Kubrick only made a handful of films in his career, he was a maddening perfectionist who would work for years on a single film. Yet almost every one of his films except Barry Lyndon has been hailed as a masterpiece and my favorite is Full Metal Jacket. This is a wonderful documentary about the behind the scenes making of the film and there is so much trivia revealed. For example to play the bumbling Private "Gomer Pyle" Vincent D'Onofrio had to gain a whopping seventy pounds (thats more then DeNiro had to gain for Raging Bull). Fans of this film could not imagine anyone but Lee Ermey playing Gunnery Sergeant Hartman but he was originally just the films technical advisor. Going on four decades after its release Kubrick's wonderful film is still one of the best war films every made.
