Quick View Into ND Oil Boom
a_skalicky28 March 2021
This movie gives a fairly accurate example into the lifestyle of the modern ND boom. Follows the story of an out of state worker in need of a job.

For me, going in not expecting much, it was worth viewing. Characters lack much needed additional depth and dialogue was noticeably thin.

Check it out if you want to better understand what the recent Wild West boom of ND looks like for the average person.

Frustrating

Warning: Spoilers
This is the third time I've seen this film, and purchased it mainly to support indie films. The story takes place in small town midwest America which is a location that I believe is criminally underused in the industry, so I was initially very hopeful for this movie. The themes of isolation, poverty, struggling to make ends meet while caring for a family, can easily be explored in a film like this. Unfortunately, the movie tries to hit all of them in a short period of time, and never really goes deep into any of them. While you're watching, you can almost feel the story begging to dive deep into some of these themes and it just never happens which makes it feel incredibly frustrating.

Spoilers ahead: To give an example, there's a big buildup of the main character cheating on his wife. It becomes clear it's going to happen, and I was interested how deeply they'd go with his infidelity, how it would effect him, his work, would his wife found out etc. But they sleep with each other once about halfway through the runtime and boom she is gone from the rest of the movie. It's never even mentioned again. This is how every topic the movie hits on goes and it's really really unfortunate. What's more bizarre, is that the director has plenty of quiet still shots where nothing really happens, which is normally fine, but it seems like we swapped story depth for these empty shots. I'd give this a generous 6/10 just with how much potential there is here. Acting is average at best, setting and mood are great.

Slow movie
anthonylemonslemons27 September 2021
This movie had some potential, but it's very slow with a lot of filler scenes. Many of the actors and actresses seem to be hired locally from the area of filming, due to the bad acting. Some of the music doesn't match the pace of the scenes. I'm surprised Dwight Yoakum agreed to be a part of this production.

Pleasantly surprised

I caught this on Hulu. I was pleasantly surprised and am a little surprised by the low ratings. The story is a common one of a young man going to somewhat desperate measures to support his family when he doesn't have a lot of good options and is lured into the oil and gas industry. It was very well acted by the lead and I thought realistic. It will resonate with anyone who has been up against the wall financially and has had to scramble and rely on the charity of strangers to get a leg up.

Gritty and a bit gut wrenching

Decent acting and emotional. I've read stories that's it's a bit of the wild west up there. In a way, it's like a US version of a migrant worker just trying to take care of his family sending money back.

Better than expected and very realistic.

Alot better than I expected, the main actor is very endearing and the situations are realistic and well acted. Good music.

I used to work in the business side of oil and gas and it really is like this. It's very boom and bust and when the times are good, it's great and when it's bust, it's really bad and you're hurting. Plus it can change on a dime. Then just when you think you're out and moving on, it ticks back up and lures you back.

Although I have not been to Williston, I have heard that it really is like this, kind of an outlaw town due to the industry presence.
