Slow but solid

This film took a while to get going but the cinematography was good as was the acting . I should imagine given more funds this would have enabled the makers of this film to take it up a notch.
In closing ,
An obvious low budget film but well acted and professionally presented . Slow start but good solid ending . Wort taking the time to watch
A true and tough ambience in this film.

This film allowed for great insight into the characters involved. The bleak and stoic imagery gave the film an edge. Although it started off quite slowly and it took time to connect, the film does grab a hold of the viewer.
I believe the music was quite disjointed at times, and often did not fit well with the feeling the film was building. It felt as if it hit a ceiling towards the end, and there was a lack of progression or development. However, there were some great moments that carried a real punch. The realism and grittiness gave the film an attraction. Many people watching this would be able to relate to the themes tackled.
A particularly strong and thoughtful performance from Rupert Procter, which the other actors worked well off of. Alan Coulson (the director) has managed to capture a very true and tough ambience in this film.

It was a very professionally made film, no jarring or grainy camera, no horribly forced lines...
The plot is a little slow but does have a solid ending.
The acting is a little wooden at times but overall solid.
I took a chance on this movie when there were only 5 votes and was very pleasantly surprised!

A nice change from typical revenge films

Ashes sets up the type of scenario that we're use to seeing in pretty most revenge films then it starts to play out differently as the story progresses towards the end. Great performances are given from all of the cast, some magnificent cinematic visuals are seen throughout the film, wonderful locations in England / Scotland fill up nicely in the frame, and a good combination of composed music / pre-recorded songs mix well into some of the film's sequences. Ashes was an overall excellent film to watch.
A intriguing story very well told

Just yesterday I had the privilege to watch writer and director Alan Coulson's passion project ASHES.
I liked the fact that the time was taken to introduce the characters in a slow paced, intriguing way. It takes some courage of the creator nowadays, but it is really worth the while. The main characters are portrayed without stereo types and no one is just good or bad. This makes them real and three dimensional.
It's a intriguing story with a twist, very well told by a director and a refreshing cast.

A Refreshingly British Piece of Work

I have just watched Alan Coulson's "Ashes"... albeit in stops and starts throughout the day and really enjoyed it.
Overall the production is well finished, runs fluidly with a good solid storyline... all in all I am really impressed.
In all there were only a couple of really minor observations which I haven't bothered to mention as they are hyper-critical and only spotted because I was looking for faults.
A well told and refreshingly British piece of work and really worth a watch in my opinion!
Congratulations to the crew and cast alike.

Revenge and Redemption in true British Style

An excellent piece of film making. Alan Coulson's "Ashes" is a slow burner and all the better for it. The time it takes for the characters and their respective back stories to develop and intertwine is very satisfying and the pace of the film and its story are well matched. The climax is suitably tense and well executed.
The four leads are all excellent (as are the supporting players) and deliver the realistic script with great sensitivity and skill, making you believe their characters and their situations totally.
The direction, cinematography and editing are extremely competent and the soundtrack is well chosen to match the piece.
Definitely worth a look and deserves a wider audience.

Wonderfully acted

A wonderfully acted film with a powerful and moving ending. The film is well paced, not too slow as I have seen some reviews say. I thought the pace was right for the story of these people who are all lost and who are all stuck in the past, unable to move forward. There are a couple of sequences with hardly any dialogue that I thought were brilliant. I also thought it was quite a spiritual story, with a few religious symbols and themes.
A well told, emotional story about loss and the power of forgiveness.

A strong low budget drama

A little slow to start as we get to know the people and their relationships but picks up with some really good tense scenes between the various characters. We really care about the two leads, one the husband of a woman killed in a fire, the other the young lad who killed her. Both are broken by what happened. In fact all the various characters we meet are lost or trapped in some way. The acting by relatively unknown actors is very good throughout. The story builds to a surprising and powerful - and very moving - ending.
Well worth a look.
Very much enjoyed!
