Nice atmosphere, but lame mystery

"El crimen del abrevadero" is the first episode of new TV series "El Caso. Crónica de sucesos", and as with many pilots, it is interesting enough, but with many many problems.

A woman is found in a well, and the journalists of sensationalist newspaper "El Caso" start a parallel investigation trying to discover who is really behind the death of the woman, the daughter of an American army officer. It all becomes quite complicated, as it was bond to happen, but the journalists won't give up till they find the truth.

This first episode is tonally uneven, but has a nice atmosphere and an OK representation of the Francoist Spain of the era, with politics, military and censorship all trying to work against the workers at "El Caso". In that respect the shows does a good enough job, and the actors also are efficient enough, even if some of the acting is far from top-notch.

On the down side, the mystery is not much of a mystery, and it is actually a little bit lame. The show seems to be more about atmosphere than mystery, but still, the plot has some holes and the development of the episode is a little bit silly, as its attempts to action.

For people with time (Spanish TV episodes range from 75 to 90 minutes) it's a good enough start to a new series. But it could be much better and pales in comparison to other mystery/representation of a past era's shows.
