Plot: The life and career of Gene Wilder are remembered by his friends and colleagues.
Review: Gene Wilder was a one-of-a-kind talent. While it seems like he’s mostly remembered these days for playing Willy Wonka (with his performance inspiring Timothee Chalamet’s recent take), there was a lot more to him than just that one film. For one thing, his cinematic partnership with Mel Brooks resulted in three all-time classics: The Producers, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. Plus, he and Richard Pryor made an iconic mismatched duo in a slew of films (some better than others), while Wilder directed several highly successful films on his own.
In this loving tribute to the late icon, director Ron Frank pulls back the curtain to dip into both Wilder’s creative process and sometimes tragic life. Pulling from an audiobook he recorded of his memoirs, the film is distinguished because Wilder himself tells much of the story.

Mel Brooks’s Young Frankenstein, co-written with Gene Wilder (seen here with Marty Feldman and Teri Garr) inspired Tony McNamara’s screenplay adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s novel for Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things (Oscar wins for Emma Stone and costume designer Holly Waddington).
By using well-chosen excerpts from the audiobook of Gene Wilder’s autobiography, Kiss Me Like A Stranger, Ron Frank lets Wilder himself guide us through the documentary, by positioning him in dialogue with many friends and colleagues assembled here, most prominently Mel Brooks, who directed Wilder in a number of groundbreaking movies. We find out how the two met, because Anne Bancroft, starring at the time on stage in Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage (with Wilder as the Chaplain), was dating Brooks, who was looking for an actor to play Leo Bloom in what was to become The Producers. Comedy actor and writer Gene Wilder is to be celebrated in documentary Remembering Gene Wilder, and here’s the trailer.
To several generations, Gene Wilder will forever be known as the definitive screen version of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka in 1971 film Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory. To others, he might be best known for his frequent collaborations with comedian Richard Pryor in films like Silver Streak, Stir Crazy, See No Evil, Hear No Evil and Another You.

SAG-AFTRA and AI voice technology company Replica Studios introduced an AI voice agreement on the opening day of CES, where AI is a defining subject at the Las Vegas confab.
According to SAG-AFTRA, the agreement allows its members to “safely explore new employment opportunities for their digital voice replicas with industry-leading protections tailored to AI technology, allowing Aaa video game studios and other companies working with Replica to access top SAG-AFTRA talent.” According to the Guild, this covers licensed voices “in video game development and other interactive media projects from pre-production to final release.”
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, national exec director and chief negotiator for SAG-AFTRA, said the agreement contains “evolution improvements” such as safe storage to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers agreement. AI was a pivotal issue in resolving its recent strike with AMPTP, which represents Hollywood producers.

“Ferris Bueller may take a day off, but Matthew Broderick does not,” the two-time Tony winner vows upon his arrival in Tuesday’s Only Murders in the Building.
The stage veteran makes a meal out of his brief stint at the Arconia, playing a heightened (read: extremely pompous) version of himself in Episode 7. “I had worked with Matthew years ago [on the 2003 movie Good Boy], and he was a natural fit for this show,” series co-creator John Hoffman tells TVLine. Plus, Broderick’s Producers pal was already a member of the Only Murders comedy troupe.

"Only Murders in the Building" season 3 has a few songs in its heart. A musical theatre aficionado will have a ball with season 3 of "Only Murders in the Building," thanks to Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) converting his outlandish murder-mystery play "Death Rattle" into a musical.
While the trio are solving yet another murder, this season is brimming with musical references. In season 3, episode 2, a recuperating Putnam hallucinates his loved ones performing a pastiche of "There'll Be Some Changes Made" from the Bob Fosse-directed "All That Jazz." It's a cutting reference because said musical film, especially this particular number, metatextually tackles the director's heart attack. It deals with mortal self-flagellation, both for Fosse and in-universe for Fosse's fictional avatar.
In contrast, the show also applies a more lighthearted reference to "The Producers" that complements Oliver's pursuits. After a falling out with his friend Charles Haden-Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver needs a replacement for the Investigator.

Couple who kill a man for harassing them in the pub are pursued by an army of his father’s goons. A few sparky performances can’t redeem this cartoonish thriller
One might start to wonder if the career of British writer-director Savvas D Michael (previously responsible for The Bezonians) may be propelled, like the scam in The Producers, by a deliberate intention to make crap movies for an investment write-off. Anything is possible in the wild and wonderful world of the film business. The only other explanation is that Michael thinks the laddish, nihilistically violent and yet not in the slightest bit amusing quasi-cartoon world he’s created in Hitman is entertaining. Could anyone be that deluded?
Hitmen’s inciting incident occurs when a bickering couple, office administrator Luke (Daniel Caltagirone) and estate agent Lauren are harassed in a pub by a drunken visiting American (Max Lohan) who is trying pick up Lauren.

During an interview with ABC News, Brooks spoke about his first date with Bancroft. He admits she gave him $20 under the table because he couldn’t afford to pay for the meal.
“I didn’t have any money, and I was dating Anne Bancroft,” Brooks tells interviewer George Stephanopoulos. “She was on Broadway and The Miracle Worker. We were at a Chinese restaurant one night, and I said, ‘I’m broke.’ She slipped me a $20 bill under the table. And the bill came up to $14 or $15. It wasn’t that expensive.

History of the World, Part I is far from the most beloved Mel Brooks movie, even if “It’s good to be the king” is one of the more enduring lines he ever wrote. It is, however, by far the most in need of a sequel. After all, it’s been 42 years since Brooks concluded the film with teasers for History of the World, Part II, which was to include the sketches “Hitler on Ice,” “A Viking Funeral,” and, most memorably, “Jews in Space.” Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein are stone-cold classics,...

Brendan Fraser has been the Best Actor Oscar frontrunner the entire season for his performance in “The Whale” and remains the odds-on favorite to win. On the surface, this doesn’t seem surprising — it’s a baity, transformative turn — but anyone following this closely knows that his chances took a hit when “The Whale” was snubbed in Best Picture. If Fraser does take home the gold, he’ll be one of the few and far between Best Actor champs for a non-Best Picture nominee and the first in 13 years.
The most recent one was Jeff Bridges, who prevailed for “Crazy Heart” (2009) in the first year of the expanded Best Picture lineup. Ann Sarnoff, who has held a top film and TV studio role at WarnerMedia for nearly three years, is departing the company as it gets set to merge with Discovery.
News of her exit spread quickly Tuesday and then was confirmed in a press release. It will take effect upon the close of the 43 billion merger, which is something of a moving target but getting closer to becoming reality. Who cares about the Oscars? That is the overriding question as the Academy struggles to lure viewers under pressure from broadcaster ABC. Many Academy members seem disengaged from the viewing and voting process; will global movie fans flock to the March 27 broadcast hosted by Amy Schumer, Regina Hall, and Wanda Sykes, with performances from Billie Eilish and Beyoncé? First-time Oscars producer Will Packer promises an accessibly entertaining show with an out-of-the-box presenters’ lineup that includes Tony Hawk and Shaun White — and after Steven Soderbergh’s pandemic 2021 Oscar show, there is nowhere to go but up.

The final voting for Sunday’s 94th Oscars has closed. What can we expect?
A two-year global pandemic, which is still in progress, changed the mindset of humankind, and the Hollywood industry. The awards season seemed to be back on track but just prior to the holiday break, events were being postponed, and a familiar dark passenger started showing its face once again, under different name variants.
It’s no secret that Oscar voters have been looking for a good mood. After the nominations were announced on Feb. 8, where Netflix’s “The Power of the Dog” led the charge with 12, it looked as though the streaming giant had finally arrived at its golden moment with the Academy after falling short with previous films like “Roma” (2018) and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (2020).

Apple Studios emerged the big winner of what some say is an important Oscar precursor on Saturday night, as “Coda” took the top film prize at the annual Producers Guild Awards.
What began as a Sundance sales sensation directed by Sian Heder — the heart-tugging story following the only hearing family member in a tribe of charismatic New England fishermen — won the Darryl F. Zanuck award for best motion picture producing. Other notable film winners at Los Angeles’ Fairmont Hotel were Questlove’s “Summer of Soul” for documentary feature, and the musical juggernaut “Encanto” for best producers of an animated film.
“Succession” took home the Norman Felton Award for outstanding episodic drama. Apple’s “Ted Lasso” continued its trophy collection spree by claiming the Danny Thomas Award for outstanding television comedy. HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” won the David L. Wolper award for outstanding producer of a limited series.

“Mare of Easttown” premiered on HBO last April and immediately had viewers hooked on the small town murder mystery led by Kate Winslet. Critics lauded the limited series and it went on to receive 16 Primetime Emmy nominations, winning Best Actress for Winslet, Best Supporting Actor for Evan Peters and Best Supporting Actress for Julianne Nicholson. For executive producer Mark Roybal, it was the title character of the project that made him want to become involved. Watch the full interview with the PGA Awards nominee above.
“Brad [Ingelsby] sent me the script of the pilot and I just responded to the character of Mare,” Roybal tells Gold Derby in our “Meet the Experts” panel for Producers Guild Awards nominees. “She was tough, but she was also incredibly injured. By the end of the pilot I didn’t know what was going to happen to her, but I wanted to know if she was going to be okay.

We Are Movie Geeks’ own Jim Batts will be hosting a screening of one of his favorite films. It’s Mel Brooks’ classic comedy Young Frankenstein from 1974. The screening will beMonday October 4th at the Buder branch of the St. Louis Library. Showtime is 1:30pm and it’s a Free event. Jim will introduce the film and host a post-discussion about it afterwards. Don’t miss it!
Good comedies are rare. Great ones are rarer. Great parodies are needles in the haystack, and this is it. The parody can be brilliantly funny (most are horrid), but Young Frankenstein is near perfect.
Mel Brooks hit all nails right on the head in his black & white classic from 1974. Taking its themes from the Mary Shelley novel and providing some spot-on homage/parody to the James Whale classic Bride Of Frankenstein (and plenty...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Queer Disney fans raised a rainbow flag in 2017 when it was revealed that in the Bill Condon-directed live-action adaptation of the animated hit “Beauty and the Beast,” LeFou — played by Josh Gad — was gay. Now the big question is, will LeFou be gay in the upcoming “Beauty and the Beast” Disney Plus series? That project revolves around the friendship between LeFou and Gaston (Luke Evans). More specifically, because it’s a prequel, will a storyline include LeFou’s coming-out journey?
“You’re going to have to tune in when this show airs to see what we’re working up, but in the process of working on it, we’re asking ourselves every relevant question about these characters and endeavoring to do right by them and by this world,” Gad says on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast.

On March 24 the Producers Guild Award went to “Nomadland.” And on April 4 the top Screen Actors Guild Award was bestowed on the ensemble cast of “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” So the Best Picture Oscar race is down to those two films, right? That’s possible, but recent history reminds us not to rule out a surprise from somewhere else: “Moonlight” didn’t win either of those four years ago, but it took home the top Academy Award anyway. And you know what’s starting to look a little like “Moonlight”? “Minari.”

The Flop That Wasn't
By Raymond Benson
Most folks today may be familiar with The Producers, the Broadway musical comedy that ran for years, toured around the globe, and elicited laughter and joy for audiences of all ages. There are likely less people today who have experienced the original 1967 film upon which the successful musical is based. For decades, though, the movie was all we had.
In the mid-sixties, Mel Brooks was a successful television writer, having worked on hilarious comedies with Sid Caesar, among other works, and later the co-creator of Get Smart. Brooks then came up with what was first intended to be a novel, then a play, and finally a screenplay called Springtime for Hitler—an outrageous satire lampooning the Nazis. The Hollywood producers to whom Brooks pitched the piece were appalled. No audience would accept a “comedyâ€. about Hitler.

It’s a new year and everyone wants to put the vile cesspool that was 2020 behind them. Thankfully, HBO Max is coming out swinging to make the transition out of the hellyear even easier. HBO Max’s list of new releases for January 2021 is positively packed with notable film releases and even a fun HBO Max Original or two.
For starters, Search Party season 4 will arrive to HBO Max on Jan. 14. This season of the show with a now-surprising lifespan finds Dory Sief in the thrall of a deranged stalker…right after getting off on murder charges. These Brooklynites lead such fascinating lives! “When you’re dead, you can’t do much,” Mel Brooks says in his first overt political statement without a punchline. It is a big turnaround from the position he took while making the 1995 vampire comedy, Dracula: Dead and Loving It. But Brooks has enough limits in his life right now. He can only see his son and grandson through protective glass. His closest friend, the late and wonderful Carl Reiner, no longer picks up morning coffee. Brooks is endorsing former Vice President Joe Biden for president because President Trump is “not doing a damn thing” about the coronavirus pandemic.
“My father, @MelBrooks, is 94. He has never made a political video. Until now,” Brooks’s son, author Max Brooks, tweeted along with a video of Mel addressing the camera while his son and grandson stand forlornly behind a glass window.

Netflix added an enormous haul of movies on this first day of September, catering for all tastes. There’s musicals, sci-fi flicks, family films and much more. And if you’re in the mood for something a bit more frightening, Netflix has got you covered, too. The streaming giant added four horror pics from across the decades this Tuesday to kick off the month before Halloween with some scares. Let’s go through them alphabetically.
First of all, we have 1997’s Anaconda, the cult classic creature feature starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube and Jon Voight. It follows a documentary film crew in the Amazon rainforest who encounter an embittered snake hunter and get caught up in his quest to kill a gigantic anaconda. It spawned a bunch of sequels, the last of which was 2015’s crossover Lake Placid Vs. Anaconda, and a reboot was announced to be on the way in January,...

September is nearly upon us, which means that Netflix will be adding a whole host of new movies and TV shows to their content library on the first day of the month, as they continue to assert their dominance over the competition in the streaming wars. If anything, the company could do with the focus shifting to pre-existing titles after finding themselves in the headlines for all the wrong reasons recently.

Updated with video: Bill Maher found his stride in his first episode since March to originate from the regular studio home of HBO’s Real Time, capping tonight’s show with a call-to-postal-action against — who else — President Donald Trump.
“If Trump’s going to try to scuttle the Post Office, we need to fight back,” the host said, delivering his “New Rules” show-ending monologue from his familiar set at LA’s CBS Television City. Starting in October, he added, “Don’t use the mail for anything but ballots until the election is over” on November 3.
Without an in-person audience due to Covid-19 restrictions, no one applauded Maher’s proposed hashtag for the postal effort: #FreeUpTheMail, but he charged forward anyway. The segment, along with conversations with guests Wynton Marsalis, Trey Gowdy, Rick Wilson and Nina Burleigh, saw Maher ditch the self-pitying mewling of some of his recent backyard efforts during the pandemic.

Sundance Institute has today announced the 11 artists selected for its first-ever Women at Sundance | Adobe Fellowship, “designed to meaningfully support women artists creating bold new work in film and media, with a priority on filmmakers from historically underrepresented communities.” The brand-new fellowship includes a $5,000 cash grant, skill-building workshops, and year-round mentorship from Sundance Institute staff and Adobe executives. Fellows were selected by Adobe from Sundance Institute’s community of supported artists across program disciplines.
Earlier this summer, Sundance announced a series of layoffs and consolidations in reaction to the financial hits endured during the pandemic. While the organization announced it would be restructuring some of its labs and associated programs, the creation of a brand-new fellowship is especially exciting.
Last month, the organization also announced its latest group of 10 young filmmakers selected for the yearlong Sundance Ignite x Adobe fellowship, of which Adobe is also a founding supporter.
