POV flying
SnoopyStyle1 September 2019
This is a How to Train Your Dragon short. Snotlout is testing his sheep launcher getting ready for the Dragon Race. The kids all claim to have invented the game. In a flashback, they are rounding up escaped sheep and a competition naturally ensues. Stoick assigns Hiccup as the temporary chief and orders him to prepare for the Regatta. Hiccup tries to get everyone to setup the Regatta but peer pressure forces him to lead the Dragon Race. This is solid Train Your Dragon fair. It would be nice to have more first person POV flying to spice up the story. It's not a theatrical movie which is probably why the theatrical moves aren't being done. With our larger TVs, theatrical camera moves are still enjoyed on our 'smaller' screens. It's a fine story and it's general family fun.

Only the animation truly succeeds

Warning: Spoilers
"Dawn of the Dragon Racers" is another addition to the "How to Train Your Dragon" franchise. This was done about a year ago by Dreamworks, runs for 26 minutes and really belongs more to the television show than to the movies. Hiccup's dad is alive, even if he only plays a minor role in this one and the voice actors are pretty much the same as from the series. Of course, series and films do not really differ in that regard, but there are exceptions, such as Ruffnut's voice for example.

The story is not too new or creative. Hiccup, as usual, obeys his dad and the father somehow deals with it. The animation is really very good and certainly the best part about this film. The humour is so-so, some funny parts, but as a whole not convincing, even for a movie that does not reach the 30-minute mark. To me personally, this was a disappointment because I never really liked the sheep catching sport they played in the film already too and this entire short film basically revolves around it, so that would be a thumbs-down from me. A bit disappointed as the 2 directors Bogan and Sanford are fairly experienced with the franchise. Not recommended.
