the same thing again - found another stooge in Frank, and together they killed Stoddart. She denies it. Morton says when he asked her about Billy Pettigrew at the café, she blushed, just as she's blushing now. Eric asks Dan why Morton is asking Elena about Billy Pettigrew. Dan comes to the realization and says, because that's why he's here.
Hildur meets with Petra, Natalie, and Rattrey. The DNA from the blood on Frank's shirt and Stoddart's eyebrow follicle match. Hildur tells Morton as they enter the police station. She insists Frank committed the murder with Elena and that they are covering for each other. Dan angrily insists there was no motive. Morton wonders if Dan knows something they don't. He thinks Dan is besotted with Elena.
Dan goes to holding and confronts Frank. Frank continues to insist he was helping Liam and thought his son was going to die. He panicked and panicked badly, but he did not kill Stoddart. Dan leaves, muttering that he knows he didn't.
Rattrey and Natalie are out walking, and he says he's feeling glethi because they could be responsible for helping catch the killer of their colleague. She invites him over to have a drink to celebrate.
Dan and Jules go to Jules and Frank's house. Dan rummages through Liam's dresser drawers. He tells Jules he believes Frank and Elena, and asks Jules what Liam was wearing when she left him that night. She says pajamas and he asks if she knows where they are. He keeps searching and finds them under the bed, behind the headboard, crusted with blood. Back at the station, Dan shows them to Morton and Hildur, and says Frank was telling the truth. Hildur concludes that Liam contracted frostbite because he had walked all the way to Stoddart's, and probably saw the murder take place. Dan and Jules go to holding and Frank remembers that Liam's bedroom window was open. Dan concludes someone had abducted Liam. Jules is about to speak to Frank, but walks away instead.
Ronnie leaves the tent in the morning and removes his glove. His hand is all bloody and he is in pain. As Carrie sleeps, Ronnie sees a large patch of fresh blood about 15 feet from the tent.
