- Haley and Andy start spending a lot of time together. Gloria wants Manny to learn Spanish at school instead of French, and a reporter takes more than a passing interest in Cameron and Mitchell's lives.
- Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) spotted Ann Gibbs, who was a reporter for a local news station. Mitchell couldn't resist, as he was working on a court case where an evil corporation was paying less than minimum wage to its workers, but Ann seemed to be more interested in interviewing Cam, who was a varsity football coach and was undefeated. Mitchell wasn't happy, unless his standard solution for fixing Lily's (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) doll when it won't stop crying was to hit it against anything solid. But Cameron asked him to play along, particularly when they needed to host a pancake breakfast for the players the morning of the homecoming game. Which Mitchell reluctantly agreed to, even though it meant getting up early right before he had to make closing arguments in his case. Certainly he had a case against Cam, who was just pandering to the cameras and not doing any actual work with the pancake breakfast.
After Mitchell chewed him out about it, a guilty Cameron went down to the courthouse to see Mitchell in action and was quite impressed. Of course, Mitchell's impassioned speech to the jury would have gone better had Cameron's cell phone not rung and if he hadn't knocked over the state flag trying to get out of the courtroom to answer it. But the team did win the homecoming game, and Ann wanted to know how Cameron felt. Cameron credited the parents and the players, but mostly he credited Mitchell for fighting for the rights of those who had no one to turn to and for breaking down all of the stereotypes gay men have to go through. Crying while he gave that speech didn't help much, but he got the point across.
Manny (Rico Rodriguez) wanted to take French in high school instead of Spanish. This despite Gloria (Sofía Vergara) hiring a tutor for him...and some eye candy for herself, apparently. Jay (Ed O'Neill) was staying on the sidelines about it until Gloria and the tutor spoke in Spanish and he misinterpreted it as making fun of him. The tutor staying around to be Joseph's swim instructor was probably the last straw. Jay signed Manny's permission form to switch to French, and he let the tutor go. Gloria was furious. So furious, in fact, she couldn't find the right words in English to tell Jay how she felt. When he found out Gloria wanted Manny to learn Spanish so she could have someone in the house to talk to and say the things she couldn't say properly in English and not feel stupid, Jay admitted he was wrong. Manny could still take French, but he got a Spanish tutor back in the house...for him. And the first lesson he learned was how to say 'I love you' in Spanish to Gloria. (GLORIA: I love it! Now you sound like the stupid one!)
At the Dunphys, there was something wrong with the kids. Although Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire (Julie Bowen) were talking about different kids. Phil saw Alex (Ariel Winter) studying obsessively and appeared to have not slept in days. Claire thought it was Haley (Sarah Hyland), who had been sitting around all day and not doing anything. Or so Claire thought. Andy (Joseph's nanny) came by and the two went off on their own. Claire was suspicious, but Haley simply said they were having sex. This was to get Claire to stop asking questions. What Haley and Andy were really doing were coaching each other for job interviews. Andy was not happy about being a nanny and given the respect he had for Phil, he wanted to get into the real estate business and learn from the best. Haley had an interview as an assistant for a fashion designer with a serious attitude problem. Who had a receptionist with an even bigger attitude problem. But when he insulted her blog as too cute, she fired back about how some of his fashions looked liked they were designed for a "My Little Pony fever dream." So he demands to know five things that looked wrong on his receptionist's attire, and Haley could have named ten things. Needless to say, she was edgy enough for him and she had herself a job. And Andy did as well. Although Claire still thought there was something going on between them. This despite the fact working for Phil meant Andy could get his girlfriend an engagement ring. (HALEY: She's really obsessed with us.)
And thankfully, Alex did finally get to sleep...once she discovered the pages were moving back and forth too fast for her to read the words.
