Coming of age is a constant negotiation between who you are and who you’re not — it’s the most intense period of a process that will last for the rest of your life. Coming-of-age movies naturally tend to dramatize that negotiation, which is why so many of them hinge on hollowed out Harry Potter types who become the most boring characters in their own stories: It’s easier to paint on a portrait on a blank slate, easier to keep score of what someone is adding to (or subtracting from) themselves when you start from scratch. The only problem with that approach is that it strands a lot of very similar teenagers in films about how they’re not like everyone else.
It’s a trap that’s endemic to its genre, and one that “Hot Summer Nights” tries to avoid in fascinating and disastrous fashion: Here’s a...

Thanks to the success he has found on platforms like YouTube, Jordan Doww has been able to further his career in both acting and stand-up comedy. Now, the 21-year-old creator has added another feather to his cap. He has landed a leading role in Reach, an upcoming feature film that will also star Garrett Clayton and Joey Bragg.
Reach will feature Clayton as a high school-age adolescent who plans to commit suicide after being bullied by a character portrayed by Doww. Bragg will play a member of an anti-bullying support group who befriends Clayton’s character and changes his life. Jarret Tarnol is set to direct the picture, which features an award-winning script penned by Maria Capp.

Some people fancy themselves a two-hour movie on the largest screen possible, whereas others prefer six-second clips on the smallest screen possible. The incredibly stark size and length differences don’t correlate with the popularity of each, however, as Vine has skyrocketed to 200 million active users as of last December. The personalities on Vine are arguably as big as those of movie stars, seeing such fame that many of them have launched acting or musical careers.
Vine star Cameron Dallas, currently at 9.4 million followers, has tried delving into both, having starred in the AwesomenessTV movie “Expelled” and the Fullscreen film “The Outfield.” He’ll next be jumping into the world of Netflix, as the streaming service has ordered an unscripted series following his exploits.

Indie film distributor GoDigital announced the promotion of Nick Soares to CEO at the Sundance Film Festival this week.
GoDigital, a Los Angeles-based film distributor specializing in tailored digital and day-and-date releases for quality independent and festival-driven content, also announced the appointment of Kevin Iwashina as Vice Chairman of the Board. Soares was formerly serving as CEO of GoDigital subsidiary Distribber.com, a service that has released thousands of independent films on major digital platforms.
Resurrection of Jake the Snake, directed by Steve Yu, is the most recent release from the company. The title is currently topping the charts on the iTunes documentary section. But in terms of something with which online video audiences may be more familiar, GoDigital partnered with Fullscreen Films to release digital sensation Nash Grier’s The Outfield back in November 2015. That title debuted number one spot on the iTunes drama and indie movie charts.

On April 30, 2015, John Green took the stage at Madison Square Garden and addressed a theater full of advertising executives. Green, best known as the author of beloved novels like The Fault In Our Stars, was one of the content creators YouTube had chosen to represent it at its yearly Brandcast, when it tells advertisers why its pre-roll ads, brand integrations, and sponsorships are worthwhile investments. The Vlogbrothers co-host is a prominent figure within the YouTube community, and he arrived with a simple goal: He wanted to warn the assembled advertisers about the potential consequences they would face should they choose to ignore the widening appeal of the homegrown online video community.
“They’re doing live events and publishing books; they’re crowd-funding and producing albums and getting grants from nonprofit organizations,” Green said of his fellow creators. “In short, they’re building a world where they don’t have to depend on advertisers.

Vine star Cameron Dallas has some new representation. The 21-year-old digital celebrity has signed with talent management firm Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
Deadline reported on the Brillstein-Dallas signing, but didn’t disclose more information about what the digital star’s representation would entail. Regardless, Brillstein has added a highly influential client to its talent roster. Dallas originally rose to fame on the Twitter-owned, short-form video platform Vine, where the social media force of nature currently boasts 8.8 million followers. Dallas was the male Choice Web Star for the 2015 Teen Choice Awards, as well as the winner of the Streamys Audience Choice Award for Entertainer of the Year. The young celebrity also spearheaded the social challenge app Challenge with fellow Vine star Nash Grier.
Dallas made his acting debut in the AwesomenessTV film Expelled, which reached the #1 spot on the iTunes movies charts in December 2014 and eventually started streaming on Netflix. In addition to Expelled,...

Even Nash Grier, who has more than 12 million followers on Vine, gets nervous when he has to kiss someone in public — especially when it’s his onscreen girlfriend (Caroline Sunshine) for his first feature movie, “The Outfield.” “It’s a kissing scene where I am on the bleachers and my girlfriend comes in and I kiss her, and we start talking and I kiss her a couple more times… that was the first-ever scene of the movie, that was the first day, first hour we showed up,” he told TheWrap. “I was freaking out.” The anxiety must have paid off.

Fullscreen Films has some celebrating to do. The movie branch of the YouTube multi-channel network Fullscreen debuted the feature film The Outfield, starring Vine celebrities Cameron Dallas and Nash Grier, on November 10, 2015 exclusively on iTunes. And within two days of release, the social media star-led flick landed the #1 spot on the iTunes drama movie chart.
Directed by Eli Gonda and Michael Goldfine, The Outfield features Dallas and Grier, along with Joey Bragg, as three high school baseball stars whose lives all start going different directions than they intended during senior year. The Fullscreen flick, which was produced by Goldfine alongside Gil Kruger, not only landed at the top of the drama films chart in Apple’s iTunes Store, but The Outfield also became the best-selling movie on the platform’s indie films chart.
However, The Outfield can’t claim the same top-level honors for the overall U.S. movies chart on iTunes.

Back in May 2014, Tubefilter reported on Fullscreen’s potential plans to create a video subscription service. For over a year, the YouTube multi-channel network revealed nothing about this impending service -- until now. Fullscreen has officially confirmed it will launch its own premium streaming video-on-demand service in the future.
Fullscreen’s streaming service (currently just titled “Fullscreen”) is being billed as a premium entertainment service available on virtually all screens from the At&T and Chernin-owned multi-channel network. Fullscreen Founder and CEO George Strompolos wrote in a company blog post the Svod will aim to “bridge the gap between social media and television for youth audiences.”
And the McN has plenty of content planned for release on the service, which will include original Fullscreen content (both series and film projects), licensed and unscripted series, podcasts, editorial pieces, hosted shows, exclusive releases, and more. Fullscreen’s first ever presentation at the Newfronts was filled with news. Among other items, the digital network revealed the first teaser trailer for #O2LFOREVER, a documentary feature that will follow the recent tour of since-disbanded YouTube supergroup Our2ndLife.
The O2L documentary was first announced in June 2014 as the next project from Michael Goldfine, who served as the producer for the film Camp Takota. Goldfine followed O2L as they participated in The Digitour, which took them to cities around the Us last summer. The teaser shares some of the footage collected from O2L’s tour appearances.
Several developments have affected the film since it was revealed. O2L has broken up, with its members (all of whom are partnered with Fullscreen) focusing on their own channels and other collaborative efforts. In addition, Goldfine is now the Chief Content Officer at Fullscreen, and #O2LFOREVER is...

Fullscreen is taking the meaning of its name to a whole new level. The multi-channel network has announced its Fullscreen Films initiative, a production-based branch of the McN focused solely on creating feature-length films starring some of today’s most popular digital stars.
Three films are already in production under the Fullscreen Films banner. The first is Rooster Teeth’s Lazer Team. The Austin-based production company initially raised funds for this film on its own via a wildly-successful Indiegogo. It’s likely Fullscreen’s new initiative will help finalize the production plans as well as work on distribution options for Rooster Teeth’s first-ever feature-length film.
Next on Fullscreen’s film slate is a documentary previously announced in June 2014 that features YouTube supergroup Our2ndLife. Though the group has just disbanded its channel, Fullscreen is apparently still moving ahead with the doc titled #O2LForever (quite a nostalgic title, considering the circumstances).
