Burt Lancaster is referred to twice in this episode. Walter Blunt's dream about him is a clip from Lancaster's surreal psychological existential drama The Swimmer (1968). Blunt's adjutant/best friend/butler Harry Chandler mentions that Blunt dreamed earlier about Lancaster flying. This could refer to Lancaster's popular drama The Gypsy Moths (1969), where he played a traveling skydiver.
The scene with Celia (Dolly Wells) playing the piano on the bed of a truck is a visual reference to the opening scenes of Five Easy Pieces (1970) with Jack Nicholson.
The pianos on the stairs in this show are a nod to the classic Laurel & Hardy film, "The Music Box". Harry and Walter have issues carrying up a piano on the stairs located in the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles between 923 and 935 Vendome Street. The problems they encounter are very similar to the ones experienced by Stan and Ollie at the very same location.
