Dutch geology student Alfred's obsessive dream is proving his late father's daring theory on the meteoric or volcanic origin of most of the flooded craters in the marsh area of the rocky Norwegian tundra. He joins a summer expedition with Nordic colleagues Arne, Qvigstad and Mikkelsen. Conversations in the endless summer daylight, mostly as sleeping tent buddy at any night, also turn philosophical and religious. Alfred is obsessed with the theory, and haunted by his fight with mentoring professor Nummedal, which leads to accidents and physical horror in the desolate wasteland.
