- The New York Symphony Orchestra is midway through their season and on the surface things are going well: audiences are happy and the musicians are playing better than ever. But offstage, things are beginning to unravel.
- To the outside, Rodrigo's tenure as the new maestro is a roaring success, but the conductor is having doubts. Meanwhile, Hailey works to replace herself as Rodrigo's assistant so she can focus on her new position as substitute in the oboe section. Cynthia meets the orchestra's take-no-prisoners lawyer.
- It's been two and a half months since the opening night of Rodrigo's premiere season, that opening night which was a success albeit not without its obvious problems especially to the audience. Despite his integral role in the success of that night, Thomas has no intentions of assuming the lead role once again even if asked, he instead wanting to focus on his new "career" of composing. Rodrigo, just back from a guest conducting gig in Los Angeles, knows that things with the orchestra are far from perfect musically, and while optimistic publicly, is a little less certain deep in his heart, not only about them as a collective but about himself as maestro. In her new role as an "as need be" oboist for the orchestra, Hailey is looking for a new assistant for the maestro. Although her doing so is more not to compromise her position as now a member of the union - more important as the union and management are under negotiation for a new contract - she also takes into account what happened between her and Rodrigo that opening night. Without saying so, Rodrigo won't let Hailey go as his assistant without a fight. And those contract negotiations may become more contentious as the union has hired a new lawyer, Nina Robertson.—Huggo
