Rinse and Repeat

After a fairly solid, if not entirely remarkable, pilot episode the show has already settled into a rhythm. And it's a surprisingly familiar one. The end of the pilot jettisoned the tacked on female cohort, only to have this next episode start with Constantine acquiring a brand new tacked on female cohort. Granted she's slightly more interesting than the last one, but it feels like a lateral move at best.

The show has also appeared to settle for a "monster of the week" style format. While it's the type of format that the character most lends himself to, I'm just not sure it's one that works anymore. This kind of show had its heyday back with X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Back then it was enough just to have a new weird occurrence or villain each week because it was stuff that by and large audiences hadn't seen on TV before. But between those shows and Fringe, Grimm, Supernatural and a half dozen others the format has really been played out. I don't think there's any supernatural threat that can be thrown at Constantine that audiences won't feel like they've seen somewhere before. It's the trap that "Elementary" fell into: sticking well conceived and well acted characters with run of the mill story lines (standard police procedural mysteries in that case) which didn't allow those characters to shine as they should.

What this leaves is everything hinging on the characters. Thankfully Constantine himself is still quite watchable and fun to be around. The new addition of Zed is pretty much a wash, she's got good chemistry but the character doesn't feel like she's adding much to the process yet. Personally I really would have liked to have seen Constantine hoof it alone, at least for a few episodes.

It's still a fun show, and it's hardly a waste of time. However it doesn't really bring much that feels really new or fresh. I'll continue to stick it out for now, but if this episode represents the standard of the show then I'm not sure I'll be around all the way through this season.

...not the chapter of your life, but full of charisma...

Warning: Spoilers
The lack of quality in the direction section or in the more theatrical scenes, is supplanted by the charisma of the main actor and the continuous winks to the comic book series. The chapter has a good twist, and as a gift we see Zed's room, with memorable drawings like the cover of vertigo comic Hellblazer issue 1 by the legendary Dave McKean.

Hell is rising...time to call the Hellblazer!

Warning: Spoilers
Matt Ryan as Constantine is probably the best comic book lead on TV right now. And for me, he ranks just below Robert Downey Jr. in the current panel-to-screen setup.

While his Constantine is still not totally accurate (what is??), he manages to come across as perfectly in line with his famous comic book counterpart. And given what DC has been doing lately with him, this is a welcome sight.

First off, sod off if you complain about Supernatural comparisons. Not only was that show (which I like) a homage to the original Constantine book, the dynamics here are radically different from the Dean-Sam chemistry.

Not only are the demons more beautifully and graphically done, but Constantine himself comes across as a unique anti-hero type, who really has no one to fall back on (and if you know the guy, Zed isn't long for this world). And true to the world of Hellblazer, sometimes the humans are the true monsters of the piece.

Coming to Zed, she is exactly what this show needed. No need for hand-holding,powerful and useful in her own right - she is a perfect foil to John.

About the case-of-the-week, this is only the first season! Back off and let this show get some air. Myself, while I could do without the gypsy stereotyping (which alerted me to the fact that the wife did it), everything else clicked perfectly. And I loved how John didn't battle the deceased miners, but helped them out. Not everything needs to be about fistcuffs.

The dialogue, save for some clichés, was heaven sent for someone who wants more from his comic book shows (Flash and Arrow of CW are consistently annoying me with that) and while a lack of Chas was disheartening, it was definitely to the show's benefit that the Zed-Constantine relationship was given room, complete with the uneasy sexual tension just the way Hellblazer did it.

Hellblazer Rising

Matt Ryan, best choice as Constantine, in my opinion. He looks the part and he plays it well, and as an avid fan of Hellblazer....I LOVE IT! The graphics are very well done too, with the creatures being really cool to look at. The pilot left a bit to be desired, but one has to remember...it's a pilot, so sod off! This second episode I quite enjoyed and I can't wait to see the next one. Constantine came off as more of the anti-hero this time around, and as a bit of an arse, which made me laugh with delight. There's the John Constantine I know. I also enjoyed that the John and Zed relationship got attention. Through the whole episode I was constantly going, "U two get together as lovers. I can see it now, even though u don't get along right at this time." :) There was uneasy sexual tension, just like in Hellblazer. It was a bit easy to guess who did it...but there was still an element around other people that made you guess about who it was during the first part. Other than that...very well done. (The reason for the 9/10) I will be watching more and I can't wait for the next episode. (I really hope this show goes on. It's well done, and we finally have a good and pretty true representation of John Constantine.)
