It’s inevitable that whenever a film comes out and is nowhere near as successful as it should have been — be it critically or financially — that outlets will be sniffing around the carnage to see where it all went wrong. The Mummy is in an interesting place. Critically, it was absolutely demolished, and domestically, the film had an incredibly disappointing box office haul. However, on the foreign front, the film has done pretty darn well — doing so well, in fact, that they managed to secure the record of highest grossing worldwide opening for a Tom Cruise movie.
That being said, with those initial numbers now in, there’s only one direction for the movie to go in: down.

Scarlett Johansson’s Best Comedic Performances: 5 Moments That Put Her ‘Rough Night’ Role In Context
Scarlett Johansson is no stranger to the world of comedy — she is a member of the so-called Five-Timers Club, an enviable group of stars who have hosted “Saturday Night Live” at least five times — and she’s managed to emerge as an unexpected comedic Mvp without ever toplining an outright comedy. Some 20 years into her career, Johansson has yet to star in a raunchy knee-slapper that takes full advantages of her more light-leaning chops…until now. This week, that changes with the release of “Rough Night.”
An unabashedly female-centric comedy in the vein of “Bridesmaids” and “Bachelorette,” the new film from “Broad City” regulars Lucia Aniello (who makes her feature directorial debut with the film) and Paul W. Downs (who wrote it alongside Aniello and also co-stars) casts Johansson in a lead role alongside a strong ensemble of other (also very funny) women, including Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer,...

Pretty much anyone who loves music is jazzed about the upcoming 2017 Billboard Music Awards next weekend. And with any awards show, comes an awards show red carpet, which gets us thinking about some of the former flames whose passion was once so fiery that they took to the red carpet together, got cozy in their seats or got caught kissing backstage at past Billboard Music Awards. We remember when Selena Gomez couldn't keep her hands to herself near Justin Bieber, when the spark was still alive with Jordin Sparks and Jason DeRulo and when their wasn't any bad blood between...

It’s taken ten years, but Secretary director Steven Shainberg has finally followed-up Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus. The result is Rupture, a body horror-lite tale about a woman held captive as part of an experiment meant to unlock humanity’s hidden potential to evolve beyond our current state. Written by Brian Nelson (the two share story credit), its script seeks to mess with our expectations as it does its prisoner Renee (Noomi Rapace). We’re to cultivate a sense of paranoia with surveillance dominating the first act to a point where we must scratch our heads at act two’s distinct lack of it to facilitate Renee’s actions. Is this shift an unfortunate plot-hole or merely deflection to distract us? Is it hallucination or reality, trick or mistake?

Angelina Jolie is on a roll. After giving her first lecture at the London School of Economics and visiting Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, Angelina delivered an impassioned speech at the annual lecture of the Sergio Vieira de Mello Foundation at the United Nations office in Geneva, Switzerland. The 41-year-old philanthropist, who also serves as the Un Refugee Agency's special envoy, did not refer directly to Donald Trump in her speech, but she did urge leaders to reject the politics of exclusion and embrace their responsibilities and called her self a "proud American" and "internationalist." Check out a few excerpts from her speech below, and read it in full on Vanity Fair. "We are here in memory of Sergio Vieira de Mello and the 21 other men and women, most of them Un workers, who died with him in the bombing of the Un Headquarters in Baghdad in August 2003. King Kong has been an icon of cinema ever since the stop-motion gorilla stormed into the frame in 1933. With such a lofty reputation, it’s no wonder that subsequent versions of his story have struggled to get him right, fighting to reignite the potential of the franchise with mixed results. The campy 1976 vehicle faithfully resurrects the cartoonish aspects of the original in color (and proved an awkward launchpad for Jessica Lange’s career), while Peter Jackson’s fascinating 2005 effort melded old school escapism with new technology to such an extensive degree that it bled the concept dry. Just how much new escapism can you milk from one of the biggest faces in film history?

It’s safe to say that we are currently in the heyday of at-home cinema. Not only have streaming services like Netflix given us endless binge-ability, but Hulu has made it possible to rewatch TV episodes the day after they air, and with Amazon you can instantly rent or buy just about any movie, anytime, anywhere. Compare that with just a couple years ago when bookcases had to be handed over to shelves of DVDs and choosing a movie for the evening meant making a trip to Blockbuster (which, if you were curious, still exists).

People who still remember the Video Home System (VHS) tend to think of the analog format as being of distinctly crappy quality, lacking fine details and plagued by glitches, noise, and distortion. But do vintage videotapes really deserve that crummy reputation? Actually, they do. At least that’s the conclusion reached in an episode of the YouTube tech series The 8-Bit Guy called “VHS Tapes - Were They As Bad As We Remember?”
VHS might have revolutionized the home entertainment industry and changed the course of popular culture during the Reagan years, but it did no favors to the the art directors, cinematographers, and wardrobe designers who did their best to make movies look good back then. The host of The 8-Bit Guy proves this with a simple demonstration using three different editions of Back To The Future. He compares a version of the 1985 comedy ripped from Blu-ray with a...

Welcome to The Night Of's day after, when viewers are undoubtedly experiencing the slightly woozy, vaguely hungover sensation that accompanies eight weeks of investment in a TV show and the promise of a potentially earth-shaking pay-off that, in the end, can be filed under mileage-may-vary. To be fair, it was apparent very early on that this HBO miniseries wasn't likely to dominate the modern equivalent of water-cooler discussions in a way that, say, the true-crime phenomenon Making a Murderer did last winter, or the spot-the-Reagan-era-reference game that was Stranger Things...

It's one thing to set a TV series in the 1980s; it's a whole other thing, however, to make it feel like it was actually shot during the Reagan-and-Rubik's-Cube era. Matt and Ross Duffer's new Netflix series Stranger Things is full of nostalgic nods to the decade and its pop-cultural products, but it's also uncommonly rigorous about getting the details just right — whether it's the many pitch-perfect music cues, the hat-tipping nods and homages to Eighties movies, or simply nailing the cringeworthy fashion statements of the day (those Mom jeans!
