The Power of the Bangle
claudio_carvalho10 May 2023
A woman calls the police in her office since someone is chasing her and vanishes. Soon Harry learns that she is Kate Olsen, who was obsessed by the millionaire Vincent Lermontov, who recently committed suicide (in the first episode). Kate was investigating Vincent and Harry finds he was wearing the bangle that is trapped in him. Harry and Suri find that Kate is diabetic and was abducted by the Russian Becker that is interrogating her. Harry uses his bracelet to find Kate alive, but he is abducted with Eve by Becker. Meanwhile, Winter asks Orwell to find evidences against Harry with Lily-Anne Lau.

"A Higher Power" is another great episode of "Lucky Man", with Harry learning more about the power of his bangle. Winter wants to defeat Harry and unsuccessfully uses the limited Orwell to try to reach his purpose. Why Harry does not pay Lily-Anne Lau, instead of burning money? It is funny to see Londoners detectives that do not wear weapons to face dangerous criminals. My vote is eight.

Another gripping episode and ends with a corking cliffhanger.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode proves better than last weeks confusing one as this instalment has a more psychological thriller feel to it.

After a woman is kidnapped from the office building she works in Harry(James Nesbitt)and Suri(Amara Karen)look into the case and find out the woman Kate Olsen was investigating businessman Vincent Lermontov who was the man who jumped to his death from a high rise building and was wearing the same mysterious bracelet Harry has on his arm.She is kidnapped by Becker the nasty Russian Harry has had a confrontation with before over the bracelet.

After a associate of Becker's tries to burn both him and Suri alive on a narrow boat Harry finds a connection to the Mafia and manages to track down and save Kate with the help of DI Orwell(Darren Boyd)at a shipping yard and find her in a container.

After all this Harry is kidnapped himself by Becker along with Eve(Sienna Guillory)the odd lady involved in Harry having the bracelet and held at gunpoint in a deserted room in a house and is forced to play Russian roulette, how will the two of them get out of this alive.

I loved this episode and the darker nature of the plot with kidnappings, tension and action making up much of the episode and was a great twist to see Harry kidnapped by the same bad guy who abducted the woman he was investigating just hours earlier plus more tension was involved in the constant side plot in which Harry's superiors Orwell and the boss of the station DS Winter(Steven Mackintosh)are trying to find leads into any dodgy deals Harry has done.

The acting as ever was brilliant lead by the charismatic and very comical Jimmy Nesbitt who has in Harry Clayton quite possibly his finest character to date and is far more interesting and troubled than nearly every other character he has played thus far which is quite something as he has played some great characters in his career. He is backed by a very strong set of actors including Amara Karen who plays his trusted partner Suri who suspects Harry herself of dodgy dealings,Eve Best his strong willed wife(separated)who has her own problems,Mackintosh and Boyd who are adamant to get a case on Harry and Guillory who though isn't the strongest of actresses shares some great chemistry with Harry and hope they get together at some point.

As I say the action and psychological thriller aspects of this series really kicked into gear here and I was gripped by the narrow boat sequence where Harry and Suri are nearly burnt alive and if it wasn't for his lucky bracelet they would of been. Also loved the opening sequence where Kate is stalked in her office building by Becker,it felt like a opening scene from Luther and I loved it.The Russian roulette sequence at the end was terrific too and any scene involving RR always is gripping plus loved the shipping container sequence too.

Quite possibly the best episode yet of The Lucky Man with some real corking dark and gripping moments of dread that is left on a cliffhanger and as ever included top notch acting all round.
