Disappointing episode
barbagvido21 January 2016
Some people already saw this episode on Freeform app and said it's much better and darker, but I thought the pilot was much better. Now I'm very concerned about this show. If this fails, there probably won't be another reboot and this can be so good if done right. The books and the world Cassandra Clare created is amazing, but this show (for now, I hope it gets better) ruins it even more than the movie.

They promised us that this will do the book series justice. So far, it doesn't. There is barely any Gothic atmosphere and characters aren't fleshed out enough, but they still have time, so I'll forgive them here. The main problem I have is that it just doesn't feel as much of a big story anymore. It has all the important plot points from the books and I like that, but they are rushing it! In the books (and the movie), all the events from the first two episodes of the show happen in three days or something, but here it's all ONE DAY! I hope the entire season doesn't turn out to be just one crazy night for the characters. They are supposed to expand, but they rush it and that's the biggest problem here. Now, when I take a look at the plot point this episode is focused on (City of Bones part) they did a solid job and the central scene (the one with Silent Brothers) is okay but I liked it better in a movie because City of Bones was huge in a movie just like it was in the book. Here it's just one cave. I know that they have a much smaller budget here, but they could've at least show it as some kind of maze or something. But they totally nailed Silent Brothers. In the movie they were fine, they were well done, intimidating and everything, but they were even better here and the voices were better too and you could really feel uneasiness when they were around. And also, Valentine (the villain) is much better in this episode. In the pilot he was a little bit goofy, not as much as the one in the movie who was freaking out all the time and acted like a 12 year old, but still goofy, he was just like: "I'm so bad, muahahahaha", here they really show him as a psychotic power-hungry maniac and they show it in a best way possible. And really, Kat McNamara isn't as bad as some people say. She was very good, even better than Lily Collins in a movie in my opinion and the rest is pretty good and I liked that they fleshed out Isabelle more and she's not just that one hot girl, she's actually very cool and while I like how they are teasing all that romance that's yet to come, Freeform, let me tell you this: The Shadowhunters fandom isn't like Twilight fandom. Most of us care about story and the world much more than the romance (in my opinion, the romance should even be reduced a little bit). It can be nice to see your favorite characters get together and everything, bit that's not the only thing we care about. Also, they should take their time to set up the world because they are probably rushing the plot of the first book just because it was shown in a movie already, but they shouldn't do that. They have plenty of time here and they should set up the world properly because this probably won't get another chance if it fails.

Excited for what is to come

Warning: Spoilers
Warning: This may contain spoilers if you have not yet watched any of the Shadowhunters series or seen Episode Two: " The Descent into hell isn't easy"

I don't understand all the hate towards this show currently. This show has just started so of course it is going to take a bit of time to find its footing and such. I've seen a lot of people compare this show to the books and complaining about how different it is. This show is not meant to be exactly like the books. They have stated this for months in most of the interviews they have given. "We basically have in the first season the same story as the first book," McNamara continues. "From point A to point B, we pretty much do the same thing. But the way in which we get there, we changed a few things, because we want to make it exciting for people who know the books cover to cover, and people who are new to the world."-Katherine McNamara (Clary) to ET Online. The characters have been aged up as well so of course certain things will not be the same. They need to make this world appealing to more than just people who have read the books as well , so the idea that it will be exactly like the books is unrealistic. Most successful adaptations have to stray from the books to keeps things entertaining. Pretty Little Liars is a great example of this as well as The Vampire Diaries. This show also cannot stay exactly true to the books as they would quickly run out of material. I think the changes made such as aging the characters up, adding more people to institute, etc make a lot of sense and make the story even more interesting. I have seen several people complaining about how the movie cast was better and how the movie was more accurate. One thing to note is that the movie cast had a chance to audition for the same roles they previously had yet they did not. Hodge in the movie was portrayed by a man that seemed to be old enough to be the father of the former circle members not a member of the circle himself. I am delighted that the show actually casted someone who fits the character description and actually looks the age that Hodge is which is 36 according to the author. Valentine in the show also looks old enough to be the father of someone Clary's age rather than someone way younger. Matthew Daddario blew me away at his portrayal of Alec; he portrays Alec exactly as he is at the time that which the story begins. Alberto Rosende was the first character that grasped my attention because he was just so accurate. Every single thing he said was just so Simon that I couldn't get over it. Emeraude Toubia is everything that I could wish for as Isabelle Lightwood. She portrays Isabelle as the badass she truly is yet you can also see her compassion and the way she cares for others.. Isabelle's scenes with Clary and their relationship in general was such a welcomed change from the books. She seems to actually care for Clary and her wellbeing encouraging her and building her up rather than knocking her down. The entire Isabelle disliking Clary in the first book seemed so unnecessary ,and I love seeing strong female relationships on television. Perhaps one of the best things about this series is the diversity in the cast. It is a wonderful change from the books and the movie. This show has a lot of potential as it has not yet begun to scratch the surface of what is to come. Episode two was nicely paced and a lot slower than episode 1 which made me enjoy it a lot more than the previous episode. This show does have flaws of course such as any show during the first season does. There are some things that I was not too keen on for example the necklace that Clary wears and the visions that it gives her. It reminded me a bit of That's so Raven. As a whole, I believe episode two is such a great improvement from episode one , and I believe that with each episode it will only get better. As the show continues, we will get to know the characters more and watch their development over time. We will soon see the start of relationships on the show as we have not yet had time to see them develop despite the foreshadowing. Plot twists will be revealed and the show will truly begin to find its rhythm. I am beyond excited to see how this plays out and cannot wait to see the next episode.

Good

I have to say that the relationship between Clary and Izzy in the show is waaaay better than the books! In the books it seems that they don't like eachother without any reason! But in the show they support eachother which is great

Unfortunately, very disappointing

Warning: Spoilers
I am a huge fan of the books and I always know that when a book is turned into a movie or series, it never reaches the standards of the book; but this was nothing like I've ever seen. I don't know which was worse: the acting or the plot? An elementary school play would have had much better performances. Clary is acting as if she knows it all, Jace is neither hot, mysterious nor funny, Alec seems like a tool, Izzy is sort of giving it a try along with Simon, and Hodge: What the heck!!!! Jace and Clary holding hands and seeming to have known each other for ever is quite annoying and Jace simply's not Jace! He lacks every single element: hotness, arrogance, mystery, toughness, bad boy/fragile soul appearance and many more. I have watched many series and this is by far one of the worst. But I still have faith that things will miraculously change. Everybody seems so stiff and the scenes are just badly connected. It lacks good music support, better lines, more well studied plot, better performances...I really do hope things will change. It is just such a shame for the book fans, the book itself and the author. They should really consider letting Cassandra give an input..just saying...
