Donna and Jody are perfectly matched.
CubsandCulture23 September 2020
The vampire story itself is a little weak-it is a pretty rote monster of the week. But it barely matters as the show finally had the idea to pair two actresses together that work perfectly as foils and just fit. Donna and Jody are easily the best reoccurring women characters on the show and this introduction of them as a buddy dramedy fits in. They feel as complementary as Rufus and Bobby. And I love seeing how characters in the know expand out from Hunters. I even like the melodrama with Donna's jerk of an ex-husband.

The show struggles with keeping women involved and even alive. But at least after 10 years they gave us this.

Entertaining.
mm-398 January 2015
Hibbing 911 is entertaining in an off-center way. The Script writers for Supernatural are running out of ideas so they have to inject new plot devices for the series. This time the new plot devices worked; the two opposite female cops add comic twist which was hilarious. One police officer is an introvert while the other character is an extrovert; Similar to Sam and Dead but different. There is a Fargo movie influence with the director's style and feel for Hibbing 911, which blends perfectly into the story. The story unfolds as a monster hunt with liberal doses of humor and a bizarre ending. A memorable character plot twist. Well acted and executed Hibbing hits the mid- season target. The viewer gets comic relief and change for the main story line. A good mid season episode provides a break for the audience from over saturation of the concurring season 10 story line. Seven out of ten.

Okay, but dull
wolfordcheyenne25 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was dull and slow. However, I did like Jody and Donna meeting each other. We could've used more Sam and Dean in the overall plot. Is it me or are they doing a lot of werewolf episodes recently?

Great Episode
Shane31822 December 2014
Sheriff Jody Mills is forced to attend a sheriff's retreat, and rather reluctantly pairs up with Sheriff Donna Hanscum (who you might remember from The Purge back in season 9) when the two of them catch wind of a suspicious murder. Sam and Dean, of course, arrive on scene to aid them in their hunt.

Seeing as how this episode was (partially) made by Jenny Klein, I feared the worst. This isn't to say that Jenny Klein is a bad writer, however, as of late, I have not been too impressed with her episodes, such as the trainwreck known as Rock and a Hard Place back in season 9. However, Klein was not alone in creating this episode, the story was written by both her and Phil Sgriccia. Odd, since - to my knowledge - Sgriccia has been solely a director in Supernatural up until this point. It's unclear how much of a hand he had in the creation of the script, but whatever did happen between the two of them, it worked. Putting "Rock and a Hard Place" back to back with this episode and I wouldn't for a moment believe that it was by the same person, because this episode was actually really good.

If you wanted an episode about the brothers, you aren't going to get a whole lot of that here. The majority of the plot is focused on Jody and Donna, and I actually found myself invested in their stories and entertained by their screen time together, much more than I ever thought I would.

Donna is an absolute joy to watch. Last season, the Purge was not my favourite, but I do distinctly remember loving Donna's character in that episode. She had an energy and light to her that is extremely rare to see in a show about brooding men. Not only did she bring that same energy into this episode, but it was even better and more enjoyable than before. With more time on screen, we were able to see her character more in depth and expand upon some of the ideas that were introduced with her back in season 9.

Jody Mills returns this episode and, as always, she was wonderful. Both Kim Rhodes and Briana Buckmaster were phenomenal. Their chemistry on screen felt very natural; those two bounced off each other perfectly. Anytime they were on screen together at the same time, it held my attention.

This episode, in sum, was a Monster of the Week episode, but focused a great deal on the characters and development rather than fighting a creature, which does eventually happen. And this is where I feel the episode took a bit of a dip. The characters are great, the actors are great, the setting and pacing were all great, but the monster aspect of the episode is where things went downhill. The build up toward the 'big bad' was much stronger and greater than the actual reveal. I don't want to give anything away, but I'll just say that I was not too impressed with the monster.

Even so, my disinterest in the actual case did not take over the other great parts of the episode. It was lighthearted for the most part, it was funny and enjoyable, and gave spotlight to some minor characters that are probably the most unique and interesting female characters we've ever had in Supernatural. All in all, the episode was well written and definitely worth watching.

OK MOW Episode, Love Jodi Mills!
bmacoms13 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I posted this on another site but put a lot of thought into it so am posting here as well. This was one of my favorite episodes of Season 10 (this does not mean I was head over heels about this episode). I really like MOW episodes. I was hoping that there would be more "scary" episodes and this one wasn't really scary but I'll take it over Paper Moon and Ask Jeeves any day. I love Jodi Mills but also prefer her hair longer vs shorter. I thought the dynamics between Kim and Brianna were cute but didn't all together feel "natural", it felt like they were acting. We have had several vampire episodes and as far as vampire episodes go this one was not that great. The hippie vampire at the end really over played her part to the point of being a little ridiculous. Some direction for her to tone it down would have made her more believable. The final vampire scene, for me, was drawn out way too long, I would have rather seen more fighting and a lot less talking, especially by hippie chick. The way that Dean escaped his rope binding (they always escape) was less than exciting and we all saw what was coming with Brianna's breaking her sunglass lens to cut her rope but her escape method was a bit more interesting. Sam and Dean had a few really good scenes (there was one where I really laughed at Dean but can't remember right now what he said, but it was funny - something about his "fake" job?) Also, the scene at the end where Sam was concerned about the MoC and Dean said this is the "FIRST" time he didn't feel like it was compelling him was a red flag and also it was a lie. The last two episodes have ended with foreshadowing of what's to come with the MoC taking control of Dean again and it's presented to the viewer in such a cynical way from Sam (Sam doesn't believe Dean about the MoC) and it is a little insulting to the viewers because we know what's coming and these 3 minute endings "teasing" us about what is to come really fall flat for me. I still find the sequencing of episodes in Season 10 to leave the viewer with a very choppy feel. The flow of the story doesn't feel fluid and the episodes don't really feel like they are in the correct order. "Fan Fiction" was my favorite episode of the season. We all know the MoC is coming back and we have to wait until the mid- season finale to see what happens and then we get the holiday break before we get more. For me the first half of Season 10 has been choppy and very up and down and all over the place. I feel like the MoC storyline has been spread across episodes to intentionally be the mid-season finale to leave us "hanging" and wanting more but it has had the opposite effect for me. I feel like this season is disorganized and the journey is very bumpy. I'd really like to see the second half of Season 10 come together.

Very disappointing episode
debster8596 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I found this to be one of the worst episode apart from "PaperMoon so far, it just bored the hell out of me i like Jody but i don't want to see an entire episode centured around her and those annoying policemen, Sam and Dean were hardly in this episode and to me it felt like they were the supporting characters instead of the main ones. The monster doing the killings was nothing more then a group of vampires who now eat everything instead of feeding on human blood which is a load of BS , it would have been better to have a group of stray Leviathans killing and eating people .Evern better a new type of monster would have been more exciting in my opinion . Too much screen time on dull characters standing about talking crap and not enough horror and action to keep me interested .

Boring, like the rest of S10 so far.
ihyousf4 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I usually don't post reviews, but i felt i needed to post a critical note. Supernatural is one of my favorite TV series of all time. The acting, the stories, especially the mythology eps used to be great. I liked all seasons so far, although I didn't like S7 as much. S10 however is shaping up to become the worst season by far. If things keep going like this, I prefer they put an end to the show.

If feels to me they are stretching the show with boring, uninspired eps where not much really happens and with nothing we haven't seen in a better ep before. Or you get these weird, boring, creative eps with a bunch of teens singing and dancing that gets extremely overrated imo. Creative, sure, but not the reason for me to watch Supernatural. Compare this stuff to some of the older seasons, which used to be a lot harder, darker, bloodier, scarier and more interesting. S10 is starting to look like a show for 13 year old girls or something with weak eps about werewolves, vampires, singing, dancing, loving angels that no one cares about, etc.

This latest ep makes it even worse. They collect a bunch of sub characters from previous B episodes and let them run more than half the episode. I mean wtf, Sam and Dean are barely in it, when they are in it they seem weak, and still this gets an 8,2 average?? Cmon... I hope the writers turn this season around again pretty soon, or I will stop watching.... to preserve my fond memories for what this show used to be.

Hanscum's good
janedoe530013 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
"Oh really, Jody Mills? Well if you say so!" What the writers of this show needs to understand, and soon, is that a character doesn't have authority just 'cause they've been in more than 2 episodes. It has to be believable, they have to earn it, otherwise it's just insulting to the viewer! So did Jody earn her medal? Lets see;

1. She was dumb enough to let her zombie son eat her husband, then Sam had to save her 2. She met one leviathan that Bobby saved her from 3. She once cleaned Bobbys house and inadvertently helped discover Leviathans weakness 4. She helped Sam read a couple books on time travel, but didn't help the story otherwise 5. She met one vampire, got stabbed, and the vampires adobtive daughter saved her. 6. She never killed a single monster herself.

And now, suddenly she is THE authority on all things monstrous. As if it wasn't stupid enough she was the one to give Donna "the talk", now she's telling the friggin Winchesters what to do? And they just accept it? This is painfully out of character for Sam and Dean. Lets look at Donna; 1. She is naive 2. She is clumsy 3. She is kinda stupid 4. She is annoying 5. She is not in particularly monsterhunt-friendly shape 6. She's seen a vampires teeth from 20 feet away

DONT BLAME ME, I didn't write that horrible stereotype of a character! That's who she is, and now, because Judge Jody says so she's in with the tough guys? No, doesn't fly, it's so insulting to the intelligence of the fans, and to the credibility of the main characters. But it fits the plot, that's all it does, and that's what drags the episode down for me. A plot should revolve around the rules already set up around the characters and the universe they inhabit, not the other way around.

Well, aside from this the episode is average at best. The banter between Dean and "Deputy douchebag" is fun, but that's pretty much all Sam and Dean get to do, the plot is recycled from an older episode, it's a filler and has nothing to do with the overall arc of the season, and like any other episode that for some reason choose to focus on underdeveloped supporting characters, it's just not very Supernatural-y. 4/10

Confused
vn_larsen114 February 2021
Since when do vampires actually eat human flesh and organs? What is that about? Aside from that, everything that other review said about Jody and Donna is exactly what I thought as well. Not a good episode.
