Most incredible episode of supernatural by far
gknovacom29 October 2015
Before I even get started, know that I'm a very harsh critic. Usually I'm picky about how well the writers and directors of supernatural tell their story, and usually I have one or two things that I would complain about. However, after watching this episode, I literally felt compelled to make sure every fan was aware of this episode's existence.

This episode was by far the most impressive and well-directed episode of supernatural to date. Maybe not the most important in level of story arcs, but it was presented in such a tone that made me look at the show in a whole new perspective.

First, the episode (other than misc. car jamming) has absolutely no soundtrack. It gave a gloomy, honest, realistic tone to the episode that Supernatural basically has never tried before. It felt incredible, almost like I was watching Breaking Bad or No Country for Old Men. The dialogue became more real, the storyline became more fluid, the action had a level of horror and suspense that never really shined through in the show's other action scenes. All just from this gloomy silence filling the episode, it made the episode feel so much more powerful in all aspects of its storytelling.

Second, I was worried watching the whole episode from the perspective of their Impala would be somewhat irritable, I was dead wrong. What this episode highlights clearly is that the Impala is not a prop, a vehicle, but a home with four doors and a roof. The Impala itself is a character, that symbolizes the entire prolific meaning of the brother's relationship to their family, and to the family business. It's an icon of great proportions that this episode brings forth into the light and it was done flawlessly.

Third, the dialogue was stupendous. I would love for whoever directed & wrote this episode to basically do the rest of the season for us. The moments the brothers had in this episode somewhat reminded me of the film End of Watch. There was a scene in the end of that film (no spoilers) of basically our two protagonists just having a hilarious and down to earth conversation. I can honestly say that with such close characters, Supernatural never really had a history of those scenes. However, this episode had several moments like that. Essentially two brothers having a bro-to-bro talk. No sopping over who's right or wrong, no arguing about who should be sacrificed for the other, no crying over spilled milk, just getting along and having a good time with each other. This came through as an element that really brought us closer to our characters. Kind of feels like we get to really "hang out" with our Winchesters, not like other episodes.

All in all, if you haven't watched it yet, go watch it. It's an episode that will go down in Supernatural history.

This season so far has been JAW DROPPING. I hope they keep it up.

Storyline like the good old episodes.
PeteB12328 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Yeah! Dean finally got his sense of humor back, they're killing monsters again, and the storyline doesn't drag on for six episodes. Sam got a haircut, so he's starting to look more believably FBI-like, and isn't haunted by demons or suffering from migraines. There was a lot more action and a lot less dialogue. The story focused on just Dean and Sam doing their monster-hunting thing, with an assist from Castiel via cellphone. But the Impala got top billing in this episode, being given an opportunity to show that it's more than just a car and more like a loyal member of the team, sort of like an inanimate angel. It drives the boys cross-country, accommodates as a motel, meeting room and weapons wagon, gets shot up, saves a hairpin so Dean can get out of handcuffs, and then slams its door on the monster's head (with Dean's help of course).

Very enjoyable episode; one hour felt like 30 minutes.

Superb
jrdonsimoni-427-876996 November 2015
In one word, phenomenal.

My favourite episodes are always the odd ones: "Weekend a Bobby's (6x04)", "The Man Who Would Be King (6x20)", "The French Mistake (6x15)", "Fan Fiction (10x05)", "Monster Movie (4x05)" or "Bitten (8x04)".

But this episode... this episode IS the very essence of "Supernatural", it IS the show. The call-back to "Swan Song (5x22)" is very cool and everything else about this episode is just perfect: it hits the perfect note in every scene, on every dialogue.

This kind of episodes are why people love TV shows, and why there are fandoms. The writers have done a beautiful job and I think this episode has just become my favourite 40mins on television.

Fans can love this episode and the writers and actors for it, and newcomers can watch an impressively well executed piece of drama that'll hook anyone for 11 seasons (and counting).

The Impala hadn't received a proper episode yet, now justice has been done.

Welcome home, Baby.

Refreshing
t-sai7712 November 2015
I have been with this show since season 1 and have been seeing how it has been slowly declining and becoming more of a Soap Opera than hunting monsters and being thrilling. Hell, I've even seen where Dean has his own intro music now. But, I am with this to the end and was glad to see the release of this episode.

What truly captured my attention to this particular episode was how it was solely focused on the character (which I admit have never thought of before) that has been with the boys since the very first episode, the 1967 Chevrolet Impala. The camera work was astounding and it still remained true to the story arc of the season (which has been getting better).

As for the acting, incredible. There was seldom any action and a lot of talking. And not the usual "But I did it to save you!" and "I didn't ask to be saved!", no no this one was how two brothers, nay, how two close friends should talk to each other. Not bashing, but understanding and leaving it in the past.

The action as well was spectacular and it felt good to see the boys go monster hunting once more, as is their jobs.

Fantastic episode, though I'm sadden as I know there won't be another quite like it for quite a while. Still, 10/10, best episode this season.

Baby...
rhino137428 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I do not usually write reviews for episodes but there was something about this one that just made me want to. If you haven't seen this episode yet turn back now and floor it, if you have you saw the same wonderful tribute I did.

The start of the show was a great view of how "Baby" came to be and gave acknowledgement to one of this series unsung heroes. This beautiful machine has carried and been carried just like the Winchester brother have done for each other since the beginning. It is just as much part of the family as their dad and in someways it has been the refuge in the storm for the boys and their father before them. It is an arsenal, a conveyance, and a comfort to just know she still runs even when beat to hell.

This episode was a fitting tribute and good story for the show, I hope the show goes another 10 years. Cheers boys keep playing those Bob Seger tunes and putting evil in its place.

Best episode in Years!
richkoop29 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
First let me say that Supernatural has held my interest since episode #1, & I don't think it has ever lost its appeal! I was concerned when season #5 ended, but it has always kept Dean & Sam worth tuning in for. That's saying a lot considering how the CW has a tendency to run shows into the ground (i.e. Smallville). With that being said, most everyone would not expect one of the best episodes in a show's history to come in Season #11. "Baby" is exactly why Supernatural has lasted as long as it has! Keep episodes like this coming & the show could outlast the network itself! Last thing, I am keeping my rating at a 10 for this episode but, if there was anything that could have made it even better it would have been Jeffrey Dean Morgan showing up. ( not that the younger papa Winchester was bad @ all, he was good in his own right) However, I guess we will all have to wait a bit longer for that awesome moment of seeing the full Winchester reunion.

What a great episode!
lopperty10 December 2015
I thought supernatural would run into a darker and less entertaining corner of the TV world. But this episode came out, " Baby"? Why not? Lets watch. It was fresh and nostalgic, dating back to the start of supernatural, this episode defines supernatural. I am very happy to say that the impala, throughout 10 seasons, became a main character in supernatural, and this episode shows it appreciation. Supernatural has outdone itself, i am confident that this show still has its fire going. People will watch and people will enjoy. I really thought supernatural would end its greatness after season 5, i was wrong. This makes fans happy and fandoms crazy. Supernatural is one of the most creative shows on TV. This episode proves my statement.

Outstanding Episode
attipton31 October 2015
I have worried that Supernatural would get stuck in a rut where all the episodes were completely based on the season story arc and they would leave behind all the Monster of the Week episodes. I especially had trouble with season 10 for this reason.

This episode was outstanding. It actually got me excited about the show again. It was nice to have an episode that wasn't completely about Rowena. The way this episode was shot, the action scenes and the humor were all done very nicely.

If you have found yourself lacking the excitement Supernatural used to give you, watch this episode. You'll be glad you did.

Great Change Of Pace
frankie951 November 2015
This episode was just great. I won't write any spoilers so this will be spoiler free. This episode takes place in the view of "Baby" Dean and Sam's car. And it was just great. Each episode has action pact fights but this was way more chill. This episode made me think of the first few seasons when they just hunted monsters. This episode had great dialogue between the brothers and I loved every second of it. You may think it's going to be boring because it's always in the car but it isn't. This is what I missed and I love they did it again. Best episode of the season and one of the better Supernatural episodes ever. It's a must watch.

The Pinnacle of Supernatural
CubsandCulture12 October 2020
Not only is this the best episode of all the series but it is one of the best hours in television of the last 30 years. Whether you are new to the series or have watched every episode repeatedly "Baby" lands perfectly as an encapsulation of the show's vibe, ethos and heart. And it does so by combining a great concept with an even more better realization. It is everything a fan of the show can ever want from an episode.

Supernatural combines a family melodrama-two brothers with a strained relationship filled with secrets-with a experimental take on legends, folklore and mythology. This is precisely what the script does in its purest form. By limiting the perspective to Impala's literal point of view the writer is forced to break up the script into radically different sequences. There is the use of French scenes (i.e. the scene changing by the entrance, exit of characters) compressed time changes, vision etc. to keep the plot moving while keeping the Impala involved. None of this feels forced and makes intelligent use in a lot of implied things the Winchesters must have done, i.e. sleep in the car, over the years. Thompson also manages to work in every call back you would expect-i.e. the legos, army men, but also "Goodnight jerk" while having it feel organic. John's cameo is quite emotional and the various mythos forwarding bits (monsters fighting the darkness) are subtle enough to make this feel like the very early monster of the week standalones. Even the monster are inventive and the humor is just *perfect* for what the episode does.

On the script level the best bit of business is how Thompson finds a way to give the Impala a secret vis-a-vis the valet and how that secret works into the climax of the episode. But as good as the script is it is the direction that makes this episode so special.

Wright's technical direction is among the best I have seen in the television format. Keeping an hour within a car is hard; not only did Wright find ways to keep the shots fresh and interesting but the overall vibe of the episode personifies the Impala. Supernatural-especially in the first few years-is really a show with two characters but the Impala has a good of a case as Bobby, Crowley, Cas etc. as being the third character. Wright sells this completely. Baby comes alive like she has never been before. This lessened in the later years but Supernatural is primary a road show and "Baby" is the most on the road the show has ever been.

Wright makes the most out the script's character interludes; the "Night Moves" sequence is pure mood and joy for the fans of the show. Jared and Jensen are give such natural, comfortable performances that only come about from playing the same characters for more than a decade. Season 11 overall has the show in notable decline but this masterpiece only comes about after years of crew, cast honing the show.

One of the best episode of Supernatural
FallsDownz20 December 2015
Okay i think it's pretty clear that if someone watch Supernatural this far must been a die-hard fan of it and yes i I'm a die-hard Supernatural fan.

But i must say Season 7-11 has not been the same with Season 1-6 i mean it's still great but not breathtaking great like before (but i admit last few episodes is great)

But this episode is really really something different the way they filmed and the way director tell story it's just great, utilize camera work and the theme of episode perfectly and the most important thing is to bring back the 'old memories' of Supernatural back the heavy family business talk with real heart i guess it's because this episode has a lot of time to actually sit-down and talk while others is rushing it will be even greater if they bring back old cast like Jaffrey Dean Morgan (if that happen i will just cry)

Overall this is just one of the best episode of Supernatural i think every die-hard fan will love it, it's the episode that brings good old memories back fill with heart and soul and it's the episode that kinda let us (and the Winchesters themselves) catch a breath see what's going on around them this is just great i think this kind of episode should have more often in the future to let the viewers look back and look forward at the same time without rushing anything. 9/10

Brilliant episode but not a favourite
ysabelkid4217 October 2020
Yes, it's a fantastic episode in terms of acting, direction, grit. It's great to see things from Baby's point of view, finally.

Still, as much as this is an excellent episode, I couldn't get into it. It was just ... miserable. Yes, some good quips, the dialogue was some of the best ever, the music was fantastic.

But this one is not going on my rewatch list, and I honestly cannot understand how this could be ranked as the second-best of the lot.

I haven't seen every episode
Clockwork_OJ18 November 2015
...but I could tell right away this episode was really different.

Realistic, gritty, even terrifying in its economical storytelling style and very different from the other episodes I've managed to catch before.

Outstanding!

I was actually reminded (for some reason) of some of the early film noir movies I've seen that showed all of the action from the criminals point of view.

More like this would be welcome. More invention and character work, less over the top effects.

I love baby
ragirl-8228110 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Not having the camera leave the car would ruin most other episodes on most other shows but not this one. The car is like an actual character in the show and at the end when she crashes you wince as if she could feel pain. Sam shoots out the back windshield and you're like nooooo. The episode was that well done. Love the scene where dean stumbles out of the roadhouse and says mistakes were made. My favorite was the whole scene were the deputy ambushes him and dean has to shot, behead and put the head in the cooler and the monster still isn't dead. Each time he thinks he killed it he's so proud of himself then we hear more growls and dean is like OK let's try this again. Castiel's cute condescending tone as he keeps telling dean that is yet again wrong is adorable.

Strange but inspired
blackmagpie-6236830 April 2018
One of the best episodes of supernatural. It may start slowly for some viewers but worth watching to the end especially if you are familiar with "baby" and the general story line. This episode will lead you from laid back and chilled to raw violence, all peppered with a little dry humor. Great bonding, great music, great scenes, great camera work and all from a unique perspective, that of the car's. Loved the reverse 180!

Dean gets his sense of humour back
NatashaJAmos201526 December 2018
After a very dark season its great to see that Dean gets his sense of humour back. Teasing his little brother and singing along to the radio. I've missed it! And the episode itself is excellent and funny. If scary things are scared of the Darkness then the Darkness must be truly horrible.

One of the best episodes of... anything, really
minxiepinx12 January 2021
Superb. I'm late to the game with Supernatural (having binged it 3 times in 2020 from scratch), and had heard of this episode. I expected a lot, and was still impressed. Interesting, exciting, funny, and the way it was shot was fantastic.

For a show to be going 11 years and still produce an episode this good is almost unheard of.

Baby might be the most important vehicle in a tv show ever (which we already knew in Swan Song).

Brilliant episode, and very unique

I'd vote 10, but...
Aries_Primal17 October 2023
As a fan of old school cars, Baby's always on my top 5. Pleasure seeing she gets the deserved attention. Great idea behind this episode, worst possible execution of the plan.

I am not sure if this is some kind of producer's tactics or a coincidence to choose the most unpleasant actors and make a close shot of them, but it was disgusting to watch all those terrible teeth and sweaty faces. Baby deserves more, as we do too. I know you need to make it realistic, but in a first place blood doesn't have jelly structure and doesn't stay pink for hours. It's not pink at all! And when you cut the artery the pressure is the highest and blood sprays from the neck, it's not a clean cut, also there are bones, not a bloodless hole. Damn it, those things are important!

A look through Baby's eyes
joel4dp17 November 2015
Just when I thought the show was getting stale they give us a fresh perspective and a funny, brutal, personal and poignant episode that lifts series as it left out all the melodrama and let the guys just be guys. Told from the Impala's point of view the story highlights how Baby's has been a integral part of the team and has saved the day on a few occasions. The camera work is in your face but might sickeningly so and the dialog is spot on and moves us forward in the season story arch while not rehashing tired themes of familiar family squabbles between the brothers. This episode also expanded the character definitions of our heroes which was great to see happening at last. It is extremely rare for me to write a review of a television show but this episode deserves to be watch by anyone who loves great drama. I hope the writers take these comments to heart and get the show firmly back on track.

Truly amazing. One of the best episodes to date.
heshfresh24 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I'll keep this short, and hopefully, sweet. This is one of the greatest Supernatural episodes to date. The fact that it came after 11 seasons is a true testament to creators/writers of the show. I never thought an episode from the perspective of a car could be so brilliant. Truly amazing stuff. Very worthy of it's 9.6/10 rating.

Some of most excellent shots, in terms of cinematography, that show has put on display. Dean's constant failed attempts at getting some form of "Were-pire" or "Ghoul-pire" over, made for some great chuckles.

As much as this story was told in a "Monster-of-the-week" format, it's by far the one of best to do it yet.

Loved every minute. The scene when Dean plays Bob Seger's "Night Moves" is definitely one my favorite SPN scenes of all time. So many good feels.

New comfort episode unlocked🔓
llawliet-673558 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I don't normally write reviews, but this episode was just perfect in my eyes. Everything was just right.

The whole atmosphere was just way more relaxed, and the relationship between Sam and Dean was way less forced, and it seemed like they weren't actually acting or remembering lines, but actually being siblings.

There were also some of them rare wholesome moments, that we normally don't get to see that often, and also Castiel calling on the phone and asking about "the Netflix", was just damn cute.

Although I was first a bit sceptical of this filming-idea, in the end I really liked the way, this episode was directed. It just felt like the viewers were instantly part of the story and I really wish more episodes in this style would follow.

(Also call me Roger Taylor, cause I'm freaking in love with that car.)
