Good Concept, Bad Execution
Assault Rigs has a lot of good put into its audio and visual design, but the game play borders on tedious and tiring. While it's interesting to use hover tanks in a non-military setting, making a game where the player uses them to collect crystals and jump ramps dampens a lot of thrills the action could've offered. The combat boils down to cover-based shooting with the insipid use of re-spawning enemies and destructible weapon pick-ups (that don't act as Smart-Bombs when destroyed), slip-shot Platforming segments over uneven surfaces and shoddy maneuverability with apparently sticky walls. It needed more of the nameless young Rig Jockey woman from the opening and ending, a plot less reminiscent of Grind Stormer/Kid Chameleon with something actually at stake besides a measly sponsorship and a lot more physics tweaking. As it stands, it's a challenging game with too many mazes and an unnecessary timer for each one. At best, it just looks good with some unique color and details as the stages progress, good sound design and a groovy/somewhat calming soundtrack. In other words: Skip it.
