Tonight's episode utterly turned me off. Another lame cop show, though I like the leads, Duhamel and Winter. (I guess the joke there is that Duhamel is pretty while Winter looks like he slept at the I-94 rest stop, but that's playing out pretty fast.) My irritation lies with writers David Shore and Vince Gilligan: Why name a show after a real city and set the story in a specific region that you continually point to in your script, and be utterly false about it? It does not rain every other day in southwest Michigan, in fact our weather is actually nice (surprise!)though changeable. Migraine headaches are not an accepted condition to get a Michigan Medical Marijuana card. There are no dispensaries in Michigan, we have caregivers (private growers). If anyone tried what Penn's character did in Calhoun County, Sheriff Saxton's boys would have him on charges in a hot minute. And "maple sugar shacks"? What do you think we are, Youpers? Sugaring is strictly a seasonal activity for farmers with maple groves, duh. The rest of us use store-bought on our Eggo waffles.
So it's supposed to be Battle Creek, but no mention of cereal, or food science, or Denso, or Fort Custer, or highway traffic, or sports, or gambling at Firekeepers, or getting stuck waiting for trains, or the meth problems in Emmett Township ... I could go on. What is the point of situating your story out here in flyover country when the writing team can't even do the most basic web research? (Is anyone on the team even from Michigan?) Why pretend you know or care anything about Battle Creek? Why not make up a town for this show, then you can laugh at it and make fun of all the characters for living there and not actually insult anybody. Good luck, Vince. You're going to need it.
