Apparently, fans don’t want JLo now. So her tour producers are hoping they’ll want JLo then.
The struggling North American “This Is Me…Now” tour – Jennifer Lopez’s first in five years — is transforming into “This Is Me…Live/The Greatest Hits.” It’s apparently hoped that the promise of familiar material will goose ticket sales, which already saw seven tour dates canceled.
The tour is accompanied by a new album and two films. The album opened at No. 1 on a couple of Billboard’s lesser charts and then sank. It debuted at No. 38 on the most important chart, the Billboard 200, and It is now below the Billboard 200 Mendoza line.
It has been 10 years since Lopez’s last studio LP, 2014’s A.K.A., and 22 years since 2002’s This Is Me … Then gave her two of her biggest hits in “Jenny From the Block” and “All I Have.

Jennifer Lopez took on an enormous challenge with This is Me … Now: A Love Story, the “narrative driven, cinematic original” film that hits Prime Video this week. It wasn’t the singing, acting or intricate choreography featured in the 65-minute musical, as the multihyphenate can do all of that in her sleep. The real hurdle arose when the money disappeared and Lopez opted to open her wallet to pay for the whole thing.
“Everybody thought I was crazy when I said I would do it. We did have financing, and then that fell out. They pulled out at the last minute, and then it was that moment where you go, ‘Ok, do we just make a video or do we go ahead and do this thing?'” explained the 54-year-old entertainer during an interview at the Four Seasons Los Angeles in Beverly Hills while sitting alongside her Nuyorican Prods. producing partner Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas.

Hello and welcome to the Scene 2 Seen podcast. I am Valerie Complex, and today we’re talking about the HBO documentary The Stroll with its directors Kristen Lovell (in her directorial debut), and Zackary Drucker, and one of the film’s subjects Carey Smith about the making of the film, how “The Stroll” became a tight knit community, and the repercussions of changes that exist in the Meatpacking District today. Here is a bit more info regarding today’s guest!
When Lovell moved to New York City in the 1990s and began to transition, she was fired from her job. With so few options to earn money to survive, Kristen, like many transgender women of color during this era, began sex work in an area known as “The Stroll” in the Meatpacking District of lower Manhattan. There is where trans women congregated and forged a deep camaraderie to protect each other from harassment and violence.

Toronto Film Festival attendees were surprised this weekend to find director Mel Eslyn’s “Biosphere,” a humorous, semi-futuristic rumination on the last two men on Earth. A late addition to this year’s lineup, the film stars Mark Duplass as the U.S. president and Sterling K. Brown as an advisor, the planet’s sole living humans who are trapped in the biodome of the film’s title. The story sprang from Duplass’ idea of two guys arguing over the virtues of the video game “Mario Bros.,” according to Eslyn.
“They had me at ‘Mario Bros.,’ man,” Brown said. “I always wanted to warp, so I thought that doing this movie would pick up some trade secrets. It can be that simple sometimes.” To which Duplass said: “If the films sells well in Toronto, I’ll teach you how to warp.”

“Black Panther” has been number-one at the box office for four weeks, and its soundtrack album, featuring music by Kendrick Lamar, is showing just as much staying power on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The album is back at number-one this week for the third non-consecutive week, which is the most time spent on top for a soundtrack since “Frozen” in 2014. But “Black Panther” isn’t the only soundtrack showing strength. “The Greatest Showman” is right behind at number-two, while “Coco” leaps into the top 40 for the first time following its Oscar win.
The Billboard 200 chart is determined by calculating equivalent album units, which factors in traditional album sales, individual track sales and online streams. “Black Panther” took the top spot with 76,000 units this week, while “The Greatest Showman” got an Oscar boost with 60,000 units — up 14% following the performance of the nominated song “This is Me” at the Oscars telecast on...

The “Aladdin” remake is coming. There’s nothing you can do about it, now. But at least, there might be some great new music in the film.
Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are two songwriters that should definitely be on your radar by now. The duo is responsible for some of the biggest songs heard in films over the last couple years. Last year, the team won the Golden Globe and Oscar for Best Original Song for “City of Stars” from “La La Land.” This year, they were back at the Oscars for their song “This is Me” from “The Greatest Showman.” And judging by a red carpet interview the two gave, we’ll be hearing a lot more from them in the future.

Set against a backdrop of political upheaval, sexual harassment and school shootings, Oscar’s 90th anniversary celebration could have been one of the most emotionally charged ceremonies in recent years. After a short black-and-white parody of old newsreels Kimmel wasted no time addressing the accounting elephant in the room — last year’s historic Best Picture mix-up — by delivering a word of warning to the nominees: “This year, when you hear your name called, don’t get up right away.”
Kimmel said early in his monologue that his goal was to keep the evening positive, and he largely succeeded, particularly when encouraging people to support movements like #TimesUp and #MeToo.

Lord Freddy Blackfyre: Take that SAG stat
Nate: I can’t believe that only 6 women won Oscars tonight, 2 in categories specifically designated for women.
Eddy Q: We’re back to Best Director being more significant for Best Picture than screenplay awards. It had been the other way round for a while.
Best Actress: Frances McDormand (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”)
Miles: Nice way of playing off Foster’s injury.

The 90th Academy Awards were held on March 4, 2018. Jimmy Kimmel returned as host of the 2018 Oscars after his successful stint last year, particularly after the Best Picture mix-up. Also back were the two Oscar-winning veterans, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, who were given the wrong envelope and mistakenly announced that “La La Land” had won the top prize when the real winner was “Moonlight.” They returned to reveal this year’s winner of the top Academy Award. Scroll down for the full and complete list of winners.
Leading this year’s nominees with a lucky 13 bids is “The Shape of Water.” This fantasy film contends for Best Picture as well as director (Guillermo Del Toro), three performances (Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins), original screenplay, cinematography, costume design, film editing, production design, score, sound mixing, and sound editing.

You can see all of my Oscar predictions on one page here, but let’s go through each category. Many races listed below need no explanation considering these contenders already bagged every other purse this derby season.
Best Picture
“Three Billboards”
“Billboards” should win (21/20 odds) considering its Godzilla rampages through the Golden Globes, SAG and BAFTA Awards, but it’s not nominated for Best Director by those quirky Oscar voters. A big, blazing red flag? Hollywooders either love or hate “Billboards” and, beware: the haters have whipped up lynch mobs across Oscarland. There’s a backlash, but how serious?
Is “Billboards” doomed just because it’s so divisive? Many Oscarologists believe “La La Land” and “The Revenant” lost to “Moonlight” and “Spotlight” because they were so polarizing. The theory goes that voters ranked “La La Land” and “Revenant” either number 1 or 5 or 6. “Moonlight” and “Spotlight” probably had more 2, 3 and 4 votes...

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel will welcome Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway back for a do-over after they named the wrong winner of Best Picture last year. They had been given the Best Actress envelope by mistake and when Dunaway saw the words “La La Land” under the name Emma Stone she blurted them out. The real winner was “Moonlight.”
Stone is also set to present but, in a break with tradition, she won’t be handing out Best Actor at the 90th Academy Awards. That honor goes to two veteran Oscar winners, Jane Fonda and Helen Mirren. Two others past Best Actress winners, Jodie Foster and Jennifer Lawrence have been tapped to present that prize this year (last year’s winner of Best Actor, Casey Affleck, would have traditionally done that but he bowed out of appearing in the wake of the #MeToo movement). However, last year’s supporting winners...

Three little words changed Keala Settle’s life forever: “This Is Me.”
The 42-year-old actress, a Broadway veteran and Tony nominee with roles in Waitress and Les Misérables, had a breakout role this year as Lettie Lutz, (a.k.a. the Bearded Lady) in Michael Gracey’s original movie musical The Greatest Showman.
It was a part that popped with Settle’s powerhouse performance of the song “This Is Me” — an anthem of self-empowerment that has propelled the film’s soundtrack to a No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts and earned songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul an Oscar-nomination for Best Original Song.

This Sunday, the Academy Awards will return to the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood with Jimmy Kimmel hosting for a second consecutive year. The usual Golden Globe and SAG Awards surprises have occurred in tandem with an industry-wide reckoning for powerful Hollywood men that have been called out for their abuses of power, making recent ceremonies more political than ever.
Kimmel confirmed that the #MeToo and Time's Up movements will be a part of the show, though he doesn't want to pull too much from the more celebratory aspects of the Oscars.

By definition, the Oscars can’t please everyone. Come Sunday, one movie will win every category, and fans of the others will claim they were robbed. Pundits have made educated guesses about the frontrunners for weeks, but there’s often a difference between which movies will win and those that should, as IndieWire’s annual critics survey proves to a fault. More than 40 participants voted on which movies deserved the gold — and the results probably don’t bear much resemblance to a winning Oscar pool.

Will a Pasek and Paul tune be music to Oscar voters’ ears again? After winning Best Original Song last year for “City of Stars” from “La La Land,” Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are gunning to be the third reigning champs to defend their crown with their Golden Globe-winning hit “This Is Me” from “The Greatest Showman.”
The first songwriting team to go back-to-back was composer Henry Mancini and lyricist Johnny Mercer, who won for “Moon River” from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1961) and the title track from “Days of Wine and Roses” (1962). Three decades later, Alan Menken achieved the feat as well, winning for the title song from “Beauty and the Beast” (1991), shared with late lyricist Howard Ashman, and “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin” (1992), with lyricist Tim Rice.

Now that he’s been nominated for an Academy Award, Sufjan Stevens is about to take the next logical step: performing at the actual ceremony. The singer/songwriter received a nod in the Best Original Song category for “Mystery of Love,” one of two tunes he contributed to the “Call Me by Your Name” soundtrack; his other, “Visions of Gideon,” didn’t receive a nod.
Also performing next weekend are Gael García Bernal, Mary J. Blige, Andra Day, Natalia Lafourcade, Miguel, Keala Settle, and Common, who won in the same category for “Glory,” from the “Selma” soundtrack. Bernal, Lafourcade and Miguel will perform “Remember Me” from “Coco,” Blige is set to perform “Mighty River” from “Mudbound,” Common and Andra Day are performing “Stand Up for Something” from “Marshall,” and Settle will perform “This Is Me” from “The Greatest Showman.”

The jury’s still out on whether being a Best Picture nominee gives you an advantage in Best Original Song, but surely being a Best Animated Feature nominee is a huge plus, right? Technically yes, but it’s definitely not a sure thing to win both. “Coco” sits atop our latest predictions in both Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Remember Me,” and if the Disney/Pixar film indeed goes two-for-two, it would only be the third time that the two categories went to the same film.
That might sound startling because so many catchy movie anthems have hailed from animated films, specifically Disney films. But the Best Animated Feature category was only added in 2001, right after Disney ruled Best Original Song in the ‘90s — five of the decade’s song winners were from animated Disney films; a sixth, “When You Believe,” was from DreamWorks’ “The Prince of Egypt...

If Benj Pasek and Justin Paul had been better at pirouettes, there’s a good chance that they would not be the reigning Best Original Song Oscar winners (“City of Stars,” “La La Land”), now vying for their second statues (“This Is Me,” “The Greatest Showman”).
The composers — who have only scripted songs for two completed films — became friends during their first week at the University of Michigan, where they studied musical theater. “We were the two worst students in our ballet class, which was required for our major,” Pasek told IndieWire by phone. “We were so bad at it that we would kind of hide behind each other and cover for each other, so that the teacher wouldn’t notice.” Unlike their confident, tights-clad peers, Pasek and Paul were dance novices in baggy sweatpants.

All five of this year’s nominees for Best Original Song will be performed on the Oscars. The academy confirmed Friday (Feb. 23) that a slew of talent will be raising their voice in song. In making the announcement, Oscars producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd said, “We’re excited to have these talented artists showcase the powerful contribution music makes to filmmaking.” The 90th annual Academy Awards air live on ABC on March 4.
