- TriviaThe Hotel Cortez is inspired by the Hotel Cecil which has a dark history which includes several suicides, murders, and was stayed at by serial killers Richard Ramirez a.k.a. the Night Stalker and Jack Unterweger. The Hotel Cecil made news in 2013 with the mysterious death of Elisa Lam (to whom season five is dedicated).

Season 5 - Hotel
"Are we ever ready to see ourselves for what we are?"
A bit of Lynch (Twin Peaks), a bit of Kubrick's "The Shining", a bit of pop culture history, and interweaving with previous seasons. Surreal, psychedelic, not entirely linear, intriguingly twisted and morbid, most of all fun, and for the first time since the first season I'm sorry that there is no more. Horror clichés and 'unraveling' of the mysteries of famous serial killers are balanced to keep you on the edge of rooting for the 'bad guys' (although there are practically no 'good guys' in this season).
"Hotel" does not bring any real novelty to the genre, and yet it gives horror quite a new face. Originality achieved by clichés has already become a trademark of this series and, although not particularly scary, this season is bloody and atmospheric enough to deserve to be classified as horror more than any previous one.
In addition to excellent photography and direction, the development of the characters and their relationships is also very good. I've heard that the series went down with the departure of Jessica Lange. I didn't miss her. Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Wes Bentley, Lady Gaga, Mare Winningham ("Postmortem excrement is the biggest stain challenge of them all.") and others have done their best to fill that void, and Dennis O'Hare stole every scene he appeared in. Liz is so adorable and unforgettable.
I got hooked and swallowed the season in a gulp. I want more!
"We have two selves. One the world needs us to be, compliant, and the shadow. Ignore it and life is forever suffering."
