Quirky Irish comedy set in 80s
annoconnor-149977 June 2018
I am currently watching 3rd season of Bridget and Eamon and have grown to love it. Whether it's Eamons stupidity or Bridget mad notions brings me right back to my childhood. Don't know if an American audience would get this humor but I certainly do and I find even if I'm in bad mood it always makes me chuckle. If you are wondering whether to try this out give it a few episodes as it does grow on you very similar to Farher Ted once you get to know characters

Just fell in love with this...

I respectfully disagree with the 1 star review - yes you're meant to think Eamon is a moron and like all characters, the great ones are never the main/lead roles (See Ep 3 - Frank in the bed!). Having grown up in the 80's with Irish family members on both sides of the border, there are references and idiosyncrasies within the script that have kept me chuckling and the black-market condom scenes were brilliant. Comparing Bridget & Eamon to Seinfeld is pointless, as B&E isn't trying to be intelligent. Given the similarities I've seen between the characters and my own Irish family members I imagine a great proportion of the script is inspired by their own experiences. The costume, titles, cinematography help paint the 80's vibe - which I love. The show reminds a little of Father Ted.

Absolutely Hilarious

I also have to disagree with the one star review. Though if that person had started with the first episode instead of the second I think their thoughts might have been much different. Every series takes time to find their rhythm, and the level and quality between episodes will always vary. This series is absolutely brilliant, and is a wonderful mix of zaniness, hilarity and quirkiness. For us yanks it does take a bit to get accustomed to the Irish accents, and some of the societal references will be lost on those outside Ireland and the UK, but anyone willing to invest a little time and patience will be well rewarded. I couldn't recommend this series more highly.

Hysterical!

I must also respectfully disagree with the one star review. This show is funny and clever, and completely over the top (in the best possible way). I watched the first episode with little hope, but then found myself binge watching the entire season in one day.

In my opinion, Bridget & Eamon is one of the funniest shows to ever come out of Ireland -- give it a try.

A right fecking poke at-the-old-world comedy.
chriskoczka-6447316 August 2017
As a Yank that lived in Ireland for half a year in the the 70's and visited in the 80's and in 2010, I find "Bridget & Eamon" to be a right proper comedy. From gregarious to the subtle, humor abounds, minute to minute, in this old-world-Irish send-off. Rarely can so many clichés be acceptably jammed packed into 24 minutes with such great results. I highly recommend this 5 star comedy. It's well written and nicely performed.

The wife hates it
jordan224028 March 2020
Came across this while searching for 'Irish Comedies' around St. Pat's day here in the states. First episode had me laughing out loud, and it's gotten funnier with each season (working my way through 3 now). Yes, it's silly and ridiculous, which is likely why my wife isn't fond of it, but it's a very funny 'silly and ridiculous' as opposed to just being 'silly and ridiculous.' Perhaps I'd compare it to "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" to a somewhat lesser extreme. The wife isn't too fond of that one either.

Pretty Good
rssunjoy2 March 2017
Found this on Hulu when I was checking out which programs each station offered. This show is a hidden gem, at least here in the states. I'll be honest it took a while before I could start finding it funny. Sort of like a slow burn. But after the second or third episode I really started to enjoy it. Now I have gone back and watched the series twice and love every episode. It's a little on the nose but so well done.

Laugh out loud funny.

This show is fantastic. I wouldn't watch it if the wee ones are listening but it's worth watching if you want to laugh. Try one episode and you'll be hooked.

and a half

Which again is really good for my reviews. I have totally run out of things to watch and watched the hilarious London Irish the other night and this came up. I must say watching the trailer I didn't really think I'd like it.... But I did! It's very funny. Tho very quick slapstick type humour that if you aren't familiar with heavy quick talking Irish accents you may miss a lot of the humour. I watched about 5 episodes ( it gets tedious after a while) and went onto find another extremely funny UK comedy Friday night dinners which I'll review next. Great show tho and the episodes aren't that long. Totally recommend.

Father Ted for the 21st Century
szweda-1855510 February 2020
It has been a long time since the last Father Ted. For fans of that show B&E have come to save our souls but make our sides ache just like Dougal and co always did. What are you waiting for? Tune in and forget the world...

A Show Bad Enough for American TV
Savarin_Sam27 November 2021
Utter Dreck! A show that portrays Irish Catholics in all the worst ways. If this show portrayed Irish Protestants in the same manner as it does Catholics, there would have been numerous bombings in Belfast, Dublin, and London. They would have been excused by the legacy media, and a hue and cry would have arisen from the politicians and the social media warriors. A fine example of how political correctness is used in modern society: protect a favored group, and attack another non-favored group. One needs to understand that this is a relatively new show, not something from the 70s. If this show had portrayed Muslims, Protestants or Atheists with the same brush it does Catholics, it would have been taken off the air after one episode. Time spent arranging canned goods alphabetically in your cabinets is better spent than watching this crap.

Bridget & Eamon are brilliant!
emmymaschke-428-5882028 August 2018
I'm a huge Anglophile in the States. I've watched a lot of English and Scottish shows but not seen a lot of Irish shows. Bridget & Eamon is a brilliant show. The characters are eejits but so loveable! I've not laughed so much in a long time! I grew up in the 80's so I have a memory of Ireland through the 1980's and the writing is just grand! Hope you all get a 4 season!

You don't have to be Irish to like the madness
fopfopfop25 March 2019
I don't do lengthy in depth reviews I keep things simple overall. An 8 for tv for me is a 7 for a movie (tv versus movie seem to be on a different scale)(tv 8 means good). This show is very funny, it's silly, it's slightly weird. If you like slightly odd shows and are feeling nostalgic for the 80's you may like this. Some of the dialog is hard to understand as an American. But it is just funny characters doing funny things. It also reflects real life in the 80s in Ireland. The first episode involves selling black market condoms, and they play it out like they are dealers in the hood a little bit. Turns out condoms were in fact illegal in Ireland from 80-85. Other shows of similar appeal-father ted, spaced, the young ones, man seeking woman, kids in the hall, trial and error, and married with children most aptly. If you liked any of those you may like this show.

This is NOT American comedy
bob-mcnamara29 October 2018
If you are looking for insipid laugh-tracked New York style comedy, keep turning the dial.

If you want an amazing poke at ridiculous Irish comedy, have an Ace bandage at the ready for the stitch you will get from laughing and have a sense of humor you will love this show.

It's Right Craic
panaceamedia24 October 2022
Peg and Al move to '80s Ireland, have 3-5 more children, ignore them 99% more, and have sketch show like adventures such as simultaneously performing MacGyver and Golden Girls at the gunpoint of not-IRA, but IRA-adjacent, like how lettuce is part of a taco but is not a taco. The analogy is not supposed to make sense.

The deeper into this series you go, the more they give up on any sitcom continuity and it becomes more like a sketch show with a sitcom thread holding it together. It makes for more ridiculousness but also prevents feeling sad for any of the characters' misfortunes.

Their friends are a hoot, and at first I thought I recognized Frank and the Father, but I was mistaken. I blame Airwolf and Concepta's cleavage. Fun supporting cast, and just a delightful, often outrageous, sketchy sitcom.

I looked up the two leads and was disappointed they haven't done much since! I'd gleefully watch a Season 5 or another project of theirs. If they showed Bridget's brand of cigarettes every time she smoked, they could have funded projects for life.

If you are binge watching the series with some friends, you must take a shot every time they say "choppy-changey".

Subtitles were most welcome.

Hilarious and absurd
malpasc-391-91538024 August 2021
Being in my early 40s I remember the 1980s as a child. I'm not from Ireland (I'm from the UK) so some of the more specific cultural references, especially around Catholicism kind of bypass me slightly but I can totally appreciate the hilarity of this show.

In the UK the first 3 series are shown on GOLD and the 4th series was on Roku TV and might also be on Amazon Prime.

Its worth a look. The humour goes from full on ridiculous to little subtle visual gags. Pretty much every episode has laugh out loud hilarious moments. The only episode I don't particularly enjoy is the 7th episode of series 3 which is set on St Stephen's Day (Boxing Day to British people) and has Eamon's mother visit. The premise of this episode is ridiculous even by the standards of this series! I'm knocking one star off for that episode!

Jennifer Zamparelli is brilliant at playing the 80s housewife with her 'choppy changey' hair and 'notions' as the Irish put it. Bernard O'Shea is equally great at playing Eamon as someone who clearly regrets his married life. The supporting cast, particularly the man who plays the priest Father Gabriel is just brilliant.

This show is far less "obvious" in terms of broad comedy compared to the best known of Irish sitcoms - Mrs Brown's Boys. I don't know how to describe it best - its not as broad as that, and less surreal than Father Ted.

I suppose mix those two sitcoms and add a bit of Kath & Kim and its nearly there!

Hilariously funny. The best Irish comedy since father Ted. Bridget in particular is amazing. "Eamon Eamon Eamon". She's such a head do-er. Very Irish comedy. Love it.

Wish they would make more or this cast would come up with something new
etann-3670725 May 2022
One of my top favorites, watched it through a few times, I still catch something I didn't notice the first time around. There is so much detail in this show from the wardrobe to the sets and each character is perfectly played, I don't always get the references, sometimes I'll look things up to get the joke and even if I still don't get it, it's still interesting to find out what another culture finds amusing.

I'd like to see them shoot for some sort of finale season or maybe an entry into the 90's version of the show. Wish it was better known, as there is so much lousy programming that this could easily take the place of.

Wonderful family Show
fran-411-751949 June 2022
So worth watching this lovely family endure life. Bridget's choppy changie hairdo, and Eamons reactions. There 6 to 9 kids are adorable and are always changing. The local parish Priest is a delight!

This show is hilarious. Completely ridiculous. I have re-wanted it several times. They have to make more! I'm not sure why anyone would give this a one star.
