Warning: Spoilers
The problem with this episode is that the main story falls flat in the end. Basically, all we get in a double cross and ultimate revenge and the latter is dealt with quite briefly.

Cloris Leachman is a definite scene stealer here as Ruth Tennenbaum, an elderly woman widowed and living in an apartment building where Steve and Danny are conducting a stakeout. For the role, she has a mid western Jewish accent which serves her quite well. She throws out some Yiddish favorites "alta cocker" and "tref," old person and non-kosher food, respectively.

The segment begins with Danny and Steve undergoing psychological training as it has been observed that they are too often in conflict. This part was a complete waste, as we know the caliber of officers they are and when the chips are down, they coalesce beautifully.

Heart to Heart

This was one of the best episodes of the show. It had a good flow, action, laughs, cute little subplots with Jerry and the dealer-dude, kick-ass Kono and most of all, it had Danny and Steve being friends and partners and an actual married couple.

The creators often try to pretend otherwise but the McDanno relationship is the heart of the show. You take that away you are left with a half eaten stale bagel. I'm not saying every episode should focus on them as much as this one did. But the carguments, their friendship, the antagonism, their love for each other, those are the salt or the roots the show needs to grow and to taste.

The case was interesting enough and provided little pauses from the therapy session that were Danny and Steve being cooped up in an apartment on a stake out. And those talks, all of them were just brilliant. Some were fun to watch, others were just a thing of beauty. That couch talk about why Steve is not playing guitar anymore was beautifully written, shot and acted. Kudos to Alex and Scott, and kudos to Daniel too. He really did a great job.

I loved how absolutely non-plused they were when Ruth mistaken them for a couple. Well, when I say mistaken, and then Danny suggested they "go with the gay thing to keep their cover". And everyone repeatedly called them married. It might have been just throwing a bone to fans but that is the relationship they have been writing from the start. They love each other and they are married, with the good and the bad.

I also liked Steve with the cat, the return of the therapy session more of that, please, Danny actually doing the homework, seeing Arden Cho, Kono arresting Mia and obviously the ending with the guitar and the car keys.

Episodes like this are the reason why I started to watch H50 again. I hope they keep up the good work.

Good God the bickering couple shtick is way past the freshness date

The constant whining by Williams and the over-the-top masculine reaction by McGarrett is WAY old. It's just lazy writing.

More HPD crash-test dummies
cpotato101019 March 2022
There were a number of positives, the action, personal interactions and the interwoven story lines.

But this one of the many episodes where it looks like no-one properly trained the regular HPD officers in engaging with an armed suspect.

Just roll up, open your car door and get shot down by the suspect. And none of the regulars bat an eye about the number of their fellow officers gunned down.

While too many other shows like this do the same thing, this version of H-50 may be the worst.

It is why, despite the charms of the cast, I have always been a bit ambivalent about watching this show.

The chomping, slapping, and licking by McGarrett
Chiller11719 June 2018
I could not watch this episode properly, I had to keep turning away when McGarrett was stuffing his chops with everything that he could lay his hands on, it is a wonder that he left food for the poor cat.

Seeing the bag of grass, I thought that Ruth Tennenbaum had cooked up a batch of biscuits laced with the stuff... I also thought that McGarrett had eaten them all, it would have explained the way he was shovelling food down his throat.

The only good thing about it was that the poor old lady ended up with some new friends, as long as she did not invite McGarret around for tea.
