the finale of freakshow
jackDee-5656519 January 2021
It has some redemming factors in the episode, the one thing is mixed was dandy massacre on the circus, the kills in this season were the most uncreative in the series just gunshots to the head or stabbed rather lazy, it wraps up kinda well enough to redeem the season its difficult to say really

The Curtain Call Review
nycfilmchat21 January 2015
Hey Film Yorkers!

My review will only be on this episode. The season was not that great. I loved the first couple episodes until twisty died. I think from that episode and on it was dry expect with the episodes that have great connection (If you seen this season you will understand what I mean). But they really ended this season good. It was symbolic and I found this season finale to be better than season two. Season three is a tough call. I think season three ended good but it was predicable when this season wasn't. I'm just sad this is Jessica Lange's last season. I just hope they bring somebody like Anjelica Huston. Overall this episode was personally one of my favorites from this season.

Overall Thoughts
jisselbuegos3 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The television series American Horror Story: Freak Show, the story takes place in 1952 in Jupiter, Florida. The story of one of America's last remaining freak shows at the time. Throughout the series, you will meet characters who have disabilities; to society, they are referred to as "freaks." Each episode explains how these "freaks" find themselves recruited into the circus freak show. Due to their disabilities, they have been ridiculed and outcasts since they were children. As a result, (spoiler alert) these characters are killed by Dandy Mott, one of the characters who is turned into a serial killer. Every character plays a specific role and portrays a different perspective on what it's like to be disabled in society.

In search of freaks for her unsuccessful circus Elsa Mars' finds conjoined twins Bette and Dot Tattler. After earning their trust, Elsa Mars entices them to join her troupe of freaks. This is the series' first representation of disability. Essentially, conjoined twins are two babies born physically connected to each other. Conjoined twins are extremely rare and in this case, because the show was set in the 50s the twins were looked at as different and therefore, as "freaks." The twins in the show were represented positively and negatively. On the positive side, they were shown to be" regular" people with unique personalities and behaviors; they had hopes and dreams of becoming actresses. On the other hand, from the beginning, the twins were shown as dangerous people and in a negative light as they were shown to have killed their mother. In an argument, Bette repeatedly stabs and kills her mother with a table knife, out of anger. Then Dot decides to stab her sister Bette because she felt guilty about what occurred with her mother. This gives the impression that disabled people are dangerous and can't be trusted. As disabled people are shown to be unhinged and freaks of society the show gives off this message in this series and I think the directors did a good job of showing the ugly truths that comes with society and disability; and how the only way the twins were able to move forward was by joining Elsa Mars freak show.

Another character that is significant is Jimmy Darling. He is another character that is recruited by Elsa Mars to be in the circus freak show due to his disability. Darling has ectrodactyly which is a rare genetic defect that causes missing parts of fingers in the hands. In the show, he is described as having lobster crab hands. Degrading the individual by describing their disability in this manner is extremely disrespectful. His stage name is even "Lobster Boy" which minimizes his self-identity and puts him in a box that only revolves around his disability. To appear "normal," Jimmy covered his hands; however, in order to work, he used them to have sexual encounters with women. It is shown that his character was the most "normal" of the crew and how this worked in his favor as his attractiveness when his gloves were on and his disability was hidden made him a" regular" guy.

In the series, the characters Desiree Dupree and Ethel Darling were portrayed in totally different ways. Desiree Dupree is another performer in the freak show that has three breasts. There is a sexualized and eroticized portrayal of the show. On the other hand, Ethel Darling is a bearded woman who wants to feel "normal" in society. These two women were shown in different lights of how society views women. On one hand, Desiree is still a "freak" to society because she has three breasts but on the other, she is still sexualized and wanted because a woman's body is always going to be at the judgment of society. Ethel, meanwhile, wants to be viewed as "normal" and is treated horribly just because she has a beard. For society, this makes a woman undesirable. Through the lenses of disability and society, this represents two perspectives on women.

Lastly, another important character in the series is Dandy Mott. Dandy is meant to represent an individual with a mental disorder. This character portrays disability in a negative light. His psychological and mental disorders lend a mental health perspective to the series, but the way the show turned him into a psychopathic killer, in the end, reinforces the idea that people with mental health disorders can be dangerous. It is important to keep in mind that society is influenced by what they see on TV, regardless of whether it is a fictional series. In the show, he is a narcissistic obsessed individual who loves murder and gruesome activities. As his character was presented, he revealed that he enjoyed killing small animals in his youth, possibly also playing a role in the disappearance of another boy. As a whole, Dandy's inclusion in the show illustrates how people may view individuals with mental health issues and how TV shows continue to include individuals with disabilities in negative ways as they are always villains.

An important theme of American Horror Story: Freak Show is identity. Throughout the series, we see how these individuals with disabilities are confined to be in this circus show that strips them of their identity and surrounds them with the only idea that they are "freaks". "Freaks" who only serve as entertainment. The show revolves around disabilities that are "unusual" and are unwanted to society. The characters were killed in the end without having the chance to show the world that they are more than their disability. In, Riva Lehrer, "Where All Bodies Are Exquisite, shows the perspective that matters when it comes to disability "But nothing changes a disabled person's sense of self like another disabled person." Consequently, the characters were not given the opportunity to encourage each other and to overcome their disabilities because they were presented together but separated. In addition, another author that describes why name-calling for disabilities is discouraging and strips disabled people of their identity is an Excerpt from Nancy Mairs, "On Being a Cripple" stating" "People-crippled or not-wince at the word 'cripple,' as they do not at the words 'handicapped 'disabled.' Perhaps I want them to wince," In the show, these disabled characters were viewed as freaks, and even the title is minimized. Mairs gives a good point about how even the word cripple is a derogatory term for those who are disabled such as "freaks." Overall, showing how the show revolves around these characters for being "freaks" and they were never given more than this identity.

All in all, American Horror Story: Freak Show serves as another example of how TV and society view disabled individuals. Although this is a fictional show as viewers we get to see how disabled characters are used for the sole purpose of entertainment and how they are viewed as villains and dangerous. Besides the message of the series, the series gives the world more acknowledgment and representation of disability. Overall the series is an overall 8/10 for entertainment purposes but on the view of disability 4/10.

Great Finale to a Great Season!
marknum127 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
First of all I'd like to point out that I am into the season "Freak Show" since FX aired the first episode, because of the great potential, which i have seen in nearly every main character. I did really enjoy the storyline with Twisty, who is performed perfectly by John Carroll Lynch, and I personally believe that Ryan Murphy has had a great idea killing this character so soon, inasmuch i had the chance to see how Dandy, one of the best characters in the season, becomes crazier and crazier till we see him dying in the last episode after having killed nearly every "Freak", which is a very powerful scene. Another great point of this season, including the last episode "Curtain Call" is the developing and the performance of every character, like Bette and Dot, who support each other at the end, although Dot wanted to be separated from her in the first half of the season. Besides Sarah Paulson did a great job in playing to different characters at the same time and I would be glad if she would won an Emmy for that. Jessica Lange is also one of the most important things in this entire series. Her character Elsa Mars lives through a big change, because she has had everything she ever wanted, but nevertheless she wanted more and more, till the moment she realizes her faults and decides to kill herself through Edward Mordrake( Ryan Murphy is a genius ). After her death she is reunited with her "Freaks" in a special heaven( I am not if it is a heaven ) for "Freaks", which was one of the most unexpected and great things which could have happened.

Generally many people criticize this season for the lack of horror, but I am convinced that the name "American Horror Story" can also include the real life horror in our society, which I have seen for example in the episode "Orphans" , where Naomi Grossman and Jessica Lange do one of the greatest performances in television.

I personally believe that this is the best season so far( I love the other seasons too ), because "Freak Show" includes Drama, Real Life Horror, a great storyline, awesome performances and characters and a Great Finale to a Great Season!

Ahs freak show
MomentIMDB28 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Freak show is very good and iconic with great characters and plots, which made for an enjoyable and grotesque season. The whole season has an incredible aesthetic, especially the work given in the setting of the 50s and the freak show itself, the direction is brutal and accompanies the aesthetics of the season, in addition to the excellent photography. As characters and performances it is excellent, and iconic with characters such as Elsa Mars, Twisty, Bette and Dot, Jimmy Darling, dandy mott, Stanley and the freaks who did a great job, and somewhat noteworthy are the Siamese women, due to the work it took bring them to the screen, as a CGI, and the make-up artist and phenomenal performance of Sarah Paulson. The season has good writing, horror, good narrative and great character development, and although it is a very good and solid season, there is some decline between episodes 5 and 9, where the plot drops and there are things that do not work very well. Although it is not without good things, but after 4 excellent episodes, the plot is not so solid and spectacular. The best of the season is the plot of Twisty, the character of Dandy Mott and his evolution, the plot of Stanley killing freaks, the legend of Edward Mordrake, the plot of Elsa Mars and others that make this season stand out and become very good and entertaining. Without a doubt the crossover with Asylum is incredible and I loved it, giving great development to pepper. The best episode of the season is episode 10 orphans that has the great crossover and the one I liked the least is episode 6 bullseye. The end of the season as in coven, fails to close the plots satisfactorily and to everyone's liking, and although there are good things, others fail and the potential he had built does not exploit. Jessica lange's departure impacts everyone, since she is the icon of the series, but I respect the actress's decision and I liked how they handled her departure. My rating for the season is 9 of 10

S4.E13 - Good Episode to End a Good Season [9/10]
panagiotis199317 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(S4. E13) My Live Reaction / Review for American Horror Story Season 4 Episode 13 ''Curtain Call''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Dandy is killing the ''freaks''? What the hell, he is losing it. What a brutal way to end this season. Dandy really knows how to shoot. Get him Amazon Eve, get him! Oh no, she is gone too. Dandy married the twins? What the hell? I guess they don't know that he killed all the ''freaks''? It was a trap?! Damn. Now its time for the ''freaks'' to have their revenge, sweet. Finally, Dandy gets what he deserves. Elsa is now famous? Good for her I guess, that's what she wanted. Massimo is sick? That sucks. The twins are pregnant with Jimmy's child? Wow, I didn't see that coming. Is this another realm? All the ''freaks'' are alive. Overall this was a really good episode to end a fantastic season. My rating is 9/10.

"I Hate you".
MattBrady09929 January 2015
Dandy: "I hate you, I hate you, I hate you, I hate you".

Cleaning made: "I hate you too boy".

American Horror Story for my point of view isn't just a show with loud jumps scars or cliché characters, no it's a TV show that only shows graphic stories that always end up having a good ending or a bad ending to those in the show, and it sometimes always end up bad for them.

A quick review to all the 1-3 season until I talk about Freak Show, just to get my thoughts on the previous seasons: AHS season one in my opinion started off okay, I'm not saying it's bad, just okay. But season two is when it picked up for me. Season Three was good, but not has good has season 2, but still overall good. Now for Freak Show and I got to say it's far far better then season one and season 3.

What I liked so much about Freak Show was how the show dives in into that gritty, dirty and uneasy feel to it that the 1932 film Freaks (Which is what the show is borrowing) never had. Just add in a Patrick Bateman look a like and add in a terrifying looking clown and you totally get a true horror story.

Jessica Lange is probably the best actress working today and she fit's right in this show, basically shes like a queen of this TV show, because she can pretty much play any role and nail it and here she dose once again. The character that she plays Elsa Mars is kind of a mix bag for me. One minute I feel sorry for her and the next minute I hate her for her actions in the show. Has I said before mix bag character, but Jessica Lange played the character well, I got all the torment, the hard work of trying to get her fame and yeah she can by selfish at times trying to get that fame but it shows how she really wants to be loved by people around the world and it only took about loads of deaths to do that.

The rest of the cast all did good and Finn Wittrock who played Dandy is a true rising star, because he played such a good copy and paste Patrick Bateman in this and he did great.

For problems I have I only had some like: Neil Patrick Harries character started off great and I like the fact that his deeply crazy with his Chucky like doll and I wanted to see what will happen to his character but the way the show left his character felt like a cop out and a huge disappointment.

The final episode of Freak Show didn't really end very well just like Coven. It's not the worst finale like Dexter or True Blood but it did left me a bit disappointed that the fact the show had to end like that.

Overall Freak Show is a solid season for me. It may have it's ups and downs between episodes and that, but beside that AHS fans have a lot to like with this and coming from guy who isn't a huge fan of the show, I enjoyed it.

Great until the last episode
elisonbailey315 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of my favorite Horror series, but 12 shots from a 6 shot revolver...REALLY? I really enjoy the story line, the creepy atmosphere, the actors, the freaks, etc. Then out of nowhere it all falls short of being another great season. Why is it that Hollywood always have to insult us with the portrayal of fire arms never running out of ammo? I was really enjoying how great this season was compared to last season, and i'm really not trying to give away too much of the plot. I just don't like it when a movie or series starts off great then gets lazy in the end. Maybe i'm making too much out of a small thing, but i wish that film makers would stop it with the endless bullets in shoot outs.

A fair review
djurog9 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This season had some really cool aspects, and some very entertaining characters. But the biggest problem with it, was the amount of useless characters around. Too many people, and very little time to invest in each one. Which made for a very flat and convoluted season. Dandy has been one of the best characters this season, and Finn Wittrock plays him amazingly, you can tell he has fun with this character. Which makes Curtain Call, that much more disappointing. The final rampage of him killing all the remaining characters you care about, felt lazy and meaningless. Paul, his girlfriend and Eve, specially, they were very likable, more likable than some of the bigger named actors on the show. And in a heartbeat, they are all dead. What is most frustrating, is the fact that they tried to do what they did for season 1 (If you haven't seen season 1, there will be spoilers here, you have been warned) The finale of 1 was very satisfying, because every single character dies, and we think all is lost. But then we see the happy ghost family in the house, and they are much happier now, than they were while living. So back to Curtain Call, now we do the same format, where they kill everyone, and show us they are in a happy place in the afterlife. That's lazy, they have done this already. Now Dandy gets taken by the freaks, and gets what he deserves. Again, the execution of his death scene, felt flat to me, but that's officially nitpicking. Now Elsa. The final scenes with Elsa were painfully boring. When I get to the point where all I want is for this episode to end, something has gone wrong. The problem with her story conclusion, was mostly because they started a new storyline at the middle of the last episode, when at this point, there should be a climax and a conclusion. But we are introduced to new characters and story lines that quickly dissolve to just give Elsa an undeserved happy ending. They should have used Chester for this finale, giving the fact that he was introduced only 2 episodes prior, and vanished. He could have made the ending a little more interesting, now that Dandy, Twisty and pretty much the whole cast is dead. Even Edward Mordrake could have appeared in a more interesting, or scary way. But maybe that's asking too much. In conclusion, this is one of my least favorite episodes of the entire series so far. I love seasons 1 and 2. (For the most part) And this season had a lot of potential, but ultimately felt convoluted, flat and without a driven plot. But Finn Witrock and Neil Patrick Harris owned the screen, along with Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson and of course, Jessica Lange.

when connecting the dots the wrong way...
roni_saint24 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
i gotta say that this season overall was my last favorite one, but even so this is AHS season finally episode so i was, like always, expecting to see some good closure at the end, i must say seeing dandy killing all the freaks was not the creativity i'm used to get from the writers of the show, i think that's got to do with the lack of good Character building over the season. one thing i hate the most is when u think a Character is dead and after some time it appears that the character is alive and there's nothing to it, no meaning , what happened to meap? in the last episode he was alive and at the finely they didn't talk about him for one second??? i thought jimmy didn't like the twins, so what? now he must be with them because the show is over? all this time in Hollywood and Elsa didn't now that all the freaks where massacred ? she didn't heard about it? why she was so shocked? i mean this kind of stuff i would expect to see in Smallville or sleepy hollow but not in AHS witch is a top show for me (until this season' AHS was the best show after breaking bad and game of thrones or other great show that i like),

so this epi was pretty bad, and i am not expecting the next season to be that good, looks like ryan murphy is out of idea.

A most unsatisfying ending
msmithmob13 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There were a few things that have bugged me about this season, there was clearly effort put in to making Dot and Bet look like real siamese twins but then they didn't bother even trying to make Elsa's legs look fake unless the camera was pointed directly at them. For example when Elsa gets to Hollywood and sits waiting in reception all day in a skirt that stops above the knee and she clearly has real legs, it would have been so easy to make them look like prosthetics, or simply cover them up. They made a point of showing her strapping her legs on several times in previous episodes and then we see her legs with no straps. Very poor.

Then during Dandy's rampage he fires thirteen rounds from a 6 shot revolver without reloading. He also manages to kill four of them before anyone hears a gunshot, they could have had some of the carnival rides going with the music to cover the sound, but no. Everyone should have heard the first shot and jumped him but the plot says no.

The most unsatisfying part for me though was the end. After everything she did, Elsa gets to choose her own end, she goes out on Halloween and calls Edward Mordrake who had previously refused to take her and yet for some reason, this time he does. Then she gets to be the star of the show in the afterlife.
