The creative force behind the American sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave, Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin, are getting the band back together after landing a pilot at HBO for their new project, The Chair Company. Robinson and Kanin wrote the half-hour comedy pilot, with production courtesy of Adam McKay and Todd Schulman for Hyperobject Industries.
Written and executive-produced by Robinson and Kanin, The Chair Company focuses on a man (Robinson) investigating a far-reaching conspiracy after an embarrassing workplace incident. The Chair Company arrives at HBO just as the network has sunsetted Bill Hader’s Barry and Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm in the past several months.

Tim Robinson's unmistakable brand of cringe-comedy humor is setting its sights on its next victim(s), but rest assured -- we're all trying to find the guy who did this. That "guy" would probably be all of us who gleefully devoured Netflix's sketch series "I Think You Should Leave" and vaulted the comedian and former "Saturday Night Live" actor to the cream of the crop, turning the worst fictional societal monster this side of Larry David in "Curb Your Enthusiasm" into a ratings juggernaut. We have absolutely no regrets whatsoever.
In one of the wisest comedy decisions made in recent memory, HBO has now decided that it wants in on the Tim Robinson business. You'll undoubtedly want to put his latest production on your radar, titled "The Chair Company." According to Deadline, this new series has been given the go-ahead for a half-hour pilot episode that's executive produced by,...

HBO has given a pilot order to the comedy “The Chair Company” from Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin, Variety has confirmed.
Both Robinson and Kanin serve as writers and executive producers on the pilot, with Robinson also set to star. Adam McKay and Todd Schulman will also executive produce via Hyperobject Industries, which is under an overall deal at HBO.
The logline for the series states, “After an embarrassing incident at work, a man (Robinson) finds himself investigating a far-reaching conspiracy.”
Kanin and Robinson are frequent collaborators, beginning with their time together on the writing staff of “Saturday Night Live.” They then went on to co-create the popular Comedy Central series “Detroiters” with Sam Richardson and Joe Kelly (with Robinson and Richardson starring) and the Netflix sketch comedy series “I Think You Should Leave” (with Robinson also starring). Earlier this month, we shared the news that Anchor Bay Entertainment – which used to be a major player in the horror world back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, when they gave DVD releases to films like the Evil Dead trilogy, George A. Romero’s Dead trilogy, the Sleepaway Camp franchise, The Hills Have Eyes, The Car, Maniac, Prom Night, some of the Hellraisers, Halloweens, and much more – is being revived, with their first two releases puppet horror film Abruptio and Dinner with Leatherface, a documentary that looks at the life, career, and legacy of original Leatherface actor Gunnar Hansen. Now we’ve learned that the new Anchor Bay has acquired the North American rights to the horror/comedy Crust, with the plan being to release it sometime later this year.

We learned last week that iconic label Anchor Bay Entertainment is coming back to life here in 2024, and founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz have announced this morning that they have acquired the North American rights to the horror/comedy Crust, which will have its release later this year.
Directed by Sean Whalen (The People Under The Stairs), who co-wrote the film with Jim Wald, Crust stars Whalen, Daniel Roebuck (Rob Zombie’s The Munsters), Rebekah Kennedy (Two Witches), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), and Ricky Dean Logan (Back to the Future II), with Shawntay Dalon (“Detroiters”) and Alan Ruck (“Succession”).
“As someone who grew up watching Sean on screen, I am thrilled to be in business with him,” says Zambeck. “The fact that it’s on a witty and clever film like this – one that displays such a mastery of tone – makes it so much sweeter. I can’t wait...

Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave), Paul Rudd (Only Murders in the Building) and Kate Mara (Class of ’09) have been set to star in Friendship, a new comedy from Fifth Season and BoulderLight Pictures.
Pic centers on Craig Waterman (Robinson), who enjoys his life. He likes New Balance shoes, Subway sandwiches, and Marvel movies. He lives in the suburbs with his wife, Tami, and son, Steven. He’s happy to work at Universal Digital, a company that helps brands make their products more habit-forming. Craig sees no reason to change anything or make new friends… until weatherman Brian moves into the neighborhood. Mysterious yet friendly, macho but vulnerable, Brian (Rudd) transforms everything for Craig, but Craig’s obsessive and childlike nature threatens to ruin the friendship, and possibly everything else in his life.
Friendship is the first feature from director Andrew DeYoung, who also penned the script and is exec producing alongside Tracy Rosenblum.

After years of turning in memorable comedic performances, Sam Richardson is angling to nab his first career Emmy Award. He has the chance to do it this year with his nomination for Best Comedy Guest Actor for playing Ghanaian billionaire Edwin Akufo on the Apple TV hit, “Ted Lasso.”
Richardson’s nominated episode is “International Break.” Sam (Toheeb Jimoh) goes to his restaurant to find it empty, despite having a full slate of reservations for the night. Akufo reveals himself and shows that his grudge against Sam is still alive through constant belittling and insults. He tells Sam that he still plans on destroying his life by opening a better Nigerian restaurant nearby and that he kept Sam off the Nigerian national team by writing a substantial check to the country’s government in exchange for blacklisting Sam.

The python killing game may have been the feature focus of Peacock‘s Killing It, but the actual creatures of mystery are the humans.
The heartfelt comedy combines the sweetness and out-of-the-box comedy of a series like Detroiters or The Office with the spicy edge of Breaking Bad.
Actors Craig Robinson and Rell Battle, who play Craig and Isaiah Foster, found that the roles of down-on-their-luck brothers with deep trauma can be both hilarious and emotional. Every character owns a breakout moment that leaves viewers cackling one minute and sobbing the next.
Battle had an extremely emotional Emmy-worthy moment alongside Robinson during Killing It Season 1 where Isaiah finally addressed childhood trauma.
“I call him Denzrell,” Robinson joked with Showbiz Cheat Sheet about Battle’s performance.

“Veep” star Sam Richardson says he’d like members of the AMPTP to “be human beings” as SAG-AFTRA hits its 11th day on the pickets lines.
The WGA strike struck on May 2, and following along in protest against the AMPTP on July 14 was SAG-AFTRA. The actors union made the decision after new contract talks with major studios and streaming services failed before July 13. The showdown could last months longer, and there’s even been speculation that studios will hold out until actors and writers are broken financially.
While recognizing and acknowledging the history of how large operations like the Hollywood studios work, Richardson said one of the biggest messages he has for the AMPTP is to have empathy for other people.

Amid the chaos of “I Think You Should Leave” Season 3, a cartoon figure in a computer game shows you its asshole. This crudely animated drawing isn’t an object that typically has an anus — let alone eyes, arms, and legs — but there it is: a black squiggly mark inside a circle, pinched between two parted butt-cheeks. It’s quite a sight, to be honest. An unforeseeable punchline in a sketch with more than a few big laughs. But the reason I mention it isn’t to spoil the joke; it’s because Tim Robinson’s Netflix series is so full of figurative assholes — who transfix and entertain, who scream and rant, who endear themselves to us across their embarrassing escapades, but who are still assholes in the plainest sense — that it’s extra jarring to see a literal asshole staring you right in the face.
This is not a complaint.

Amazon Freevee has given the greenlight to “Clean Slate,” a new comedy from Norman Lear’s Act III Productions, starring Laverne Cox and comedian George Wallace. The original comedy has been in development at Freevee since February 2021, back when the ad-supported streamer was known as IMDb TV.
“Clean Slate,” which comes from Cox, Wallace and Dan Ewen, centers on car wash owner Henry (Wallace), whose estranged child comes home to Alabama after 17 years. But he must do some soul searching as he comes to terms with the fact that his adult child is a trans woman, Desiree (Cox). There’s no word yet on an episodic order, when the series might shoot or an estimated premiere date.
Ewen serves as executive producer and writer on “Clean Slate,” and he has story credit along with Cox and Wallace. Cox will also serve as an executive producer on the show, while Wallace is a producer.

Sam Richardson’s profile has risen in recent years through roles such as eager aide Richard Splett on “Veep,” as well as the star and co-creator (with Tim Robinson) of cult hit “Detroiters” and even via the woefully under appreciated series “Champaign Ill,” which he top lined with Adam Pally.
But it’s Apple TV+’s “The Afterparty” that has cemented Richardson as not only a star — but also a romantic lead, opposite Zoë Chao.
That’s why Richardson’s Emmy nomination this year is extra sweet. As he and Chao film Season 2 of “The Afterparty,” Richardson… wait a minute. Sorry. Correction: “The Afterparty” should have been Emmy-nominated.
But instead, Richardson is an Emmy nominee for an entirely different standout role: comedy guest actor on a different Apple TV+ show, playing Ghanaian billionaire Edwin Akufo in Season 2 of “Ted Lasso.”

This year, “Ted Lasso” made history by tying the record set by “30 Rock” in 2009 for the most non-sketch comedy acting Emmy nominations at 10. Four female and six male performers have been recognized across five categories for the Apple TV+ show’s second batch of episodes. Though half of these men are first-time contenders, Best Comedy Guest Actor nominee Sam Richardson is the only one who joined the cast during the sophomore season.
Richardson appeared in the final two episodes of the latest “Ted Lasso” season as African billionaire Edwin Akufo. Tim Robinson’s beloved sketch comedy show “I Think You Should Leave” has been renewed for Season 3 at Netflix, Variety has learned exclusively.
Cast member Sam Richardson told Variety that the team was in the process of writing the third season in early March. It is unclear when Season 3 will debut, as well as how many episodes it will contain. If one thing’s for sure, there will be more memes (and hopefully more hot dogs).
“I’m not sure when they’ll start filming,” said Richardson, who appeared in both seasons of the Netflix show. “But there are funny sketches coming already, I can tell you that much.”
“I Think You Should Leave” is created by Robinson and Zach Kanin. Akiva Schaffer, Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone (The Lonely Island) and Ali Bell executive produce for Party Over Here, alongside Alex Bach and Dan Powell for Irony Point, and Alice Mathias.

Exclusive: Jeff Dye (Better Late Than Never), Carlos “HaHa” Davis (The Come Up), Dustin Ybarra (Home Economics) and Ryu Go Eun (WeCrashed) have signed on to star in Stealing Jokes, an action-comedy from writer-director Mike Young (A Stand Up Guy), which is heading into production this week in Detroit.
The film follows three comics who hit the road, turn the tables on shady club owners and pull off a major heist, setting off a chain of events that go horribly south. Dan Gilbert, who owns Quicken Loans and the Cleveland Cavaliers, is serving as the project’s financier and producing alongside Eddie Rubin, Michael Manasseri and Detroit’s Woodward Original.
Stealing Jokes is Young’s first feature under his Red Leaf Entertainment banner, and his third overall. He previously wrote and directed the comedy My Man Is a Loser, starring Michael Rapaport, John Stamos and Tika Sumpter, and the Netflix comedy A Stand Up Guy,...

Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin have set up the comedy pilot “Computer School” at HBO Max, Variety has learned.
In the pilot, a recent high school grad and his uncle attend the same computer class in suburban Michigan. Robinson will star as the uncle. Robinson and Kanin are writing and executive producing the pilot. Andrew Gaynord will direct.
The pilot marks the latest collaboration for Kanin and Robinson. The duo most recently created the critically-acclaimed Netflix sketch comedy series “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson.” The series has aired two seasons on Netflix to date, with the most recent six-episode season dropping on the streamer in July 2021.

There’s ambition for ambition’s sake and then there’s ambition by design. “The Afterparty” — an eight-episode comedic murder-mystery where each episode is not only told from a different character’s perspective, but in a distinct genre befitting each person’s particular story — is 100 percent the latter. Created by Chris Miller (who also directs every episode) and written by Miller, his long-time creative partner Phil Lord, and a talented staff, the Apple TV+ limited series puts its creative team to great use, building out an engaging, ongoing whodunit with striking individual pieces, including rom-com, musical, and animated episodes. But rather than limit their eclectic talent exhibition to what the production staff can do behind the camera, Miller & Co. enlist an enviable cast of comedians to flex more than just their chuckle muscles onscreen.

Described as a “genre-defying series,” Apple TV+’s “The Afterparty” features a murderer’s row of comedic talent, all joined together for creator and sole director Chris Miller’s murder mystery. Set on the night of a 15-year high school reunion where a murder has occurred, nearly every segment in the eight-episode season (of which seven were provided for this review) comes from the perspective of one of the night’s attendees. That individual provides testimony to the detective on the case — Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) — who considers these accounts “mind movies.” According to Danner, “we’re all the stars of our own movie” — which creates the basic angle of the series.
Based on these individual episode-length “mind movies,” “The Afterparty” sets out to build a complete picture of what actually happened on the night of the murder of a high-profile celebrity (and the suspects’ former classmate), Xavier (Dave Franco...

On November 29, it was announced that Hulu’s award-winning comedy “Pen15” would conclude with the release of the eight remaining episodes of its second season on Friday, December 3. It was devastating news to fans of the series, which premiered in February 2019, seemingly the latest critically acclaimed series to come to an abrupt conclusion, another singular show gone too soon.
But this wasn’t Netflix canceling “Glow” or Comedy Central axing “Detroiters,” Freeform’s “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, or even Hulu’s “High Fidelity.” Because the decision to conclude “Pen15” had nothing to do with Hulu and everything to do with the women calling the shots, a reality made abundantly clear during a recent FYC event for the series.
“Pen15” is the story of 13-year-old best friends in the year 2000, Anna Kone (Anna Konkle) and Maya Ishii-Peters (Maya Erskine), as they attempt to navigate the pain and humiliation of middle school...

Where to Watch “Detroiters”: Paramount+
I could spend paragraphs explaining why “Detroiters” is one of the best comedies of the past decade. There would be plenty of discussion of the on-screen best-friend chemistry of Sam Richardson and Tim Robinson and an explanation of why this show is the best argument for giving some of the funniest people on the planet the resources to make what they want.
But no words can capture the magic of this show better than these two incredible minutes of television.
It starts with the scene-setting. The Cramblin Duvet team is nothing if not economical. Andre Belue (playing the impeccably named Tommy Pencils) duct-taping a makeshift boom mic tells you everything you need to know about them: It may not be conventional, but it’ll get the job done. Tim and Sam’s genuine awe at working with local...

“Nothing can ruin this night.” That’s the hope, at least, at the outset of the first teaser-trailer for Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s new murder-mystery series, “The Afterparty.”
Per Apple TV+, “The Afterparty” is a comedic whodunit set at a high school reunion. Each of the eight episodes features a retelling of the same night through a different character’s perspective, each with its own unique visual style and film genre to match the teller’s personality.
The all-star cast includes Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao, Ben Schwartz, Ike Barinholtz, Ilana Glazer (“Broad City”), Jamie Demetriou, Dave Franco and John Early (“Search Party”).
The first trailer certainly sets the tone with Ini Kamoze’s “Here Comes the Hotstepper” and Dave Franco taking a mysterious swan dive off a cliff. Haddish looks to be our Hercule Poirot/Benoit Blanc, the popcorn-eating detective determined to suss out what makes...

The “True Lies” pilot at CBS is building out its supporting cast.
Omar Miller, Erica Hernandez, and Mike O’Gorman have all joined the drama pilot. Variety previously exclusively reported that Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga would star in the pilot, which is based on the film of the same name.
Like the film, main character Harry (Howey) appears to be a benign suburban dad and computer salesman on the surface, when in reality he is a world-class spy. His unfulfilled wife Helen (Gonzaga) is propelled into a life of danger and adventure when she’s recruited to work alongside him to save the world as they try to revitalize their passionless marriage.
Miller will star as Gib, the logistics guy for the group. It’s his job to make sure everyone knows their duties and the missions go smoothly. Dry-witted but all business, he shows up unexpectedly at a barbecue...

“The Amber Ruffin Show” is expected to feature Ruffin’s signature smart-but-silly take on the week’s news. ““We can’t wait to write sketches, songs and jokes about this terrible time we call now!” Ruffin said in a statement. The writer has lent her talents to...

From scene-stealing roles in Veep and Curb Your Enthusiasm to new romcom Hooking Up, the ex-cruise liner comic is happy playing the underdog
If you want to watch Sam Richardson, it’s a good idea to just head for the best comedy you can think of, because he’ll probably be in it. He played an abnormally good-natured aide in Veep. He played the best friend of a dead rapper in YouTube’s wonderful yet chronically overlooked Champaign Ill. He co-created Detroiters with Tim Robinson, which is very possibly the finest sitcom you’ve never seen. He has enjoyed stints on Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office and BoJack Horseman.
He also featured in two standout sketches from Netflix’s I Think You Should Leave – the best television series of 2019 and the best sketch show of the last decade – as the Baby of the Year host and the furious...

Senator Cory Booker got visibly emotional during a frank interview with Conan O’Brien that is slated to air on the late-night host’s Wednesday evening program on TBS.
During the conversation, O’Brien notes that he has deliberately avoided bringing up President Trump as a topic during the show for several episodes, but told the Democratic Senator from New Jersey he can’t help but discuss him because he “has a chronic inability to demonstrate empathy” at a tough moment for the nation. O’Brien has for several days focused on reaction to recent protests nationwide over the death of George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis police.
“You can’t lead the people if you don’t love the people, and he just does not love all Americans,” said Senator Booker, who was a Democratic candidate for president before ending his campaign in January, noting that Trump’s...

Exclusive: Sam Richardson is about to feel the effects of a full moon. The Veep alum is set to star in the forthcoming horror-comedy Werewolves Within directed by Josh Ruben. The project will be based on the virtual reality video game by Ubisoft and adapted by screenwriter and bestselling author Mishna Wolff.
Similar to the “Assassins” party game, the Werewolves Within fantasy video game is set in a fictitious medieval town where a werewolf is attacking the townspeople. In a Mafia-style format, the players of the game must guess who among them is the werewolf in disguise.
Werewolves Within is being produced by Jason Altman, Margaret Boykin, Andrew Lieberman for Ubisoft Film & Television; Matt Miller, Natalie Metzger, and Benjamin Wiessner for Vanishing Angle; and Sam Richardson. The project originated from Ubisoft Film & Television’s inaugural Women’s Film and Television Fellowship where Wolff secured a script deal for her Werewolves Within film pitch.

On his recent trip to Ghana, Conan O’Brien visited one of his favorite painters — the Ghanaian movie poster artist, Daniel Anum Jasper.
Known for adding tastefully grotesque embellishments to posters for movies the majority of which he’s never seen — except for 1985’s “War Bus,” of course — Jasper took a stab at making a poster for the “Conan” show without any prior knowledge of what it’s actually about.
The result is a beautifully detailed painting featuring a shirtless Conan grabbing a dinosaur bird by the beak with his bare hands. Hovering above him is the uncannily accurate likeness of Conan’s right-hand man, Andy Richter, holding the severed head of former president Dwight D. Eisenhower in one hand (an homage to Conan’s Eisenhower mug) and a gun, pointed at the dino-bird, in the other.

In a sketch that’s already earned its lofty cult comedy status, Netflix’s “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson” puts on a lavish, televised, and very intense baby beauty pageant. As the crowd shouts death threats at toddler dressed in biker gear and judges are outed for accepting sexual favors from contestants’ parents, Sam Richardson presides over the magical chaos in a sparkling silver tuxedo — the prototypical pageant host of The 112th Annual Baby of the Year Competition.
He hits all the notes in the opening song, crooning “Look at their rolls, look at their folds!” before hitting the high chords in “Which ones can daaaance?” He embodies the audience by rolling his eyes when a judge interrupts the competition for a personal statement. He supports the babies, withstands the bedlam, and hits just the right tone for a sketch that’s purposefully all over the map.
