A pretty decent show with several bad winners though

Warning: Spoilers
Here we have the "73rd Golden Globe Awards", a television event that ran for slightly for slightly over 2 hours back in early 2016 and honored the best of film and television. The host was once again Ricky Gervais (with his trademark beer), who took over from Poehler/Fey. Well.. what can I say about him as a host. I thought he was amazing. His comments were as provocative as they were funny and it was great to see him really not care at all about what he says. One example would be the comment at Matt Damon (or I should say Ben Affleck) that perfectly summarizes his approach to hosting this event. It was also pretty hilarious how he got fed up with the show more and more the longer it run. His introduction to Morgan Freeman was another highlight. Now about the categories. The show sadly started on a really low note with Kate Winslet (who I usually like) winning for a pretty weak style-over-substance performance. There was a lot of controversy over The Martian being nominated for comedy and with Damon's and the movie's win, it certainly added fuel to the fire. In terms of the quality, I cannot say too much as I have not seen that film yet.

Maybe the worst win of the night was probably Lady Gaga though, which shows that the Globes are an event that loves honoring big names (also musicians) and get them to give a speech. This description also fits Stallone who won his Globe over Rylance, but that's fine as Rylance got the Oscar afterward. Another really really weak moment was the Jennifer Larwrence win. I am certainly biased when it comes to her, but I found it a joke and she is among the most overrated Hollywood has ever seen. Her earlier presentation with Schumer was also as cringeworthy as it gets and I loved Gervais making fun of the two posing as best friends. Helen Mirren's introduction was also on the more embarrassing side. This ceremony gave awards to DiCaprio and Morricone who also both went on to finally win their Oscars. Just like with DiCaprion, his female equivalent Brie Larson swept the awards season last year and I am fine with that. The Revenant really won big here and they carried the AGJ win to Oscar glory, but the Best Picture transition did not work out in the film's favor as the Oscar there went to Spotlight that was shut out at the Globes entirely in terms of wins.

Hungary dominated the Foreign language category that year as well and I cannot share the love for this movie, but Aaron Sorkin's win was a bit surprising probably. One of my favorite (maybe the favorite) win of the night was Bond winning Best Song as it's a great performance by Sam Smith. Inside Out is also an amazing choice as it is a contender for my personal favorite film of the year. Wins for Jon Hamm and Oscar Isaac in the television category made me happy too. The possibly biggest surprise of the night was Mozart in the Jungle triumphing twice over Transparent and I don't mind it at all. Aziz Ansari who provided the biggest cringeworthy fail moment of the night did not expect it either I guess. Happy for Rachel Bloom, not so much for Maura Tierney. Hollywood actor Christian Slater wins his first really big awards of his career. All in all, a decent award show, even if there were major lows in terms of several of the winners. Final thumbs-up for Mel Gibson who was the only one that owned Gervais that night and I am glad to see him back this year with an Oscar nominations. And of course, we are all unworthy in the face of Katy Perry's cleavage and dress. Luckily, she was not only presenting, but also sitting in the front row. What a goddess!

Now that I've had a little time to think about it . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . it seems to me that there's not very much predictive value to the Golden Globe Film Categories as far as correlating with the awarding of the REAL movie prizes--the Golden Oscars--a few weeks later. This year, in fact, the Golden Globes tea leaves were on a par with the accuracy level of all the Polls & Pundits predicting WHOSE moving van would be pulling up to that Moldy White Castle at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. after the U.S. Presidential Election (or not, as Leader Trump says his latest actress\Apprentice First Lady and the rest of the clan prefer the Golden Thrones--that is, toilet seats--in his Manhattan Tower). On a similar note, I'm shocked that none of the movie stars "winning" Globes did not throw these tacky, fragile-looking awards back into host Ricky Gervais' face, since they were now jinxed to lose the coveted Real Prize, the Oscar. With SPOTLIGHT and WHIPLASH mopping up most of the available 2016 Golden Statuettes on Movies' Big Night this year (after being shut out at the Globes), it's surprising that so many luminaries are willing to "go slumming" with the "foreign press" at the Globes, rubbing shoulders with TV people (or worse) while awaiting the results of the Globes' Rigged Election. If there's one thing you can take to the bank, it's that Leader Trump will NEVER allow these Globessodark shenanigans to persist into 2018!

Warning: Spoilers
A very boring show again proving how wrong the predictions were in determining who had won the awards.

It was nice seeing Leonardo DiCaprio and Sylvester Stallone finally winning something.

I really can't stand Ricky Gervais and wish that he would be dropped from the show. He is not funny and besides, he did make anti-Israel statements some years back. He thinks he is funny when it comes to Mel Gibson, but is instead annoying and insensitive to many who watch the program. His reminder of who doesn't like you Mel shall only stir up bitter feelings. His attempt at saying that Mel and I (Gervais) wish you shalom at the end of the evening was ridiculous.

Why aren't any of the nominated songs sung? Taranji P. Henson spoke as if she just came out of the ghetto. Who does she think she is to say that she waited for this for 20 years and therefore she can speak as long as she wants?

Lady Gaga was genuine in her acceptance speech. Sylvester Stallone showed humility as well.

Can people please learn how to pronounce Alejandro González Iñárritu's name correctly?
lee_eisenberg11 January 2016
I had heard that Ricky Gervais was hosting, and so I watched just to see him knock down the celebs a notch or two. Gervais did his stuff, even taking a swipe at Mel Gibson (although I would have introduced Gibson as "Hollywood's favorite Jew-hater").

Out of all the nominees in all the movie categories, the only ones that I had seen were "Carol", "The Hateful Eight", "Mad Max: Fury Road", "Danny Collins", "Trainwreck", "Love and Mercy" and "Ex Machina". Of the TV categories, I've seen scattered episodes of "Mad Men" and "House of Cards", while I've only seen the first two seasons of "American Horror Story". I like to think that Lady Gaga's win made millions of bigots drop dead in horror; I wouldn't call myself a fan of her, but I love how she makes the world's homophobic people go ballistic. I think that there should be categories for horror in the TV categories so that "Grimm" could win something. Hell, "The Big Bang Theory" deserves nominations.

My big pet peeve during the broadcast was the repeated mispronunciations of Alejandro González Iñárritu's name. I recommend that all presenters learn the correct pronunciation (iˈɲaritu). And remember, González is the paternal name, not a middle name, so you can't turn it into an initial.

In the end, I thought that it was an OK way to spend time.
