So far this season has been nowhere near as bad as most people say it is. Can't wait to see what they do next!

Just as Rocky isn't strictly about boxing, The Karate Kid ain't strictly about karate. In fact, both of these acclaimed movies were directed by John G. Avildsen. The Karate Kid is uplifting. I remember seeing it on video back in the 80s (yep, when videos ruled the roost) at my pastor's place and I was very much swept up in the emotion of a movie that I should have seen in a cinema.
I can't believe it's taken me ages and ages to finally post a review here after over 30 years. Anyway, I loved the Community episode Queer Studies & Advanced Waxing which had an amazing theatrical homage to The Karate Kid.

Gillian...very little here...but when she did...still just not Britta from years past. Really want to know what the hell happened/changed.
Annie's acting on stage was also subpar.
I like what's his name...Rafi...Jason Manztoukas...yet this time he played a character that was a little over the top and screamed. Very against type for him. No...that's what he does. Jeff...nothing at all. Paget Brewster...pointless. Wifi...birds...Elroy (the bathroom's that way)...boring ass storyline.
Gay dean. I still have to finish the episode..and not sure what pops up the rest of the season...but is he gay or not? I really disliked them talking about it or being the focal point. I LOVED that they danced all around it for 5 seasons. That's one of the many many trivial things that made Community awesome. They did things subtle...even when they were overtly doing things. They somehow found a way to communicate the dean's gayness...and I don't think they ever mentioned the word gay towards the dean once...not even Pierce. I think Leonard called him fruit once. That was funny.
Chang was fine. I thought it was a neat idea...the karate kid play. But this show is so far gone that even something good like this that previously would have been another awesome episode in the show...just feels like a half hearted attempt to be funny. Like...if you have ideas like that and can be funny...why not do some more of that, not less.
I rated the 1st 3 episodes with 3 stars. 7 is my rewatch number. I never need to watch those again. This episode is also forgettable. It's not nearly as bad as the 1st 3...but the only good part is the karate kid scenes. Everything else should have been cutting room. In fact...that would have been great. 22 minutes of just Chang doing the play.
