The Jersey Slayer
In August 2011, during the course of a few minutes, Damian Rzeszowski butchered his entire family: his wife, young daughter, baby son, his father-in-law, and two other people - a mother and daughter.
This was never a whodunnit but a whydunnit? It was also arguably the most shocking crime ever committed on the Island of Jersey. Rzeszowski had also stabbed himself, and was lucky to survive - some would say it would be better if he hadn't.
In October the following year he was convicted only of manslaughter by the legal fiction of diminished responsibility.
This documentary speaks primarily to the first responders, including an off-duty fireman. They may be hardened professionals, but they were clearly badly affected by this carnage. Who wouldn't be?
An interesting aside, according to a Jersey blogger, this was one of the first crimes anywhere and certainly on Jersey (crimes with a capital C) to be broken on social media, in particular Facebook and Twitter. This may be entertaining for bloggers et al, but the very last thing the family of an accident or a murder victim want is to learn about their loved one's predicament or demise from Facebook.
