I'm bringing horror back...yeah!
roch12415 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Loved it. Been a loyal fan since the beginning and having forced myself through the mess that was Hotel I prayed and prayed that Ryan would get back to basics and bring back the reason why everyone fell in love with this franchise to begin with... HORROR!

This is what the viewers have all been waiting for. A fresh concept, a fresh format, and the jump out of your seat moments that featured in Murder House and Asylum. I must have jumped at least ten times throughout this first episode, brilliant.

I love that the theme has been kept a secret, and that the remainder of the series is still shrouded in mystery. Fantastic to see some of our favourite actors and actresses returning (still no Jessica boohoo) and great to see some new faces join the cast.

I really hope that the suspense, the shocks and the scares continue, and that the rest of the season builds and grows from this great foundation block of a first episode. I'm certainly counting the days till episode 2. Really excited for what is to come, and pleasantly surprised with this new direction. I really think it will work providing the HORROR remains transparently integral throughout the season, fingers crossed!

Action packed
geeboy3731 August 2018
Probably the most action packed first episode of AHS thus far but as some of the reviews say it was kind of typical of a horror movie. Regardless all the actors are so good that is was consistently enjoyable and I'm sure it's a setup for the rest of the season. I do agree that Cuba isn't the most believable actor but I'm giving him another shot after his excellent portrayal of OJ Simpson.

New and Daring

The season 6 premiere is something we've never seen before on the show and it might turn some people off but I was personally very entertained.

The directing and cinematography work is exquisite, making good use of the house to create great shots that feel like a documentary while also still managing to scare the audience.

The cast continues to amaze me with their performances although some feel underused. The episode takes its time to draw you in and starts off the season with promise.

I thought it was good
filipejsp-0543815 September 2016
I actually liked this episode, it's fresh. The story is intriguing and it looks real, like something that could happen to anyone. The direction they chose to do it is the most shocking part, having the story be told by each character on it's own perspective is great. Besides, the fact that we didn't have a clue about what the season was going to be about kept me hooked for the entire episode to try and figure what the hell was going on. So like i said it's refreshing and new. Nothing like we've seen before. Let's see if they keep up with the intensity and the constant creepy factors.

Overall, i loved it.

Mysterious and Intriguing first episode!
martinlutherfan15 September 2016
I was extremely relieved that the first episode of this season wasn't over the top and crazy like in Season 5 Hotel. Last year I was so turned off by the pornographic scene featuring the demon forcing himself sexually on one of the characters I almost didn't watch it. This year it appears the creators, writers, and even actors have gone back to what made this TV show so great and that is the character development and a sense of building a story with mystery with some good scares. As I was watching the first episode I was taken back to the first season a bit by the situation the couple found themselves in and by them moving into a new place. It seems similar to Murder house, but also felt comparable to movies like The Strangers, or Straw Dogs. I love the location and the theme so far and I can't wait to see where they are going to go this season

Back to its roots
verrucktcarlos16 September 2016
I liked the start of this season, it felt like it's back to its roots, it actually tries to be scary. Yes, the documentary style is a little odd, and it seems it is going to be like that for the rest of the season, but it was not bad either, I'm thinking that perhaps in one episode the actors will meet the actual people, and some weird stuff will happen. And what I really liked is that it was focused on ONLY ONE STORY, what made Hotel so so bad was that there were sooooo many characters and sooo many stories, each episode was basically the backstory of each character, they should have focused on the ten commandments killer only. In short, this season looks promising.

Just what AHS needed.
yamurbina15 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I felt AHS was under a formula since Season 1 to 5. And this new format is a fresh start. Season 5 was the worst, because of the Jessica Lange dependence the show had develop and again, the formula it was following each season and this season I feel made changes to change all of that. I guess I would've lost interest in AHS if they had continue with the same format. Sarah Paulson was excellent as always, as well as Lily Rabe and Angela Basset. This season has brought moresuspense, which is something I always wanted, since I was tired of the sometimes obviously fake blood of previous seasons. It's great that a show after a long time decides to change and for good. Definitely worth the wait for this season.

Promising start
hakos00716 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
After the previous season, this was a really good first episode. Season 5 was in my opinion, the worst season so far, it had good parts for example the Halloween part, but most of them was not my taste.

*SPOILER*

This episode started with a very new idea, which is kind of a crime and investigation series. It is very odd but i assume viewers can settle in with it. The scene was a little bit cliché, but in ghost movies the directors can not make complicated characters because they run out of time and with maximum 2 hours run time is not enough for a proper character development. So in this case they have a chance. Back to the interviewer part of the story, i hope that it has a meaning and a twist, because it is kind of boring that we can assume that they will survive the events. In the first episode there are a lot of scenes which were part of other horror classics for example the voodoo sticks, that was a little bit unoriginal. I also don't like the fact that they spoiled a major thing with the title because many people could hear about the Roanoke happenings... It was sweet that I have not seen Gaga because i do not like her performance at all, but i hope she will improve in this season. The other characters were fine, Cuba is a big surprise, really hope he will be an important character until the end of the season.

Fascinating Mise En Scene: Narration of "Re-Enactment"
bbelledonna17 September 2016
Creating an intriguingly different type of presentation of a horror story based in late 16th century Roanoke Island, NC, Murphy and Fulchuk have been creatively innovative, yet again.

The fact that in "Chapter 1," people of color, headed by top talents, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Angela Bassett, are the intelligent, working, main players of a Black cast predominant episode, with the Caucasian's either being the neo-confederate, "ZZ Top wannabes," (brilliant script line, that) uncouth, degenerate "rednecks," or good for nothing 'bad old boy' so called 'police' who do anything but protect and serve, the loose serial rapist suicider and a Los Angeles hazing gang and assailant, all very true to real life in US society Caucaians today; then, add the non-Black spookological characters too (the Polks, et al), and it IS quite likely to have an impact of revealing those viewers who believe they are not, but really are, racists from those who truly are not bigots! Brilliant! I say do it.

Bravo to Murphy and Fulchuk and every player in Chapter 1 for putting US racism up front and center, in our faces. As Streisand alluded to when presenting the 1st woman director, Kathryn Bigelow, an Oscar (for "The Hurt Locker"), after being overlooked herself a half dozen times(!), 'well, at long last' (paraphrasing). That's how I come away from experiencing "Chapter 1."

Who cares in the least if Lily Rabe looks like Sarah Paulson? Rabe's narration's clearly telling the story Sarah Paulson's 're-enacting'. Doing so clarifies the feelings of Paulson's Mrs. Miller. This technique serves to help me empathize all the more with Mrs. Miller's senses of fear.

Similarly, Andre' Holland need not look like Cuba Gooding, Jr. (who does? gorgeous as he is!) to describe the feelings that Gooding's quite aptly conveying through his incarnation of Mr. Miller.

This rather unique style of creating a 'story inside of a story' (Mise en Scene) is daringly different on TV, so much so the doing thereof leaves very little to be mistaken. The writers and directors are making sure the events being depicted can be understood by an 8th grade American mind! (i.e. the scientific average of the intellect of American TV viewers).

Mind you, neither the creators nor the actors are "talking down" to us as an audience. They are trying, instead, to bring us along with them, at their own levels of understanding. Should we, as viewers be the least bit surprised that this cast and crew want us to appreciate human social diversity? I think not. The previous 5 seasons do a heap more than 'suggest' otherwise.

The substance of the historical 16th century story is obviously well researched, from this Anthropologist's academic researcher's point of view. Murphy alluded to Season 1 lending to what Season 6 would focus more intensely upon: "Croatoan," the American Indian word left where the North Carolinian, Roanoke Islanders had once been living before they mysteriously disappeared over 400 years ago.

After viewing this episode 12 times, many scenes in super slow motion, then talking with co-viewers in my home, to gather their impressions (which I highly recommend doing), I'm awed, intrigued, fascinated and assuredly looking forward to "Chapter 2." In the grand old fashion of Sir Alfred Hitchcock, the British Master of Suspense, Murphy, Fulchuk, cast and crew wisely succeeded keeping secret the very theme, story line, adaptation and historical fact bases of what I hope will keep playing out through the remaining 9 episodes to come.

The mystery of the late 16th century, North Carolinian, Roanoke Islanders disappearing is one that still invites archaeological researchers to the geographical location to make new, recent discoveries where the Islanders were last known to be.

It takes imagination, combined with quite open-minded creative intellect, the kind that's willing to allow a spookological story based on a very mysterious occurrence in Southern US history, now brought 4.75 centuries forward into the beginning of the 21st century, to re-open a real unsolved mystery by exposing it as horrifying.

Perhaps the real horror is that 21st century supremacism of every kind is horrifying!

Bring it on creatively, in full glorious diversity, telling it like it is socially right here, right now, in the nearby South, where the actual events took place. Let's all discover if, as Americans, we are actually American or latent fascist supremacists.

(Oh how I can just imagine the myriad of viewers squirming in their stirred up discomfort, perhaps for the 1st time, just beginning to realize we're not quite as open-minded, open-hearted and cutting edge a Westernized nation as we'd like to believe and ever so arrogantly boast).

When a work of creative performance art has the capacity to create social change it is cutting edge.

Anybody?!?
jmdarden-251023 September 2019
I watched the first few seasons of AHS when they first aired but am just starting Season 6 now, Sept. 2019, a bit behind schedule to say the least. Having read the User Reviews before starting and almost halfway through Episode 1, I am surprised none of the reviews stated the obvious. There are many comparisons and similarities pointed out by other reviewers except for the most glaring one. Can anybody say The Shining....????

Did the Mystery Payoff for Season 6 of A.H.S.?
NileFortnerBoogieBuddha95419 September 2016
American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare (Did the Mystery Payoff?)

The first thing, with this first episode of the sixth season of American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare, is this is definitely the comeback of this show. American Horror Story is indeed my favorite show. I have watched every season, seen multiple episodes, binge watch more times than I can count, and have always loved and supported the series. Many people, including myself, can argue that after the third season (Coven) the show has lost some of its value. In addition, many people believe that the last season (Hotel) was the worst season. Even though I have enjoyed every season, I do believe that Hotel was a huge step back. The story was flimsy, there were not too many likable characters, and I started to question myself if my favorite show is still worth investing in. We have checked into the murder house, the asylum, the coven, the freak show, and even the hotel. Now we check into the Roanoke nightmare, and I could not be happier. As a HUGE fan of the show, deep down in my heart I believe the first chapter in My Roanoke Nightmare is the best first episode of American Horror Story ever!

The sixth season of American Horror Story was a total mystery. They didn't tell us the theme, the premise, not even a complete cast list was given in advance to get us excited. This was genius marketing, because it keeps people wondering, questioning, and wanting the mystery to be revealed. The mystery paid off!

I remember when the first season of American Horror Story came out. I loved everything about it. The writing, the concept, cinematography, the cast, and story. Back then, if you told people you watch American Horror Story they would shrug their shoulders, and say, "okay, good for you. That's nice." Now, especially after this episode, it should be why aren't you watching American Horror Story? It is an injection of fresh blood, fresh storytelling, and a fresh concept. In one episode, this show has successfully delivered interesting characters, madness, and chills and it all feels real. I can't wait to see what the show does next. Based on the random teasers we got, I'm wondering if every episode will be a different topic. Alternatively, will we continue the story of the Roanoke nightmare? Whatever happens, I am glad the show is mixing things up, taking chances, and has already made of for the somewhat lackluster season Hotel in just one episode!

So these are my final thoughts on American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare Chapter 1. Welcome to Roanoke, welcome back American Horror Story! I literally have zero complaints about the show. I loved every second of it, and I'm sure most people will as well. It has tension, scares, amazing performances, and had me on the edge of my seat. I am more than proud to give American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare Chapter 1 a…

10/10!

American Blair Witch Story
MovieloverIreland15 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
So so start to the new season. With it being season 6 and seeing so many 666 imagery I was really expecting a devil themed story for this season but what we have been presented with is a send up of mockumentary "reality" horror shows.

The Good : Beautiful cinematography and lighting worthy of a cinema release.

: A more focused story than recent seasons with less rambling subplots.

: The backwoods setting evokes a sense of unease and the isolation helps create more tension i.e. the bathtub scene.

The Bad : Having the two leads tell the story via interview drains any tension as we know they ultimately survive.

: Evan Peters is credited but i did not see him in show.

: I would have preferred Lily Rabe and Sarah Paulsen to have swapped roles.

For all the failings i still enjoyed this season opener more than any since Asylum and will tune in next week to see where story takes us.

Disappointing
wworsham-210-76778515 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The Mockumentary format is a huge fail. It's distracting and a waste of some good actors to just have them sitting there telling the story. Other than Cheap jump scares there's nothing here. LEE is shoved in for no apparent reason. Hopefully it gets better, but it could quickly lose my interest.

If the promise of this season tying in all the others comes true, it could be worth watching. That would be a nice touch, but I'm afraid based on this first episode that the attempt to do so will be hackneyed and rushed. Trickling in the connections a little bit each season was much more of a pleasant surprise that what I'm afraid is forthcoming. Time will tell.

Gory, disturbing, sex, obscene images
kcangel27 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Wow...wow...wow... Where do I begin with Roanoke. Me and my friend would come home from our class just to watch this amazing show and Roanoke didn't disappoint us. For some reason we are tons of popcorn and huge meals during the show which was a bad idea because may I say there is sex and very disturbing sex. Ryan Murphy truly shows terror in this season and he does a good job portraying all the characters. He also makes them all unlikeable because spoiler alert everyone dies. It's American Horror Story and you can't have AHS without a little gore and violence and every single character dead.

Ryan Murphy put up teasers for this season making us first think it was Mist which I was excited for. However, it changed to Roanoke and to even make this scarier it's based of a real life Horror story. I guess a bunch of people went missing and natives killed everyone, do your research before watching this season because it's a certain time in history and I don't know everything. However, this show, this freaking show is amazing. This season had me on my toes, stressed out, anxious, nervous, and made me jump a million times. The way Ryan Murphy created the twist of how they were actually on their own show is absolutely genius, genius. And every single evil demonic figure comes to life and destroy them, I'm shook. I was shook and this season man was gory, sexual, violent, entertaining with unlikeable characters, but still. Shelby is annoying with her "MAAAAATTT" "ROOOORYYY" I feel like most people already seen the show so spoiler alert everyone dies and the badass girl with three tits from freak show was alive. The ending really didn't satisfy me though, but it was a emotional, rollar coaster ride. Watch if you dare because man this show will give you nightmares about Pigs and the blood moon! Next time you see a blood moon run

Disappointing, but intriguing enough to continue watching
alienf3tus14 September 2016
I was skeptical for this season since Hotel was a huge disappointment and as of now the worst season of TV I've seen. Not much actually happened this episode, which was also a big disappointment. It felt like a rehashing of Murder House, but with the fleshed out characters taken away. I get that it was supposed to be similar to those ghost-experience reenactment shows, which is why the acting wasn't as great as we've seen before, but that still bothers me. The cinematography was brilliant, as expected from Nelson Cragg, who also did People v. OJ. Nearly every shot looked like it could be framed. I'll keep watching if only for this reason, but I am also at least somewhat interested to see where the story goes.

Would be a 9 but what accent is that?!??
Kerriecarlisle4 August 2022
I love this season. It's daring and different and super creative.

I'd say this season is two parts. Episodes 1 - 6 is the build up and 6 - 10 is the blood bath.

This maybe my favourite season BUT American horror story casts can not do an English accent.

If Kathy Bates is supposed to be English it's all over the place. As a Brit I had a hard time grasping what she is even saying. It's sometimes a little bit Yorkshire, sometimes Scottish, sometimes Irish, sometimes Welsh and it all sounds like she is trying to do it with a comic Jamaican accent.

Great plot ... appalling accents
mynxii8 February 2019
I adore AHS and I love the differences between the storylines and feel of each of the different series ... but please please please get a better voice coach ... I'm British and after 5 episodes I've finally figured out Cathy Bates etc are supposed to be speaking with Yorkshire accents ... i think ! I'm used to speaking to people from all around the world with different accents and levels of English speaking competence but this is near unintelligible at times ... such a shame for one of my favourites ...

S6.E1 - The Horror Is Back [8.6/10]
panagiotis199329 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(S6. E1) My Live Reaction / Review for American Horror Story Season 6 Episode 1 ''Captair 1''. Its raining teeth? What the hell is going on? Is this a ghost story or demonic? The man is about to travel. Im sure all kinds of crazy stuff will happen. Someone tried to drown her, what the hell? Was it a human or a ghost? I need answers. How can they be sure that some hillbilly is doing all this? Putting cameras everywhere actually sounds smart. Ok I see people with torches so I guess its nothing about ghosts and demons. Angela Bassett's character seems interesting. Being lost in the woods is really scary. What is going on? Is the forest alive or something? I love how the episode ended, really creepy. My rating is 8.6/10.

Format is Off-Putting, But Interesting So Far
Dkfarmer2115 September 2016
American Horror Story fans have been waiting with bated breath for months now to find out what the theme of this season would be. And while a lot of the Nancy Drew types out there had already figured out the Roanoke connection months ago, I don't think anyone expected the show's change in format.

Set up like one of the "A Haunting in..." shows that you see on television today, this story is narrated by the people involved in what happened, with dramatizations being played out by the other principle cast members. The format is off-putting in the sense that American Horror Story has never been afraid to punish it's main characters, and now we at least know that these characters survive whatever hell they encounter. And given some of the choices the characters made in this first episode, you could be forgiven for thinking they wouldn't last long. But now we know they do.

That sucks a lot of tension out of the story instantly. And that's not fun or helpful for a show with "horror" in the title. There is also too much of a bounce back and forth between narration and dramatization. It felt like as soon as the narration got interesting, we'd move on to a dramatization, and whenever the dramatization got interesting, the show would cut back to narration. Hopefully the writers will break out of this format in future episodes, though it seems unlikely at least for now.

Season six's premiere wasn't a total let down though, even if it felt like it ended a few minutes early. The acting so far is superb and there were a few genuine, nerve-wracking moments. The location is creepy, and seeing Chaz Bono as a backwoods hillbilly was certainly something new. The writing feels tighter than in past seasons and something about this feels very "real," which is welcome after season five's "Hotel" and it's outlandish story lines. There is enough here to keep me interested, but only time will tell how successful the new format is.

I'm really hoping this is tongue in cheek and not serious as this is hilariously over acted, overly dramatic stereotypical "horror" If it is intentionally humorous they are doing a marvellous job!

An abomination.
TonightTurnYourWeaponsToSnow15 September 2016
After tons of backlash for lack of story and unrealistic characters, Ryan Murphy gave in and slopped us some good old' Murder House with this premiere... except there's a big difference: it's all a big mockumentary.

This is clear evidence that Ryan Murphy and his writers cannot write a good story anymore. They kicked Gaga out of this episode (fortunately) and that worked well, but after all, Ryan Murphy is nothing without big actors! That would mean he would have to tell a story!

He kicked Evan Peters out too. Oh no! Now he can't appeal to the teen girls! Now he is forced to write a good story without straight up pandering by forcing Evan down our throats!

What will he ever do? Aha! Bingo! He has thought of an idea! He is clearly incapable of telling a story, and without popular cast to rely on, he has to think of some sort of solution. A mockumentary! Let's have the characters sit down and TELL THE AUDIENCE THE ENTIRE STORY instead of pacing it nicely, not rushing it and letting the story unfold.

This premiere was an absolute disgrace to television. Everything was RUSHED! The writers are so terrible that they couldn't make a nice 42 minute introduction episode featuring just our 2 leads and some nice scares - they had to squeeze Angela Bassett in there. Her character was SO shoehorned and her backstory was rushed and forced.

This is a running problem on American Horror Story - force characters and subplots in at the start, have nothing to do in later episodes, later episodes then flop as a result.

Yes, I deem "Chapter 1" of Season 6 as a complete catastrophe.

The theme? What theme? Where is it? We waited for months, watching countless teasers, theorizing, predicting, only to get... nothing? We got nothing.

Where is the intro? I wanted a bold intro with a confirmed theme. I wanted the theme to be written across my screen.

American HORROR STORY: ______

But where was it? Nowhere to be found?

This premiere was an abomination. Disgraceful episode. At least it was kind of scary and built up tension, something which the writers always fail to do, but lots of tense moments were ruined by running commentary from the annoying clown leads in mockumentary format.

Delete this episode!

Characters are too stupid to care about
PaulMemoli16 September 2016
These people are idiots. They are too dew-eyed to be wary of Los Angeles, and then they relocate to "Deliverance" style back country and buy a huge home, on 10 acres of land, despite the hillbilly pork-brothers spitting on them. They never question why the building was empty in the first place. I don't like these morons. They deserve everything that will be happening to them. I doubt that I will be able to stomach another episode. You know, writing 10 full lines of a review for a film that rubbed you the wrong way on an emotional, as well as an intellectual level, is just cruel and unusual punishment! How about adding a like and a dislike button?
