Not COMPLETELY terrible
slevine2926 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The issue most people have with this episode is Derek's manner of death. The writing was mediocre, but the overall episode was just ok. The problem is Derek's death was incredibly hard to watch as the way he was killed was not something tbT he would normally do. As a full fledged fan, I know Patrick Dempsey and Shonda Rhimes did not get along which explains why she killed him off the way she did.

It was also very frustrating that Meredith did not call Derek's family. In the very first season Derek told Meredith if he was ever on life support, he'd want his family there.

Its not a total waste of time, but if you're attached to Derek, be prepared to be angry at Rhines.

Writing was bad

Warning: Spoilers
I'm confused at why some of you people are going to such extremes over this episode, I'm puzzled. I actually don't mind at all that Derek was killed off, should've been a long time ago. I just wish the storyline was more thought out with this episode. It was a little unrealistic. I think that the writers were slacking on this episode. I am impressed that they finally had the balls to kill Derek off though. Nobody is exempt which is what I do love about the show. Now if only Shonda can bring back Izzy and Addison in some way I would be overjoyed. I'm really anxious to see how the next season will play out now. Since a year has passed I'm wondering if Meredith will be dating now.

Well written, Heart breaking... How could you?...
Olechkin24 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I liked the episode and at the same time I did not. How and WHY could you kill Derek??? I am so much AGREE with all those disappointed fans. What? Was this a logical ending for this character or was this something else? Patrick's post show statement of "Oh this is where it's going to go" does not say anything to me. Does it to you??? I also wonder why Meredith never hugged him when turning the switches off? I understand that she is a surgeon but she loved him! How could she let IT go without a last hug?

On the other couple of notes: 1) Even tho it does not make things prettier, at least Derek died like a real surgeon. 2) That's why I never wanted to be a doctor. Even a small mistake will cost you someone's life :( I do believe that you must have a talent to be a doctor.

A terrible experience
andy-alexander_7718 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Setting all feelings aside, I believe the episode managed to transmit the pain of losing the long-time favorite Dr. Shepherd. I think the idea behind his quick and non-elaborate death was to pass on exactly this feeling: that he was not done yet; he shouldn't have died. Not like that. But the truth is, life is unpredictable. And so was the event that took place here. I wish it didn't, but it did. And I believe it was a fine example of manipulating feelings after 10+ years of loving a character. I believe everyone recalls the death of Dr. Sloan. There was an entire episode dedicated to it. So I doubt the writers couldn't have done it so themselves. I believe the chose not to. Because they wanted to transmit something completely different. And abrupt loss that demands compensation. Whether we'll get that, is still to be seen... I apologize if any 'hurt' viewers disagree with me :D

Poor writing
jamiewright-5538723 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Over the course of watching Grey's Anatomy from the start, there have been a few sloppy episodes with poor writing and poor acting, that can be expected from a TV shows and as it goes on it can sometimes get worse. This episode is by far the worst of them all and that isn't being over-dramatic either. The writing and script for this episode is very disgusting and so unrealistic it shouldn't have been aired at all. Stopping in the middle of the road, (someone who is revered as one of the most intelligent neurosurgeons in the world wouldn't do something so stupid!) getting a phone call right at the end when the whole episode he had no reception but he suddenly gets a call, a semi comes flying around the corner and slams into him YET THE WHOLE TIME while on-scene there was NO traffic at all whatsoever, Meredith didn't call Amelia or any of Derek's family when she went to pull the plug? There are so many flaws with this episode is it clearly evident that Shonda does not care about Grey's Anatomy anymore. I love this show so much and I am so heartbroken with what happened. I would never rate anything such a low rating ever, but the fact that Derek was killed off this way with such crappy writing and moronic logic, I think this rating is more than justified.

Oh man..
cashterriquez248 February 2021
As I sit here having just watched this episode, I have to be honest, after reading the previous reviews and seeing it's score, I didn't know what to expect. No, it wasn't perfect, and yes there were inconsistencies, but it doesn't detract from the impact this episode had. I am currently watching every episode (for the first time) and I have to be honest, this one hurt. It's very difficult to watch all of our "Day Ones" leave us that's for sure. I'm really not sure where we go from here...

Unthoughtful Writing.
OGmacadamia392 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, out of all the character write offs this show has had to pull off this was by far the worst. Looking at the fact that Derek is one of the shows most captivating characters, the story line makes zero sense.

As many other users have pointed out, the cell phone thing is ridiculous. The entire time he can't use his phone, then magically he gets a telephone call as he's leaving the scene, puts his car parallel on a curve as he tries to reach for it? Give me a break- there were so many better ways for him to have been injured. Losing him to the show was hard, but losing him to the show with such horrific writing was much worse.

And one of the things that actually bothers me the most?- There is ZERO way that Meredith wouldn't have called Christina, or that Christina wouldn't have shown up. Obviously Sandra is off the show, but I could think of a million ways they could have at least brought her in for a phone call. Missing that made the show story line feel empty. Meredith loses her 'person' and her female counterpart 'person' doesn't even get a phone call? Give me a break. I think Sandra having been invested for a decade to the show would have agreed that a cameo would make sense. Ugh. That really got to me. lol.

And why didn't Meredith call ANYONE for that matter? Derek's sisters? Addison? Richard? Alex?- Anyone. It wasn't in Meredith's character to just shut off.

This was the worst send off for Patrick and part of me wonders if Shonda was so angry with him for wanting to leave, that she intentionally put zero effort into supporting a well written ending. #fail.

Don't look at the score
Bestie56326 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is outstanding. There are reviews on this page that would lead you to believe otherwise but those reviews truly show how good this episode is. This episode was designed to emotional destroy the viewers. By God did it do its job. He's gone, he's not coming back. That's it. So yes, the show has killed off arguably the most popular character and everyone is distraught. Do not however take this out on the writers. This is not a "poorly written episode" it is a fantastic tribute to one of the finest TV Doctors of all time. It starts with Derek, saving 4 crash victims in a very 'McDreamy' fashion. Then he becomes the victim of an accident himself and due to a poorly trained trauma department in the nearest hospital, he doesn't make it and leaves Meredith to pick up the pieces. Just because an episode makes you sad does not make it bad. No, this is not a 4 star episode. Yes this is a 10 star episode.

THE single worst episode in 11 seasons
k_klimasko28 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This was the laziest and sloppiest written episode of Grey's Anatomy. No cars come down the road for hours then suddenly as Derek is getting ready to leave a giant truck comes? Nobody ever has cell reception in that area but as Derek is leaving he gets a phone call?

I understand that Dempsey wanted to leave the show and end his contract early but his character and the show did not deserve for Derek Shepherd to exit in that manner. The show has been far from realistic for years but it is simply outrageous to think that a man who survived a gunshot wound near his heart and a plane crash would then die in a car accident after saving four people.

If you haven't started the series yet, don't bother. The main character's love interest dies and so does the show.

Moving and Heartbreaking. A fitting send off for a beloved character.
Original_Acrobat8 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Sadly, Patrick Dempsy made the decision to leave Grey's Anatomy after a messy personal divorce. He felt he could no longer dedicate himself to the show, thus his major absence in season 11.

Derek Shepherd went out in such a terrible way, those doctors really dropped the ball and so Meri had to say goodbye to the man she loved. At least he saved lives before he died. It sucked because it was so real. A sudden truck on a back road, that happens too many times where I have grown up in a rural area. It is heartbreaking and shows that these small hospitals lack the the real training they truly need.

It's sad to see him go.

Unacceptable Poor Writing - SPOILER ALERT!
aaronredis18 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Where do I even begin? This whole episode was complete garbage. Compare this to all other episodes with an actors departure. This one is just shameful. No, not BECAUSE Derek dies, but because of how they killed him off. What a horrendous exit! This is one of the worst episodes of television I have ever seen in my life. Terrible writing. It was heartbreaking to watch, I must admit. It could have ended so much better, though. I think Derek deserved a much better exit. What, he reaches for a phone that did not have cellular reception the whole episode and a freakin' semi comes rolling along on a road that had literally NO traffic during the course of the episode? Then he is taken to a hospital filled with doctors that have no idea what they are doing -- completely clueless idiots running around with scalpels? Then Meredith arrives and removes him from life support in the ABSENCE of his family -- without anyone else knowing? THAT is how he dies? I do not apologize for the poor rating. I think it is very reasonable considering this was such a foolish way to kill off someone. It was so rushed and poorly written, it is repulsive.

A well-done character exit
thenomedworshipers31 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Alright, I get why so many fans got mad at this episode, but what was the crew supposed to do? For those of you who don't know the backstory, Patrick Dempsey, the actor for Derek, displayed diva behavior on set that escalated to the point where he was suspended (which is why his character left the show for a bit). He was brought back, but his attitude had gotten worse, to the point where he had to be written off the show. I agree that it was a little insulting for a major character to be killed off and not even in a season finale, but it was for the well-being of the cast. If they had written him off the show without killing him, that would've just meant ruining the sentiment of Meredith and Derek's relationship. Overall, yes I see why everybody was upset, but the episode managed to be very well handled and in my opinion an excellent send-off to Derek Shepherd.

It was hard to find words...
bffever8203 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I waited a while to post this review because I needed to overcome the initial anger that would have completely overshadowed my point. A disclaimer, this review is entirely a matter of opinion. That being said, I have been watching Grey's since it first aired, and although I am upset with its creator for the events of this episode, I am not going to completely bash her in this review. After all, she is the mastermind behind this show that's causing the viewers so much grief. If anything, I offer congratulations to Shonda Rhimes because it takes immense skill to produce a show that can have viewers so attached to its characters. On the flip-side, overall with this episode, I was disappointed; Completely and utterly disappointed. I've had a week to absorb the death of a man is arguably my favorite on screen characters of all time. To put it bluntly, I sobbed. A lot. From a purely cinematic standpoint, I thought that Patrick Dempsey showed some great acting during the first part of the episode that really captured the essence of Derek Shepard. Subsequently, Ellen Pompeo's acting, particularly in the scene where she yells at the doctor about approaching her with the papers to remove her husband from life support, moved me to tears. I've heard criticism that she didn't show enough emotion through her husband's death. I respectfully disagree. Through the show, Meredith Grey has seen many deaths, and with one so sudden, it's reasonable that she would be shell shocked. Stage one of grief is denial. It didn't help that they played chasing cars during the pivotal scene. That absolutely crushed my heart. It was the second part of the episode that disappointed me. The character death that affected me the most in Grey's up to this point was that of George O'Malley. However, as he should have, George died a heroic death, and his death scene left viewers with a sense of respect, admiration, and grief. Meanwhile, McDreamy was hit by a Semi-Truck while he stopped his car in the middle of the road to reach for his cell phone that was suddenly ringing in an area that had previously been proved to have no cellular reception. I thought that it was disappointing that Derek was represented in such a careless manner to be reaching for his phone, stopping in the middle of the road. He is a brain surgeon. That was upsetting. Second, while the message about the low quality of medical care was received, it was disappointing and extremely maddening that a neurosurgeon died in the O.R because of a lack of skill and motivation on the part of the doctors that were supposed to save his life. It also bothered me that the doctors themselves for the most part carried an air of entitlement and arrogance until his death. I couldn't decide whether to be baffled by the writer's subtle ingenuity or to cry out in rage and sob in front of the television. At the time, I chose the latter. Another aspect of this episode that upset me and the other fans, was how Meredith didn't contact anyone before choosing to release Derek from life-support, even to just let his family say their last goodbyes. I do hope that is addressed in a later episode even if only to clear up if there was some reasoning behind that. Overall though, while the episode itself was not terrible, in fact it kept me captivated for the entire hour, I am still disappointed by the end of Dr. Derek Shepard, and still grieving, fictional or not. He deserved a better end. Rest in Peace McDreamy.

Great episode but....
julieact10 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of my favorite episodes of the series! It is one of the saddest also. I love Patrick Dempsey so losing him from this show is an incredible loss. I'm so heartbroken for Meredith but this has been a great example of what Ellen Pompeo is capable of as an actress. It had many twists and turns and was not a cookie cutter storyline by any means. I have a good track record of seeing what's coming and this had me surprised!!! I'm sad to see one of my favorite fictional couples end in such a tragic way. I'm sure this will lead to interesting storytelling but I'm going to miss Derek Shepherd.

Shonda Rhimes was asleep at the wheel
TylenL1 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Listen, I think his death would've been fine if it made sense but it just didn't. There wasn't a single vehicle that drove by during the accident but the as soon as everyone left and was saved he pulls out and a semi comes out of no where and t bones him??? Wtf is a semi even doing there? How didn't neither of them see each other? Or attempt to get out of the way? Was there nothing notifying vehicles of an emergency up ahead? Did the semi not see the ambulances pass by? Wouldn't he slow down?? Why would Derek stop his vehicle smack dab in the middle of both lanes? It wasn't the fact that he died it's HOW he died. Sloppy writing.

Warning: Spoilers
I see a lot of people didn't like this episode - and I didn't either, but not for the same reasons, this one is so hard to watch (even a second time - am rewatching the series) breaks my heart... there is no other way the show could have handled this exit - it's a 9 for how much it hurt, so the episode accomplished that (I want to give it a 1 for how much I hate that it did it so well and made me feel and took away)

Warning: Spoilers
I have just watched this episode, it has got to be the worst I have seen, I think that when this season ends next week I won't be watching any-more. Shonda you have completely lost the plot I'm afraid. Killing Derek off will be the downfall of this largely fantastic show, it's a shame the whole show couldn't have been wound up some way with all the remaining characters still intact, how can a show that has revolved around the love affair between Derek and Meredith right from the start, continue? I don't think that Meredith would have switched the life support off without telling Derek's family, she can be a bit heartless at times but not over this. Very badly thought out.

One of my favorite episodes
bonesbaby3328 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Grey's is such a rewatchable show. A lot of tragic episodes that make for fantastic TV because they make you cry your heart out. This episode is one of the few guaranteed to make me cry every single time I watch it. Derek dies an absolute hero. He dies in such a gutwrenchingly tragic way, an avoidable way. And you don't want him to go, not when he and Meredith are in such a happy place. But he is dead. And you're walking on the treadmill crying because this episode makes you cry every time and you are stupid because you got on the treadmill knowing you would be watching this episode next.

Those who gave this episode 1 star, 2 stars...are just mad because Derek is dead. This episode is actually a fantastic tribute to a beloved character.

No good actors left
zoerigho29 April 2015
This used to be a great show. I remember I started watching it by accident at the gym. And I got stuck. The same way I had got stuck on ER at the beginning. Back then, when some good actors were playing. Burk was a good actor. George was a good actor. Izzy was a great actress. Lexie too! What to say about Christina! Or Teddy, the best actress ever on the show. Now we are left with poor, untalented Jo and the unbearable Owen. Not to mention Aimilia. The three of them are trying to act in a realistic way, but their acting is like a third rate movie's. What a pity! We'll stop watching this after 10 years. It should have ended 2-3 years before, I think.

Poorly Handled
kowalski-penguin992 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was such a gross mischaracterization of Derek Shepherd's character. I'm so immensely angry at how his death was handled, and it was all due to drama behind the scenes. Derek deserved to be handled far better than this, and him and Meredith deserved a better end. It's no secret how important Derek was to this show, and to have him discarded like trash is truly upsetting. I knew about his death even before starting the show, and was waiting this whole time to see how it was pulled off... only to finally get there and be met with a poorly written, half-baked, insultingly put together episode. Tragic, really. Hoping the show stays okay after this.

People are not going to like it, MAJOR POILERS
ammabee-956-92704324 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
But, I think it was kinda perfect. THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW, BUT IF YOU SAW THE ADS, YOU KNOW. *INSERT NAME HERE* died like a true hero. Also, the fact Shonda had the guts to even do that is why she's Shonda and is realistic, let's be real... If she didn't kill him, we'd complain that if it was a smaller character she would, and it's unrealistic. I'm glad she killed him, rather than what she did with Izzie and just made him leave. I feel as if after this Grey's farewell season will be season 12 (which I believe is just perfect for a loyal fan.) People are going to complain about it, but why? Besides a few *questionable* effects (such as right before he crashed, the driving scene was pretty bad effected. And was a TAD over dramatic but that's the actors fault. The car explosion also was bad.) This may be a sign Grey's is going too overdramatic, but assuming it ends next season... I believe this is great. ACTING - 9/10 SCRIPT - 9/10 PLOT - 10/10 OVERALL - 9.5/10 (EST. 9/10)

It's the characters, damn it!
chetanbhasin79 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I loved Grey's Anatomy. A part of me still does. It's not because of the drama. It's because of the characters.

Creators of this show have done a remarkable job presenting characters with a great attention to detail. So much so that you can fall in love with them. Once, however, you do that characters no longer exist. It seems as if the makers of the show have no regard for the great work they have done.

Perhaps I'm just angry at this episode for killing off Mc. Dreamy. Or maybe it's something else.

Turn by turn, several characters have been taken off the set of this show. Characters who were important. Characters with whom we had fallen in love.

amlandis8117 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I agree with most people about how he died and how stupid it was. The cell phone working, the truck not being able to slow down when there was plenty of road to do so before he hit Derek. But I think the worst part of this episode was watching Penny rely on Meredith for emotional support minutes before she has to unplug her husband. Come on penny. You don't talk to an almost widow the way you did and expect her to help YOU get through what happened. "What if I'm not good enough?" Gahhhh.
