The boys hit another bump in the road.....
ajs199727 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
As Sam is still getting over everything that Lucifer told him in the cage, Dean stumbles on a case where an older man was in his locked room with his brains bashed in. While this is happening, the Winchesters are getting worried about the fact that "Cas" has not been around for a while and hasn't been in contact.

This episode continues the amazing story telling that this season has been doing as of late. We dig dipper into Dean's mind as he deals with the fact that he may or may not have feelings for The Darkness just like she said she would. Sam must also deal with the fact that Lucifer was right when he said that Sam should have been looking for Dean when he was in Purgatory.

Misha gives us more of Casifer and it is getting better and better. Misha has shown us that he is one of the most talented actors that are on T.V. right now. The way that he seems like Mark with every little thing that he does is pretty amazing.

Overall, this episode keeps the momentum going strong as the season continues full force.

A nice throw back to the case of the week that happened in the earlier seasons
CubsandCulture14 October 2020
As the series has moved on Supernatural has had to devote more and more episodes to the ongoing mythos arch of each season. I wish the later season would have tried to cut back on this some. While this episode has a light touch of that it is one of the few pure monster of the week episodes this season. The Banshee is one of the better creatures the show has done in recent years-the screaming sound is unnerving and the whole concept they used is disturbing. But best of all like you got in season 1-3 the side characters in this episode are quite fun. Eileen of course was so compelling they brought her back a few times but Mildred is a really lovely guest character. Why yes she does remind me of a Golden Girl.

Yes, Ireland in 1980
mraajdar1 March 2023
To counter another review here - it's a nonsense that a record player would have been out of place in 1980's Ireland. You don't get much view of the body of thing, but you get a nice close-up of the turntable and arm/needle, it actually looks like a pretty contemporary model for the time. I can't speak for the US or Canada but they were still very commonplace in Ireland and Britain, especially for the working class who did not have money to waste on brand new tech. We were raised to make do and mend - to repair, reuse - to not throw things away until they were beyond saving. I *still* have my 1986 record player working and in use fwiw. Besides which, the song being played is from the 60s, so even if they could afford / were inclined to get a new player it would be silly to get rid of all their old records and the means to play them, then re-buy them all in new format, that's beyond wasteful and just pointless. The idea that "everyone would have a tape deck" and LPs belong in the 1880s comes across as a very foreign, somewhat ignorant thing to be worked up about the episode for. Do not judge the episode based on a factually incorrect criticism of the opening sequence.

That aside, the episode itself is pretty good. One of the best monster of the weeks in a while. I've missed the older episodes that were much more based in mythology and folklore. It's a bonus that's it's pretty local folklore for me haha. The casting is disability inclusive without it feeling too token (a main guest character is deaf thanks to the banshee scream; her actress is also deaf), the writing is focused, the soundtrack fits. The CGI banshee is a bit silly looking but tbh that's my only criticism. Good solid standalone episode.

Girl power! Way to go!
supermaggie5 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this episode. A new and exciting monster (even if maybe a bit stolen from Teen Wolf), Sam and Dean in new/unfamiliar settings (a home for the elderly) and a lot of girl power - Eileen and Mildred rock!! Since Charlie (and before Ellen and Jo) very sadly had to go, it is always a joy to see some female support! More Jodie (episode 12 is therefore also enjoyable, but number 10 was even better), Donna, Eileen etc.! The main part are for sure the brothers (and their "sidekicks" Castiel and Crowley), but some female support spices everything up - more of that please. And furthermore, episodes like this prove those wrong who postulate that all female characters in Supernatural are evil- fortunately there are enough extremely positive characters as proof for the opposite!!

Ireland in the 1980s not the 1880s.

Warning: Spoilers
Good episode but why does Supernatural always treat Ireland like it's 100 years behind. Opening scene supposed to take place in the late 80s. The Irish couple would have had a tape deck same as the US!! I mean the series is made in Canada there are loads of us over there. Just ask one how it's supposed to look. While we are on the subject. Every now and then they do an incantation in "Gaelic". I really wish they would check on the pronunciation. It's not a dead language there are people you can check with. Samhain is pronounced Sau-win. Not Sam-haine for Christ sake.

major themes wrapped around a sideline story
jackiehedstrom17 January 2023
I really liked this episode - I am noticing how the Badham/Thompson episodes are always of a better quality than average. Also some really good acting here with Misha Collins as Lucifer and Jensen Ackles really doing an excellent job giving a subtle but perfect Dean involuntarily in love with Amara.

Thompson always writes the episodes in such a way that Sam and Dean become more human, more real. The scenes at the end, going to bed, Dean's inner turmoil, the music to that - there is a value to scenes like that, which build the carachter-viewer connection.

And there are a few funny moments in this one too. The whole Banchee story seems irrelevant to the big picture, and I certainly am not amongst those that are happy Eileen got added to the show regulars. If you are going to have a deaf carchter (usually to be PC), can't you find a beautiful,or at least charming deaf actress? Especially since this was developed into Sam's love interest, and later we are informed that Eileen is "hot". Sure, hot like Meryl Streep...

Retirement homes and lovesick Dean
shwetafabm4 July 2020
I liked Lucifer Cass and i am excited about him even though his reason for being is the most ridiculous thing this show has done. The story was fine but too much melodrama Sweet old lady knows someone is in love... Just cliche
