The weak was more frequent than the strong for sure

Okay here we have the Teen Choice Awards 2014 edition from August that year that runs for a bit under 90 minutes and was directed by Emmy nominee Michael Dempsey. The good news is that it really is an award show and it's not lost in a whole lot of music performances like many music award shows these days. A bit sad though to take this as a factor already as it really should be a given that the core of an award show are the awards. Anyway, here it's done right in terms of percentage I think, so nothing to object to, maybe also because most of the awards are about acting rather than singing, at least the televised ones. And there we already have a problem. In my opinion, it's never good if not all awards are handed out during the broadcast and here it was a whole lot that wasn't. It's pretty disrespectful if random categories are shut out. Now for this specific edition, some winners are good, others not so much. The big winner in terms of movies was "The Fault in Our Stars" and that's fine as it is a solid work. But no award show should nominate the likes of Pretty Little Liars, let alone hand awards to it, let alone have the (male) cast present awards. Other thumbs-downs go to Zendaya, One Direction, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato. Solid winners include Ariana Grande, Odeya Rush, Miley Cyrus and a few others perhaps. The acceptance speeches were mostly disappointing though, really generic (my best friend giving me this award blah blah) and if one out of five was somewhat different, then they felt pretty fake and unauthentic. Even Donald Sutherland was underwhelming after an okay start. I don't have much knowledge about the male host as I have never seen Teen Wolf, but Sarah Hyland was fine, even if I am biased with her due to my liking of Modern Family. They could have been better, could have been worse too admittedly. Lucy Hale was the epitome of this award show really representing the many beautiful people here as I think she's drop-dead gorgeous, but not too many of them were really artists that I would consider above-average talented judging from what I have seen by them so far. That's why all in all I give this event a thumbs-down. It's not a failure ultimately, but I'd really not recommend it to anybody who doesn't love award shows. Skip the watch.
