Impressed by his work on Cop Car, Marvel brought Jon Watts to helm Spider-Man: Homecoming, starring Tom Holland. Following its success, the director was brought back to craft the next two sequels in the franchise with a much bigger scope than the first one, which was fairly a street-level film. But being a street-level film was one of Homecoming‘s biggest charms, as it helped the movie differentiate itself from other MCU IPs, and Marvel is reportedly looking to go that route again.
However, per reports, Sony was against this idea and wanted the fourth part to follow in No Way Home‘s footsteps by bringing Watts back, but it appears, it isn’t going in Sony’s favor this time.

Marvel and Sony are butting heads on the upcoming Spider-Man 4 movie and it’s not at all good news for fans of Tom Holland’s web-slinger. Kevin Feige-led Marvel and Tom Rothman-led Sony are divided on the creative direction, the release date, and the director of the movie. Both Marvel fans and Feige do not want the Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts to direct the next film and they have a clear reason why.
Marvel fans do not want Spider-Man: No Way Home director returning for Spider-Man 4
Marvel Studios is considering Netflix’s Daredevil creator Drew Goddard to direct Spider-Man 4. The studio also does not want the film to be released next year alongside plenty of other planned MCU movies, which is something Sony reportedly opposes.

Director Jon Watts helmed all three films in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy of films set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Aside from the overall positive reception of the films, Watts’ direction and handling of Peter Parker’s integration into the MCU was also praised. However, the films recorded an unprecedented amount of commercial success.

Following on from word that Everything Everywhere directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert handled an episode of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, we know now via One Take News that The Green Knight's David is directing another.
It sounds like co-creator Jon Watts – he worked with his Spider-Man: Homecoming and Cop Car collaborator Christopher Ford along with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni – has assembled quite the fascinating list of filmmakers for this one.
Set in the same timeline as The Mandalorian and its associated series, Skeleton Crew focuses on a group of kids who are about ten years old who get lost in the Star Wars universe.
Jude Law is starring in the show – which marks another time working with Lowery, since he's playing Captain Hook in the director's latest live-action Disney update, Peter Pan & Wendy, which will be on Disney+ on 28 April.

The Sundance Film Festival is celebrated as America’s premiere showcase for independent film and a launchpad for up-and-coming filmmakers making deeply personal movies, often on shoestring budgets. But the storied festival is also becoming known for something else: a pipeline for talent into some of Marvel’s biggest superhero films.
From Chloe Zhao (“Eternals”) to Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok”), Disney’s Marvel Studios has tapped Sundance talent with notable regularity.
A top dealmaker gave a brutally honest reason for what has become a pattern:
“It’s because they’re young, cheap, and will follow Feige’s rules,” the dealmaker said, referring to Marvel Studios president and keeper of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kevin Feige.
How the annual Park City, Utah gathering has evolved into minor league farm system for Marvel is a phenomenon that tracks with the MCU’s ambitious slate, which constantly demands new ideas and talent. If...

If you frequent social media sites, you've likely seen a bit of backlash against the juggernaut that is the MCU. It seems like there is always another film or Disney+ series on the horizon. At San Diego Comic-Con in July, we learned about Marvel's massive Phase 5 and 6 slate through 2025. There are fans and naysayers alike that are beginning to feel like the studio has become a content factory. With everything interconnected in the MCU and big effects-heavy battle scenes sort of a must for each story, it's no wonder that some content creators are looking for a break.
That includes director Jon Watts, who took the helm for "Spider-Man: Homecoming," "Spider-Man: Far From Home," and the most recent entry for everyone's favorite web-slinger, "Spider-Man: No Way Home." Watts was originally set to direct the upcoming MCU film "Fantastic Four," but as of April 2022, he had left the project. At the time,...

How do you follow up on making the highest-grossing movie of 2021, and one of the most popular movies of all time? If you’re Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts, you go to work on Star Wars. After helming all three of Peter Parker’s first adventures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Watts planned to bring the Fantastic Four to the screen. However, late last month Watts revealed that he was leaving the Fantastic Four film to focus on a secret Star Wars project, which had the codename “Grammar Rodeo.”
Thanks to the Lucasfilm panel at Star Wars Celebration, we now know that “Grammar Rodeo” is in fact a Disney+ series entitled Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. Even better, we know that it will star Jude Law, who had long been rumored to be involved in a Star Wars project.

Exclusive: Jon Watts has withdrawn as the director of Fantastic Four, the reinvention of the venerable Marvel Comics series at Marvel Studios and Disney. Watts just directed Spider-Man: No Way Home, the Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios film that grossed 1.89 billion to become the sixth highest grossing film of all-time. Nothing sinister here; Watts just needs a break from the superhero realm after completing the Spidey trilogy with Tom Holland and Zendaya. He had expected to make Fantastic Four his next film, the third feature iteration of that franchise and first since Disney acquired Fox, which controlled the franchise. Watts has spent the better part of the last decade directing and promoting the Spider-Man films, after being hired off Cop Car, a small budget indie thriller that premiered at 2015 Sundance. He needs a breather.

For all the existential questions surrounding film festivals (some of which this column explored last week), few would deny their potential for discovering new talent. Similarly, it has become too easy to envision how breakthrough filmmakers can be gobbled by the system. Sundance is America’s greatest discovery festival — but who’s doing the discovering, and to what end?
In recent years, Sundance programming has bred directors of future blockbusters. For many newcomers, that lure is too good to ignore. But any of them contemplating these offers should think twice: Originality can be bankable on its own, and the period after a Sundance debuts is a unique window to capitalize on that opportunity.
Of course, it’s a tricky calculus. The chance to direct a franchise means a built-in global audience at a time when it’s increasingly difficult to guarantee any theatrical viewership. Studio paydays aside, Sundance breakouts could...

At the beginning of Spider-Man: No Way Home — at least at the packed press screening I attended today — the three stars of the movie, as well as returning villain Jamie Foxx urged the audience to keep any spoilers to themselves and not spill the beans on any of surprises, and there are Alot of them. Such revelations would be terribly unfair to moviegoers, Marvel fans, and especially fans of this series, which has been going strong in various iterations for decades now.
This film is supposedly the culmination of the whole series, especially the arc that takes us back to the teenaged Spidey in the form of Tom Holland. He lends a fresh-faced appeal and real style to the role previously played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
It would be critical malpractice to give anything away other than basic plot points. Given that, here we go: For the first...

“The Crown” star and recent Emmy winner Josh O’Connor and “Normal People” BAFTA winner Paul Mescal will star in gay romance “The History of Sound,” an Oliver Hermanus-directed adaptation of an award-winning short story.

Hollywood studios have shown an affinity for pulling red hot indie filmmakers out of the low-budget space and into the director’s chair for big-budget tentpoles. Such a career trajectory could have been in the cards for Lee Daniels, who revealed to Collider that he pitched a Wolverine movie to 20th Century Fox at the request of Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman. It turns out Jackman was a huge fan of “Precious,” Daniels’ 2009 indie sensation that won Mo’Nique the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
“A lot of actors call me. I remember after I did ‘Precious,’ Hugh Jackman called and wanted me to do a Wolverine,” Daniels said. “And he sent me into the studio to Fox, I guess that’s where they do them at. And I had never done a studio film before and it was a disaster.”
Daniels continued, “I literally pulled over…Yeah, it was at Fox...

As always, actors make up the largest branch of the Academy, but many new members (49 percent) also come from overseas.

Upcoming horror movie The Turning may take place in the Nineties, but you’re not going to hear “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on the soundtrack.
Instead, director Floria Sigismondi teamed up with producer-musicians Lawrence Rothman and Yves Rothman to create a whole new aural environment for the movie, which is a retelling of Henry James’ 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw. They enlisted a cadre of musicians — from Courtney Love to Soccer Mommy — to write their own versions of Nineties music.

Mitski has unveiled a brooding new rocker, “Cop Car,” that will appear on the upcoming soundtrack for The Turning. The film and soundtrack will both arrive January 24th.
The Turning is a contemporary update of Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, about two kids in an old mansion that seems to grow haunted upon the arrival of a woman named, Kate. Director Floria Sigismondi chose to recast the story in the Nineties and pair the film with an era-appropriate soundtrack. While the film will feature music from some Nineties...

Exclusive: With Sony and Disney/Marvel having agreed to co-financing terms on the third Spider-Man Homecoming movie Friday, it should come as no surprise to hear that Jon Watts is in talks to return to the $2 billion-grossing franchise he directed. This is great news for fans of the series as it means continuity.
The hope we hear from sources is that Watts’ deal will be wrapped soon. Essentially, Sony and Disney/Marvel sought to hammer out their co-financing agreement on the third Spidey pic first, before turning their attention to re-upping Watts.
At the time the Sony-Disney battle went down last month, Watts didn’t have a deal for the next Spider-Man picture and he wasn’t a lock to return.
Kevin Feige has a knack for choosing innovative voices in independent cinema to steer his Marvel movies. Watts was chosen off his 2015 Kevin Bacon movie Cop Car which made...

‘Spider-Man’ Director Jon Watts & Actor John Lithgow Join Jeff Bridges In New FX Pilot ‘The Old Man’
When you read the name Jon Watts in a headline lately, it normally is something to do with the filmmaker’s unenviable position as the filmmaker in the middle of the Disney/Sony Spider-Man rights situation. But hey, this time, Watts is in the news and it’s not superhero-related at all. In fact, this new project might be the most interesting thing he’s signed on for since “Cop Car.”
According to FX, Watts has signed on to helm the pilot episode of the upcoming series “The Old Man,” starring Jeff Bridges.

John Lithgow has joined the cast of the upcoming FX drama pilot “Old Man” alongside previously announced lead Jeff Bridges, Variety has learned. In addition, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Spider-Man: Far from Home” director Jon Watts has come onboard to direct the pilot and executive produce the series.
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Thomas Perry, the series centers on Dan Chase (Bridges), who absconded from the CIA decades ago and has been living off the grid since. When an assassin arrives and tries to take Chase out, the old operative learns that to ensure his future he now must reconcile his past.
Lithgow will play Harold Harper. Described as intelligent and tough with deep reservoirs of compassion and ruthlessness, Harper is called back to service by the FBI after suffering a terrible personal loss. He has a complicated past with rogue fugitive Chase, which makes him...

Exclusive: As the dust settles on the Disney/Marvel and Kevin Feige exit from the Sony’s Spider-Man franchise, the next looming tug of war might well be over director Jon Watts, who catapulted from the small-budget Sundance film Cop Car to the A-list helmer of the $880 million-grosser Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which just surpassed the 007 film Skyfall to become Sony’s highest-grossing film at $1.11 billion.
I’m told that Watts was only bound to the Spidey franchise as director for those two pictures and that it’s no certainty he will be back to direct Tom Holland in the third installment being written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. They wrote the record breaker Spider-Man: Far From Home.
I’m told he’s being courted by Marvel. It is understandable that Marvel and Feige would want to keep things going with Watts: Feige has a strong...

Jon Watts is two for two with his ‘Spider-Man’ films. The young director, who’s previously best-known work was the indie thriller “Cop Car,” has proven over the course of two superhero films (‘Homecoming‘ and ‘Far From Home‘) that he’s the real deal. So, if the director has an idea for the villain of the next ‘Spider-Man’ film, everyone really should just get out of his way.

Director Jon Watts says that following up Avengers: Endgame was the biggest task for Spider-Man: Far From Home.
In Spider-Man: Far From Home, a grief-stricken Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is still reeling from being Snapped out of existence for five years by Thanos and losing Tony Stark in the final battle against the Mad Titan. He figures the best thing would be to get away from it all, including his Spider-Man persona, on a school trip to Europe -- until he gets a call from Nick Fury (Samuel L. Following the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, as well as this Spider-Man’s first standalone Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home successfully manages to plumb the depths of Peter’s sadness and conflict while maintaining the fizzy,...

Netflix has released their list of new titles coming in the month of June, as well as a last call for everything getting ready to leave the streaming service.
Highlights arriving this month include the fifth season of Netflix’s popular psychological thriller series “Black Mirror,” coming June 5, and Hilary Swank’s thriller “I Am Mother, coming June 7. And whether or not you were alive in 1993 when the original TV mini-series “Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City” came out, you can still appreciate the remake starring Ellen Page as Laura Linney’s on-screen daughter when it arrives June 7.
This month is the last chance to watch what is arguably the best moon mission movie, “Apollo 13,” starring the ultimate dream team, Tom Hanks and Gary Sinise. Other classics getting the boot include “Legally Blonde” and its sequel “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde,” along with “Friday the 13th” and “Pretty in Pink.

Disney and Marvel Studios have debuted the official trailer for “Spider Man: Far From Home,” and with it comes a huge spoiler warning for “Avengers: Endgame.” The latter is breaking box office records left and right since debuting in theaters April 26. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said “Spider Man: Far From Home” is the true ending to the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the trailer makes this clear as it finds Peter Parker processing the tragedy of “Endgame” and the loss of one of the McU’s most iconic superheroes.
“Spider-Man: Far From Home” follows Peter Parker/Spider-Man on a summer vacation to Europe with his friends. Complicating matters for the grieving Peter is that his return in “Endgame” meant he missed out on the last five years of his life. Returning from “Homecoming” are Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Zendaya as Michelle (revealed at the...

Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” opened to Thursday-preview grosses of $20.7 million. That’s only slightly below last year’s “Black Panther,” which opened one hour later. For co-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, that figure nearly doubles the total gross of the four indies they made before Marvel came calling..
This is a film that has even rival studios rooting for its success. Something has to stop the box-office slide of 2019; movie ticket sales are down are a catastrophic 30 percent so far. One reason for the falloff is by this time last year we had “Black Panther,” 2018’s biggest domestic grosser (and second largest opener to Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War”).
Whatever your feelings on the comic-book takeover of Hollywood, their success is vital for the struggling theater business. And as Marvel maintains its dominance In that world, they look to indie filmmakers to guide them.

Peter Parker lives! At least he’s alive and well in the first trailer for Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” The McU Spider-Man, first played by Tom Holland in 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” vanished into thin air during the climax of “Avengers: Infinity War” following Thanos’ population-destroying snap. Many fans have been left wondering how Peter returns, and while we don’t have that answer yet, we do have some great new footage.

The Sundance Film Festival has gone through many changes in its 35 years, evolving from Robert Redford’s experimental incubator for independent filmmaking to the most influential festival event in the country. The 2019 edition is no exception: With Kim Yutani taking over as director of programming following the departure of longtime programming head Trevor Groth, much of the independent film community expects a lineup that reflects the shift in vision. Of course, Yutani still reports to Sundance veteran John Cooper, the festival’s director, and some Sundance movies will always be safe bets.
IndieWire’s annual Sundance wish list reflects much of the intel making the rounds, as well as some educated guesswork, based on various projects that have been submitted or seem likely to submit ahead of the festival’s deadlines. “Overlord” is one of the best video game movies ever made, and it’s not even based on a video game.
Filmmakers have been struggling for decades to adapt an actual video game story into a great movie, but many films have already successfully adapted the storytelling style of video games to the big screen. Take a look at the checkpoint gameplay mechanics of “Run Lola Run,” and the point-and-click problem solving of “Cop Car.” Consider the daredevil side scrolling of “District B13,” and the destructive fighting-game avatars of “Colossal.”
And now, check out “Overlord,” the ultimate Nazi zombie movie. The genre goes back at least as far as Ken Wiederhorn’s “Shock Waves,” which starred Peter Cushing as a mad scientist building an undead reich on an uncharted island, but it really came to life (pun intended) in video games. By the time the “Wolfenstein” games introduced Mecha-Hitler as a level boss,...

There’s nary a drop of blood, but a squirm factor of 10 to much of “The Clovehitch Killer.” This first theatrical feature for director Duncan Skiles, working from a strong screenplay by his past collaborator Christopher Ford, treads familiar ground in eking suspense from the viewpoint of a child who realizes a parent may have a sinister secret life. But this atypical serial-killer thriller distinguishes itself in resisting thrills — let alone any actual violence — till well past its halfway point, instead maximizing the quiet discomfort in a son’s rising suspicion that his outwardly Dagwood-type dad could be a notorious murderer. IFC Midnight plans simultaneous limited-theatrical and digital-formats release of the La Film Festival-premiered film on Nov. 18.
Skiles, Dp Luke McCoubrey, and the visual design contributors lend a vaguely ’70s aura to the goings-on, though the time appears to be “now.” This underlines a sense that the community in question,...

What’s the one thing Taika Waititi, Ryan Coogler and Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Jon Watts have in common? You know, aside from being wonderfully talented directors who have now helmed one Marvel movie each…
You guessed it: Prior to their initial foray into the McU, Waititi, Coogler, and Watts were known for micro-budget indies like What We Do in the Shadows, Fruitvale Station and, in the case of Watts, Cop Car, the white-knuckle ride starring Kevin Bacon of Tremors fame.
So it’s fair to say that Kevin Feige and the Powers That Be over at Marvel rolled the dice when hiring Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) and Jon Watts (Homecoming), though the sheer success of each movie proves that Feige’s decision was more of a calculated gamble, as he’s a big believer in welcoming indie directors onto the big stage. At first, it felt like a fluke: Filmmakers working outside the studio system, telling original stories made on their own terms, lured into the superhero arena where final cut doesn’t exist. In the modern era, it began with Marc Webb, snatched up by Sony to direct “The Amazing Spider-Man” and its sequel after his Sundance breakout “(500) Days of Summer.” Within a couple of years, filmmakers ranging from James Gunn (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) to Patty Jenkins (“Wonder Woman”) to Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok”) catapulted beyond personal cinematic pursuits to lend their talents to the comic book craze.
That approach yielded mixed results for the “Star Wars” universe, which reportedly took “Rogue One” away from director Gareth Edwards and fired original “Solo” directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, but the phenomenal popularity of “Black Panther” elevated yet another Sundance discovery, 31-year-old Ryan Coogler, to Spielbergian heights. Obviously, “Homecoming” has multiple meanings, not least of which is Spider-Man’s switch to the cool side of the Marvel fence, outside of Sony’s control. Makes sense. One could argue that the very DNA of the modern Marvel movie machine is based on what made Sam Raimi’s first two movies so successful: larger-than-life characters tackling real-world themes, with a lightness of touch that didn’t undermine the gravity of the drama. It’s a difficult balancing act; one which Marc Webb’s aborted reboot largely failed to replicate.

In the music industry, it's hard to find somebody like Keith Urban. Sure, he has created countless hits including "Blue Ain't Your Color," "Cop Car" and "Wasted Time." Yes, he took time out of his schedule to mentor up and coming talent as a judge on American Idol for four seasons. And yes, he has an incredible family that includes Nicole Kidman as his wife. But perhaps the cherry on top is that Keith appears to be beloved by countless singers and entertainers in the music industry. "Keith is absolutely amazing.
