Vera Farmiga did all her own scenes as Norma's corpse rather than being substituted for a dummy like in the previous episode where Romero (Nestor Carbonell) attempts to revive Norma by performing CPR.
The female detective who questions Romero (Nestor Carbonell) at the start of the episode and later visits Norman (Freddie Highmore) has the last name Chambers (played by Molly Price). This is a homage to Sheriff Al Chambers, played by John McIntire, in Psycho (1998).
Norman (Freddie Highmore) digging up Norma's corpse is a reference to the original film Psycho (1960). Feeling guilty over murdering her, he exhumed her body and eventually mummified it.
This episode was watched by 1.50 million viewers.
A scene of Emma and Dylan conversing in their new home was cut for time, it appears on the Season 4 DVD deleted scenes.
