Badland Hunters is the latest film starring action hero Ma Dong-seok, and that is bad news for Korea. He was in Train to Busan in which the country was overrun with zombies, and in Ashfall where a massive volcanic eruption laid waste to the entire Korean Peninsula. And the amount of property damage he wracked up in The Outlaws and its sequels The Roundup and The Roundup: No Way Out would bankrupt most insurance companies.
In the opening scenes, Seoul is levelled by a catastrophic earthquake as the military are about to arrest Yang Gi-su for the murders and human experiments he’s committed trying to bring his daughter back from the dead. The building collapses on him, but you know he’ll be back later in the film.

Horror Director Christopher Smith is getting ready to unleash arachnophobia-inducing horror-comedy madness in Spider Island. The project was announced today by Protagonist Pictures’ CEO Dave Bishop.
Spider Island “follows a group of social media influencers going to the launch party of a new luxury resort on a beautiful island. With deadly spiders.”
The film is written by Christopher Jolley (The Price We Pay) and David Quantick. Vertigo Films will produce the film, and Protagonist Pictures is handling worldwide rights, launching sales ahead of the upcoming American Film Market.
While the specifics behind these lethal spiders remain under wraps, we at least know that they’ll be handled via VFX.
From the press release: “The state-of-the-art VFX will be handled by Automatik VFX, the visual effects studio responsible for the brilliant creature design on Monsters Dark Continent, ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘The Wheel Of Time.’ Seb Barker will serve as VFX supervisor.

Unfortunately, HBO is as good at making fans wait as they are at video game adaptations. As is prestige TV tradition, it’ll be quite some time before we see the second season of The Last of Us. While fans can always replay the first game or wade into major spoiler territory with The Last of Us Part II, you could also opt for some lo-fi post-apocalyptic stories.
Get ready to gasp, cry, and stay up all night reading six brilliant page-turners that are perfect follow-ups to The Last of Us. The end of the world features in a huge amount of novels, but we’ve sifted through bloater-sized mountains of books to find some of the most similar in theme, tone, and sometimes plot.

This week brings the release of M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin, an adaptation of author Paul Tremblay’s The Cabin at the End of the World. The premise sees a vacationing family held hostage by four armed strangers that make harrowing demands under the claimed threat of an apocalypse.
This week also continues HBO’s compelling “The Last of Us,” an apocalyptic series based on the video game. The fourth episode will air this Sunday on HBO and HBO Max. Naturally, it feels apropos to continue the apocalypse theme in this week’s streaming picks.
While horror’s apocalypse starter often falls to zombies, these five apocalyptic movies showcase other means of humanity’s doom, from Gates of Hell to extraterrestrial takeovers.
As always, here’s where you can stream them this week…

It’s hard to believe that Mahershala Ali has never been the lead role in a film before, but Benjamin Cleary’s elegiac “Swan Song” is eager to make up for lost time: Not only does Ali get to play the protagonist in this , he gets to play him twice.
The original Cameron Turner is a sad-eyed illustrator whose inner warmth is only drawn out through the tip of his pencil. In fairness, this movie’s sleek and corner-less vision of the near-future seems like it would make introverts of us all, as Cleary’s debut imagines the day after tomorrow as a place so dominated by wearable tech — specifically membrane-like airpods and contact lens operating systems with UIs that make this Apple Original look as if it’s been adapted from Jony Ive’s wet dreams — that everyone is walled inside their own invisible bubbles, even when they’re...

Halloween is just over a week away, but there’s still enough time to catch up on your favorite zombie content. From “The Walking Dead” to “Army of the Dead,” and even the popular “Resident Evil” gaming franchise, zombies are huge right now, and we’re not just talking about popular movies and TV shows.
The Center for Disease Control created an online campaign to make sure that you’re prepared in the event of a zombie apocalypse (as if a global pandemic wasn’t scary enough). Elsewhere on the internet, anti-vaxxers have been using films like “I Am Legend” (which you can stream on HBO Max) to spread false conspiracy theories about the covid vaccine.

Time and time again during this year’s pandemic, movie studios have had to make the best of a bad situation. HBO Max’s list of new releases for December 2020 comes along with the most extreme example yet.
WarnerMedia undoubtedly had big plans for Wonder Woman 1984 when it scheduled it for a holiday release last year. After moving it to the summer, however, the conglomerate had to delay its theatrical release time and time again. Now HBO Max is the lucky winner of the saga, as it gets to premiere the long-awaited sequel on its servers on Dec. 25.
While Wonder Woman 1984 is definitely the headline this month, there are some other intriguing streaming options for HBO Max in December. The month plays host to a whole host of high-powered documentaries like Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults (Dec. 3), Alabama Snake (Dec. 9), and the Tiger Woods documentary Tiger (Dec.

“House of the Dragon,” HBO’s upcoming prequel to “Game of Thrones,” has acquired one of its leading men. Paddy Considine, who starred in HBO’s “The Outsider” and “The Third Day,” will portray King Viserys Targaryen in the upcoming series.
HBO’s description for Considine’s character reads:
Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy, but as we’ve learned from “Game of Thrones,” good men do not necessarily make for great kings.
“House of the Dragon” was announced by HBO in November 2019. The 10-episode prequel series is co-created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, who executive produce alongside Miguel Sapochnik, Vince Gerardis, and Sara Lee Hess. Sapochnik will direct the pilot and a handful of other episodes.

Next month, Netflix is rolling out a ton of great new Halloween-themed content, including a bunch of must-see originals like The Haunting of Bly Manor, A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting and Rebecca. Unfortunately, though, it’s also losing a lot of horror films in October that would’ve made for perfect seasonal viewing.
On October 2nd, both Cult of Chucky – the last Chucky flick before the reboot – and Truth or Dare – that’s the 2017 TV movie, not the 2018 Blumhouse production – are being removed from Netflix’s library. The bulk of the horror titles leaving in October are, ironically, being removed on October 31st, though. So, if you’re hoping to do an Underworld marathon this Halloween or rewatch classics like Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow or The Silence of the Lambs, make sure you don’t leave it until the day itself.

Ever since George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead shuffled onto the scene and revolutionized the zombie movie in 1968, humans fighting off hordes of the undead has firmly remained one of horror’s most popular sub-genres for over half a century. Of course, there have been numerous twists put on the formula over the decades, but the basic setup always tends to remain the same, and yet audiences can never seem to get enough of it.
Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later and Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake popularized the sprinting zombie, adding another new caveat that countless filmmakers repurposed again and again, but truly original titles are very difficult to come by these days. Although, there have been some low budget efforts thrown together in a matter of weeks to capitalize on current events.

Lionsgate UK has launched a new trailer for ‘Summerland’ starring Gemma Arterton.
The film follows the story of fiercely independent folklore investigator, Alice (Gemma Arterton) who secludes herself in her clifftop study, debunking myths using science to disprove the existence of other-worldly forces and magic. Consumed by her work, but also profoundly lonely, she is haunted by a love affair from her past.
When spirited young Frank, an evacuee from the London Blitz, is dumped into her irritable care, his innocence and wonder unlock deeply buried and painful secrets in Alice’s past and make her re-evaluate what it really means to free your imagination. Bravely embracing life’s miraculous unpredictability, Alice learns that wounds may be healed, hope and second chances do exist, and any woman must defiantly be two things: who and what she wants.

Another month, another slew of new content headed to Netflix.
And while 2020 has fast become one of the most troubling and downright overwhelming years in recent memory (spoilers: there are still eight months left), the Internet’s biggest platforms are still pumping out fresh material to ease the pain of social distancing.
Self-isolation is by no means easy, but there’s a camaraderie to be found online. For instance, Netflix Party is a Google Chrome extension that allows you and your friends/family to stream a movie or TV show simultaneously. It doesn’t always work seamlessly, but it’s still a fun feature to encourage communication during the Coronavirus lockdown.
And with a fresh batch of new content being added to Netflix today, April 1st, there are five films in particular that will surely stir up conversation. As spotted by Dread Central, new horror-thrillers include Mortal Kombat (1995), Killer Klowns From Outer Space...

Netflix has confirmed that 58 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in April. Now that we’re self-isolating at home to help defeat the Covid-19 pandemic, this may be the perfect opportunity to catch up on things that have been in our Netflix watchlist for a long while.
The novel coronavirus, a mutated strand from the family of coronaviruses, originated from Wuhan, China late last year, but currently, every single country in the world is battling the outbreak. As of now, more than 714,000 people have contracted the disease and 33,617 have passed away due to severe cases of acute respiratory syndrome. In the Us alone, more than 139,000 patients have been identified and approximately 158 million people are under lockdown across all 50 states. While the ramifications of the Covid-19 may have dealt the world of economics an unprecedented blow, business models like Netflix have profited from people spending more time at home with little to do.

On the eve of March 24th, when Disney+ is expected to expand across the United Kingdom and various parts of Europe, we have compiled the definitive list of new content headed to the streaming platform and its three key competitors – namely Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu.
Yes, the so-called ‘streaming wars’ is now being fought on four fronts, and it’s fair to say that, despite being the fresh-faced newcomer, Disney+ is packing serious firepower. Thanks to its carefully calculated acquisitions over the years, the newly-released streaming service is packed to the rafters with top-tier content, including some excellent original series like The Mandalorian.
It’ll also get updated in a few days’ time (as is tradition), what with April 2020 just around the corner. Plus, with countries all over the globe enforcing measures to combat Coronavirus – self-isolation, social distancing… you name it – the Internet’s biggest streaming services will no...

Thankfully it looks like Netflix is going to ease our social isolation with some easy-watching originals, and a handful of fun original and existing movie options. “Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror” begins with a modest proposal: “Black history is black horror.” It’s a succinct and provocative notion, the idea that there’s a symbiotic relationship between the horror genre and the African-American experience. However, executive producer Tananarive Due said that to her eyes, the two are inextricably linked.
“We were brought here in bondage, and white supremacy continues to mischaracterize and marginalize us,” said Due, a scholar, and novelist who specializes in the supernatural genre. “As the parent of a teenage son who’s already six feet tall, I’m fearful about his future encounters with police and the ways in which black children just like him are assumed on sight to be thugs and less than fully human.”
Due describes that fear and uncertainty as an example of an unrelenting horror that explains why creatives of African descent like herself, gravitate toward...

About ten years ago, give or take, the Ya adaptation movement was beginning with the Twilight phenomena sweeping the globe. It was Stephanie Meyer’s books that gave a new pulse to the fiction sub-genre and Hollywood took notice. Within a few years, a plethora of novels were optioned into movies, notably The Hunger Games and Divergent, and the cash registers went into overdrive with studios being handsomely rewarded for their investments and risks.
Then, suddenly, the bubble burst – those who had championed the franchises had become adults and those coming of age found their attentions turning to other things. The Divergent series didn’t even get to finish its run with part three, Allegiant, tanking at the box office and part four still in limbo but we can safely assume that we won’t see it anytime soon. "What happens next?" 20th Century Fox has debuted another new trailer for their superpowers movie The Darkest Minds, in theaters in August. Finally they're putting out footage that really makes this look good, instead of looking like just another Ya movie for teens. The best trailer yet for this movie - worth a watch. The Darkest Minds is set just after a disease kills 98% of America's children, and the surviving 2% develop superpowers and are then placed in camps. A 16-year-old girl escapes and joins a group of other teens on the run. This stars Amandla Stenberg, Mandy Moore, Harris Dickinson, Wallace Langham, Golden Brooks, Mark O'Brien, Patrick Gibson, and Gwendoline Christie. Here's the latest trailer (+ UK poster) for Jennifer Yuh Nelson's The Darkest Minds,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Sensitive drama about traumatic brain injury, featuring an extraordinary performance by Paddy Considine and much brutal honesty about men’s inability to deal with their own emotions. I’m “biast” (pro): love Paddy Considine and Jodie Whittaker
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

I’m gonna take your head off!” “It’s gonna be a life-changer for you!” This is the trash talk boxer Matty Burton (Paddy Considine: The Death of Stalin, Miss You Already) cheerfully listens to from his opponent, Andre “The Future” Bryte (Anthony Welsh: The Death of Stalin, The Girl with All the Gifts, Starred Up), at the press conference before their match, in which Matty will defend his world middleweight boxing championship. And then all that bluster actually comes to pass when,...

"The more that I try to control it, the more damage that I do..." 20th Century Fox has unveiled the first trailer for a superpowers movie titled The Darkest Minds, the live-action debut of Kung Fu Panda 2 & 3 director Jennifer Yuh Nelson. "From the producers of 'Stranger Things' and Arrival comes the latest Ya survival thriller," based on the novel by Alexandra Bracken. Here's what this series is about: after a disease kills 98% of America's children, the surviving 2% develop superpowers and are placed in internment camps. A 16-year-old girl escapes her camp and joins a group of other teens on the run from the government. This stars Amandla Stenberg (from The Hunger Games + Everything, Everything), Mandy Moore, Harris Dickinson, Wallace Langham, Golden Brooks, Mark O'Brien, Patrick Gibson, and Gwendoline Christie. This looks very Ya, but it looks cool, dare I say. A mix of Chronicle and The Girl with All the Gifts.
