For a music journalist in the Nineties, there could have been no better phone call. Not long after Michael Azerrad hung out with Kurt Cobain for Nirvana’s first Rolling Stone cover story, Courtney Love reached out to ask him if he wanted to write a book about Nirvana. He agreed, and after nine months of breakneck work, he managed to get Come As You Are out in 1993, just in time to coincide with Nirvana’s Nevermind follow-up, In Utero.

A new deluxe reissue of Nirvana’s In Utero, is out today (October 27th) to coincide with the album’s 30th anniversary.
The original In Utero arrived after Nirvana had already become global superstars, and is thematically characterized by the band’s discomfort with their status, particularly from frontman, Kurt Cobain. Celebrating it on the occasion of its 25th anniversary in 2018, Consequence contributor Ryan Bray praised the album as “arguably the truest representation of what Nirvana was: a massive act with the principles and integrity of one half its size… It’s a difficult but ironclad document of artistic bravery.”
Now, the album is being honored in a whole new fashion. Among the 53 unreleased tracks are two full In Utero-era concerts, including the band’s final performance in Seattle, as well as six bonus live tracks recorded at various shows around the same time. Additionally, the album’s original tracklist,...

Nirvana’s third and final album, In Utero, celebrated its 30th anniversary last month. To mark the occasion, surviving band members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, along with In Utero producer Steve Albini, sat down with Conan O’Brien for an hour-long conversation on his Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast.
The trio spoke at length about the In Utero recording process and comparisons to Nevermind; how they killed time in the studio by prank calling Gene Simmons, Evan Dando, and Eddie Vedder; the record label’s reaction to In Utero; and the depths of Kurt Cobain’s lyricism. For Nirvana geeks, the conversation won’t provide much in the way of new revelations, but it’s still a thrill hearing the three guys back in the same room together.

Aside from the frequency with which contemporaneous news footage reporting on Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994 still pops up in documentaries about the era, In Utero’s place in both the Nirvana and rock canon might be the clearest expression of how much the singer’s death still reverberates today. But the popular interpretations of the album as a quasi-suicide note not only miss its emotional breadth and sly humor—regularly understated when discussing Cobain as a lyricist—but also what it represented 30 years ago: With In Utero, Nirvana showed that something akin to “success on your own terms” was indeed possible.
Even being the biggest band on the planet in 1993 didn’t insulate Nirvana from having to put up with rumors about squabbling between the group and Geffen Records over whether the album was unlistenable. Despite claims from producer Steve Albini, both the band and David Geffen publicly denied...

Surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic are set to appear on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast next week in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the band’s final album, In Utero. Update: Listen to the full episode here. In an advance clip premiered at Billboard, Grohl and Novoselic (along with In Utero producer/engineer Steve Albini) chatted with O’Brien about the band’s dizzying rise following the release of their second studio album, Nevermind, in 1991.
O’Brien began the conversation by recalling how there was just a three-day window between the September 1993 release of In Utero and the debut of his show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien. “I remembered the music on the album — because I was such a huge fan — being background music to the terror and the weirdness of me starting a late night show from complete obscurity in 1993,” he said.

Soon after Michael Azerrad first published the touchstone Nirvana biography Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana in 1993, his subject’s future was cut much too short. Now, in honor of its 30th anniversary, Azerrad is bringing the book up to date with The Amplified Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana, a “super-expanded” version that’s out October 24th.
Come As You Are was already celebrated upon its release, written in close collaboration with Nirvana and even co-signed by Kurt Cobain as “the best rock book [he’d] ever read.” But just seven months after the biography was published, Cobain died by suicide, completely re-contextualizing the stories Azerrad had just told — and designating Come As You Are as the only book about Nirvana to ever feature original interviews with all three band members.

Legendary recording engineer and producer Steve Albini has opened up about the historic recording sessions with Nirvana that produced the band’s final album In Utero. Speaking with NME, Albini revealed the lengths he and the band went to in order to keep the recording sessions secret.
“I had to do everything I could to keep it under wraps to make sure that we didn’t get overrun by fans and the added nonsense,” Albini said. This included booking the studio in a remote location under a pseudonym inspired by the Sex Pistols.
It was 1993, and Nirvana had become global superstars due to the success of 1991’s Nevermind. Albini — who had already built up a reputation for himself as an engineer and member of the punk rock outfit Big Black — had never met the band prior to their working together, but knew that he would need to find a secluded...

We've seen it happen in every single Alien movie, a Xenomorph (or something similar) bursting its way out of its human host. Now ahead of the release of Alien: Covenant, we're the chance to see things from the aliens perspective. Alien: Covenant In Utero is a 360-degree Vr experience and 20th Century Fox describes it:
"A journey into a living nightmare and offers a terrifyingly close and personal encounter as an alien neomorph at the time of its birth. Fans will be able to experience the world around them, reliving the very first memories of the neomorph in an immersive environment."
I bet this is pretty amazing in Vr, but the great thing is you don't need a Vr headset to enjoy it. They have uploaded the 360-degree video to Youtube and their facebook page. I just pulled it up fullscreen on my laptop and used my mouse to look around.

The problem with all Alien movies, of course, is their xenophobic world view, when it comes to xenomorphs. Why doesn't anyone try to see things from the aliens' point of view? Well, a new virtual promotion for this month's Alien: Covenant asks audiences to do just that.
Initially unveiled in select Regal theaters last week, 20th Century Fox has unveiled the video for its Alien: Covenant In Utero virtual reality experience online, and it's exactly what the name suggests: a chance to experience what a baby xenomorph does, right before its birth. Well, beyond the likely desire to kill...

Find out what happened after the events of Prometheus with this astonishing Alien: Covenant Prologue
Author: Jon Lyus
We’re a few short weeks away from our return to the world of xenomorphs, Engineers and origin of all life, alien or otherwise. Alien: Covenant is the second prequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 horror classic, and follows on from the harrowing events of 2012’s Prometheus. This new prologue bridges the two films, providing an answer to the question of what happened to Noomi Rapace’s Dr. Elizabeth Shaw and Michael Fassbender’s David.
As Ridley Scott himself explains this scene picks up the story after Prometheus survivors Shaw and the badly damaged android have escaped on the crashed Engineer spaceship. Shaw nurses (solders) David back to health and together they explore the ship, and settle on a course to the alien beings’ homeworld in a scene that looks utterly spectacular.

Even among discriminating Cr readers, there is No doubt that Alien, Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi masterpiece is truly terrifying. Jump forward to 2017: technology is light years ahead and the world is counting down towards Scott’s latest directing effort, Alien: Covenant. One of the many new technologies to emerge in the 38 years since the franchise chest-burst onto the scene is Virtual Reality. Vr vastly expands the experience of a visual work by immersing the viewer in it. Like feature films a century ago, Vr content is starting out as short films, being consumed by a growing audience. 20th Century Fox is celebrating Alien Day with the release of “The Crossing,” a two-minute-forty-second official prologue to “Alien: Covenant’ that finds Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and David (Michael Fassbender) attempting to finish the mission they started in “Prometheus.” The 2009 film ended with the pair taking flight in an Engineer’s space ship in order to locate their home planet and learn why they intended to destroy humanity. We never got to see that mission, until now.

Have you ever dreamed of experiencing life as a horrifying creature from the Alien franchise, instead of just watching one destroy a bunch of space travelers? Well, now you can. For Alien Day, 20th Century Fox is launching a virtual reality experience available on Oculus called Alien: Covenant In Utero that puts you in the slimy skin of a neomorph, the breed in the new movie. (You can catch a glimpse of the awful-looking thing in one of the recently released images from the film.) According to the website, In Utero is “a 360-degree virtual reality journey into a living nightmare and offers a terrifyingly close and personal encounter as an alien neomorph at the time of its birth.” You’ll be “reliving the very first memories of the neomorph in an immersive environment,” meaning at least you won’t be the one running in fear.
