- The NCIS team investigate a series of crime scenes that appear to be copycats of previous cases. Meanwhile, two of Gibbs' ex-wives show up at a crime scene to discuss something important with him.
- When 5 people who are either Navy or Marine are found dead in a diner, the team goes to investigate. While there Diane shows up and Rebecca Gibbs second ex-wife is with her. Rebecca says she and Jethro need to talk. Gibbs goes home to avoid her but she shows up and says she wants to apologize for what she did during their marriage. McGee informs Gibbs that all five went to the same tax firm. Gibbs and McGee go there and discover that it's empty and there were signs of a shoot out. They learn that blood found there, are all from the victims at the diner. Which means they were killed there and brought to the diner. Later another man is killed. When the body is examined, Ducky points out that the body resembles how Mike Franks was killed. And Abby points out that the diner resembles what happened when Jenny Sheppard was killed. Later he gets a call from Diane asking him to meet her. He goes to a roof top and meets but she asks him what he wants. She says he called her that's when Gibbs tells her they need to leave that's when someone shoots her with a sniper rifle in the same way Caitlin Todd was killed.—rcs0411@yahoo.com
- A diner staff arrives at work to find a massacre inside.
At work, Ellie and Tony are having fun with a list of McGee's New Year's Resolutions (stop watching cat videos, separate whites from darks). Palmer interrupts with potentially terrifying news: Gibbs has stopped drinking coffee per his doctor's orders.
Gibbs interrupts with the body of the week: five of them.
At the diner, it looks like the victims all shot each other.
Outside, a woman is making a ruckus when the local policeman won't let her through. It's Gibbs' ex-wife Diane Sterling (Melinda McGraw). She's soon joined by another woman, Gibbs' ex-wife No. 2 Rebecca Chase (Jeri Ryan). Inside, Rebecca says they met at an "emotional dwarf support group."
Diane brought Rebecca to a crime scene to talk to Gibbs because he couldn't get away.
Back at the office, it's victim rundown time. Victim No. 1 is staff sergeant Victor Delgado, a body builder. Chief Petty Officer Bo Lorden just returned from Afghanistan. They don't seem to be connected. All of the victims have good records and all failed to report to work last week. They're also all late paying their taxes.
Down in the lab, Abby explains that the four men surrounded the female victim, who fired at each man, killing them all before succumbing to her wounds.
Abby found they all had appointments with We Got Your Back Taxes accounting firm.
Gibbs races out of the building to avoid seeing ex No. 2.
At home, he sits down with a cup of coffee and inhales deeply, but pitches it. McGee calls with an address for the accounting firm. They make plans to go there in the morning. Since Diane works at the IRS, she's coming along.
Suddenly, No. 2 joins Gibbs. She starts to yell at him for ditching her at NCIS, then calms down to talk. He offers her a drink then she explains that she quit and that's why she's there. She bottomed out about a year ago and is at the step in the program where she makes amends.
She apologizes that he caught her in bed with another man. Gibbs says OK and leaves it at that. He mentions his terrible caffeine withdrawal headache and she works on his temples. He gets lost for a moment.
In the morning, McGee and Diane walk in to find Gibbs curled around Rebecca on the couch. He says they were talking and fell asleep.
Diane shows Gibbs that someone hacked the IRS to find Navy sailors who were late paying their taxes.
Before Diane can drag Rebecca away, Rebecca gives Gibbs an invitation to her wedding.
At the office that supposedly belongs to the accounting firm, they find an empty warehouse space. The renter paid in cash and gave a fake name.
McGee notices a bullet casing and blood. They turn on their black light and find the walls are covered in blood.
In the lab, Abby IDs the blood as belonging to the diner victims. She now thinks the diner shoot-out was staged. None of the victims had gunshot residue on their hands.
Ellie gets called to another crime scene, where Master Chief Eckham Beams is lying in the street dead. He has a We Got Your Back Taxes card in his pocket.
Down in the morgue, Palmer and Duckie find the attack familiar. The murder weapon was a syringe. Gibbs realizes the scene mimics the murder of Gibbs' mentor, Mike Franks.
Abby joins them with a crime sketch from years ago, the California scene where Director Jenny Shepherd was killed. It matches the staged diner scene. Someone is recreating murders from Gibbs' past.
Back in the office, they plan to talk to all of the people who had access to the crime scene sketch of Shepherd's murder. The team gingerly points out that someone is recreating the murders of people Gibbs cared about at the same time someone else he used to care about showed up: Rebecca. He freely admits she's a liar and totally unstable, but doesn't think she's a killer.
They show him a large wire transfer to Rebecca from an off-shore account three months ago. The IP address used to hack the IRS is Rebecca's.
Gibbs talks to Rebecca in interrogation as the entire team, plus Palmer and Duckie, watches from the observation room. Rebecca's fiancé and lawyer arrives. It's the man Gibbs found her in bed with. Gibbs can't take it anymore and chugs the man's coffee.
When Rebecca refuses to talk, Gibbs asks her where she was two nights ago, knowing the answer is his couch. She says the money was left to her by a relative then argues she's being set up.
Abby examines Rebecca's phone and finds it's bugged. Someone knew she was coming to see Gibbs. The bug traces back to a two-year-old espionage case involving a Russian mercenary. Abby finds he's worked with Sergei Mishnev, their No. 1 most wanted.
The team surrounds the Russian's last known address, an RV park. They find pictures of Rebecca all over the wall. Diane calls, ordering Gibbs to come meet her and saying she knows what's going on. Gibbs orders Rebecca and her fiancé into protective custody.
He goes to meet Diane on the roof of a parking garage, but she doesn't know why she's there. Gibbs realizes they've been set up. He's hustling Diane to her car when a shot rings out. She falls dead, with a bullet through her forehead.
From a distance, Sergei Mishnev looks at Gibbs through his scope and promises it's only the beginning. With Diane's blood spattered all over him, Gibbs goes down to the street and fires at Mishnev as he drives off.
Back at the office, Gibbs orders protective custody for Tobias Fornell and Emily, Diane's daughter. McGee reports on a motion sensor that was set off when they entered the RV and triggered the recording of Diane calling Gibbs. The voice is a fake. There's also a recording from Mishnev, addressing Gibbs and telling him he should have seen it coming. "You mess with my family, I mess with yours," he says, adding: "Check."
But they don't know what family he's referring to.
Down in the morgue, Palmer bows out of Diane's autopsy, saying he doesn't want to cut up another friend. Gibbs comes down to see her and remembers happier moments.
Duckie says if Sergei has a master plan, it means they might be able to figure it out and stop him. He's not happy with just killing Gibbs.
Abby comes down to report that Mishnev got access to Director Shepherd's murder file through the virus that their own IT guy Kevin made for him, the one that trashed their systems. He got Gibbs' personnel and everyone he's ever worked with.
Abby has an idea that will either help them find Sergei or "kill us all."
In the lab, she explains to McGee that she wants to re-release Mishnev's virus and trace it. She thinks she's removed all the dangerous elements.
Later, they call Gibbs to report they traced it to an apartment building next to where Diane was killed. Gibbs races there alone, with Diane's blood still caked to his face. He kicks in the door and start firing. He shoots two of Sergei's men but not Sergei. Gibbs starts beating him, but one of Sergei's men knocks him out.
Gibbs wakes up with the team standing around him. Sergei is gone. Gibbs phone rings. It's Fornell.
