Modern Family returns with a refreshingly fast paced episode
ryanjmorris16 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Summer Lovin' may not be the funniest episode that Modern Family has ever done, but it makes up for this with a structure that the show hasn't experimented with before. After season six's potentially can't changing cliffhanger, we breeze through the summer by jumping forward a month after every commercial break. This not only gives the characters and the stories room to breathe, but the humour too. Whilst this isn't a particularly hilarious episode, we're still treated to odd moments that stand out: notably Claire and Haley conforming to the shape of the tree to hide from Andy, and Cameron repeatedly leaving and re-entering the frame while Mitchell speaks to his old boss.

After a stellar season six (the best season of the show in years), Modern Family now has the chance to be more experimental with its characters (Haley, Mitchell and Alex are all now in unexplored territory). The show is on a roll lately, after a somewhat average fifth season Modern Family bounced back in style. Hopefully this will keep the show's momentum soaring forward for another great year.

S6 finale S7 E1

Warning: Spoilers
well, i'm a sucker for romantic stuff. i admit it. MEGA F-ING SPOILER ALERT . so when season 6 ended, i almost had like 5 heart attacks and 10 panic attacks. because i really wanted to see Hayley and Andy !! then it ended, and i thought well, this shows always skips a bunch of months between seasons so farewell sweet fantasy. but oh wait ! it gives you huge false hopes ! within the first five minutes or so ! which i really wanted to end well ! the thing is i'm really enjoying where this is going. i'd rather see them get together much simpler. but well wheres the atmosphere ? i used to hate CHUCK TV series ending, now i don't because it found a way to appeal to the masses. cant explain much more than that folks. cheers !

Summer Lovin' - S07E01
rgan15 December 2018
Picking up right where season six closer "American Skyper" left off, this uniquely told continuing narrative spanning three months deals with each house's leftover storyline from the previous season, however the extended period the narrative takes place across leaves each story feeling lacking as they can't be delved deeper into before another time jump. While an intriguing premise, this style of storytelling feels odd for the platform of this sitcom. Adam DeVine shines in the scenes he's in, however the return of Reid Ewing's Dylan feels a tired trope for this series, especially for a season premiere. While not necessarily bad, "Summer Lovin'" is an underwhelming start for this seventh season of the long-running series.

Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't a huge fan of this episode, the show seemed unsure as to what to do with the Haley/Andy storyline (or couldn't tie down Adam Devine long-term) so bottles the fallout from the big cliff-hanger of S6, and then quickly tries to go back to standard territory.

None of the stories worked particularly well, though at least at this stage of the shows run they were writing Alex a bit better, but no, disappointing.
